Syrian government agrees to Eid ceasefire
The UN envoy says Assad accepts ceasefire over four-day holiday, as fighting continues to rage across the country.

UN peacekeeping chief Herve Ladsous spoke on Monday of tentative plans top assemble a peacekeeping force if a ceasefire takes hold.

Syrian government agrees to Eid holiday ceasefire – Brahimi

The Syrian government has agreed to a ceasefire during the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid starting this week, Lakhdar Brahimi, UN peace envoy to Syria said in Cairo on Wednesday. Speaking after a meeting with Arab League chief Nabil al-Arabi, Brahimi said some rebel groups he contacted had also agreed to a truce during Eid al-Adha. The Syrian government is expected to announce its decision by Thursday, Brahimi said.

(CNN) -- After 19 months of incessant violence, the Syrian government has agreed to a cease-fire during the four-day Eid al-Adha holiday, which begins Friday, special envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said.
He added that some rebels also "agreed to the principle" of a cease-fire.
But whether the words lead to any kind of peace remains uncertain.
The U.N.-Arab League special envoy to Syria spoke from Cairo after a recent trip to Damascus.
But Syrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Jihad Makdissi said that from his perspective, nothing was set in stone.

"The issue of halt(ing) the military operations during the Eid al-Adha holiday is still under study by the general command of the military and the armed forces," Makdissi told CNN Wednesday. "A final decision will be issued tomorrow in this regard.
