A new study from Zheijian Provincial People's Hospital in Zheijiang, China indicates that a compound in turmeric known as curcumin, which gives the spice its characteristic saffron-like color, is capable of inducing programmed cell death (apoptosis) within triple negative breast cancer cells.

What Is the Difference Between Curcumin & Turmeric?

Curcumin is a naturally occurring chemical compound that is found in the spice turmeric. The two words are sometimes used interchangeably, but the technical difference between the two is that turmeric is the yellowish powder used to flavor foods, while curcumin is a chemical contained within turmeric. In Indian and Asian cultures, turmeric and curcumin have a long history of use as a traditional herbal medicine, and Western medicine is beginning to study the potential of turmeric in treating diseases such as cancer and diabetes. As with any health supplement, consult your doctor before taking turmeric or curcumin supplements.

so by your argument there shouldn't be any breast cancer in the women of India, given that their diet is high in Turmic use which is the host of the curcumin?

I would love to see the stats

Thanks for your comment.. The same question has cross my mind also..
Here's one article, I'll search for more..Thanks again...hf

While the in vitro and in vivo evidence of curcumin's anti-cancer activities is remarkable, there have been no population studies that specifically address the association between turmeric consumption and the risk of breast cancer (or other cancers). India, where turmeric is a dietary staple, has lower overall cancer rates and breast cancer rates than countries in the West (although the rates are rising, particularly in urban areas). One 2005 study found that south Asian women (having origins mainly in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka) living in California were 3.5 times more likely to develop breast cancer than native Asian Indian females. However, these results likely are the result of a variety of non-dietary as well as various dietary factors.

It's not quite as easy as that.

The amount of bio-available active curcumin that actually crosses over from gut to blood is very low in turmeric.

The active ingredient is indeed curcumin, and even that pure curcumin is not as bioavailable for humans as the meriva or BCM-95 Bio-curcumin derivates.

But still, rural india has breast cancer incidence of c. 8/100 000 women.

In US that is c. 74. So a factor of 9x difference.

That's big.
