I'll be the first to admit that I don't know anything about sinkholes. But I watched a video last night on youtube about a Louisiana sinkhole that happened in 1980 that drained an entire lake and was a huge incident. It happened because of a 14" drilling bit on a rig in the middle of the lake. Somehow, the triangulation measurements were off and the bit pierced the top of a salt dome mine and the whole cavern sucked in the entirety of the lake and surrounding area.

Your pictures show what appears to be an industrial/drilling area. If this is what happened again, perhaps the bit penetrated a salt dome/mine again and that's what has caused this recent sinkhole. I know they're saying the salt dome roof has collapsed, but it could have been because of something that happened at the surface.
