BATON ROUGE, LA (FOX44) — The head of the state Senate's Natural Resources Committee is planning a pair of meetings about the Bayou Corne sinkhole.

Senator Gerald Long tells FOX44 News he'll host one meeting in Baton Rouge, and another in Assumption Parish. The first will be a Senate hearing on February 19 at the State Capitol, because that's the best date for members of the Natural Resources Committee.

Long has not yet set a date for the Assumption Parish meeting. He said Governor Jindal is invited, but he doesn't think he will attend.

TO ADDRESS NAPOLEONVILLE DOME SINK HOLE ISSUES
State lawmakers serving on key Senate and House natural resource and
environmental quality committees will meet jointly to discuss the Napoleonville Dome sink
hole near Bayou Corne and its impact on the surrounding communities and residents. The
joint meeting of the Senate Natural Resources and Environmental Quality committees and
the House Committee on Natural Resources and Environment will begin at 10:00 a.m.
Tuesday, February 19th in the Hainkel Room at the State Capitol.
As Senator Gerald Long, chairman of the Senate Committee on Natural Resources
explained, "We want to hear from everyone involved including state officials, local
officials, officials with Texas Brine, the company believed to be involved in the collapse,
and citizens impacted by this on-going emergency. We want everything on the table as to
the status of the response so far and where we go from here."
The sinkhole was discovered in early August, prompting the evacuation of 150 area
residences in the Bayou Corne and Grand Bayou areas. The evacuation continues today.

This is happening at Lake Peigneur...the same lake that several years ago had a sinkhole develop in a salt mine shaft and the whole lake drained into the hole. Sucked down an oil rig, some buildings...
