The command channel has been tuned off and the puppets have been left hanging out to dry.

They have outlived their usefulness and are now left with no protection. You can pick them off if you like. It won't make much difference in the end since they'll eventually share exactly the same fate as everybody else, but doing it may still bring some peace to vengeful minds. That alone makes it worth it.

More importantly, what this sudden change implies is that switching to the new tactics has finally been completed. It may not be visible yet, but there must be some mighty big wall of shit, just over the horizon, not-so-slowly rolling on its way here.
