This will strengthen Sandy by creating a so called poleward outflow channel.

It sucks the upper-level air out of Sandy which "ventilates" it.

Actually, there is a little known effect that has to do with the Coriolis force when a hurricane tracks exactly due north.

It causes the hurricane to intensify even in the face of strong shear. Basically, nothing can stop it.

Seen it before myself.

IMHO this could easily make it to Cat 3 before the extra-tropical transition begins in the north Bahamas.

Cat3? It looks quite weakened coming out of Cuba right now...

So this could get much worse...

HURRICANE SANDY PROMOTES EARTHQUAKES IN COSTA RICA AND THE CAYMAN ISLANDS

EARTHQUAKE SUMMARY FOR OCTOBER 24, 2012


A new hurricane - Sandy - formed over Central America over the past two days is moving north over the Caribbean Sea. Low pressures from such meteorological events, when they center over the land mass can relieve atmospheric loading on the land allowing it to rise with respect to the underlying subduction zone. This, in turn reduces friction along the subduction zone faults allowing larger earthquakes to occur. This appears to have been the case yesterday when an M 6.6 in Costa Rica occurred as the low pressure system associated with Hurricane Sandy was located over the area. Sandy has now moved northward and is currently east of the Cayman Islands and near Cuba. The strongest earthquake reported since our last summary occurred today in the Cayman Islands as Hurricane Sandy was passing to the east. While not reported felt in the area, this earthquake of M 5.4 in the Cayman Islands is the strongest located in that area since an M 5.8 occurred on January 19, 2010, a week after the M 7.0 in Haiti which killed hundreds of thousands and the second strongest in the area in the past five years. The last strong earthquake in the area occurred as an M 6.2 on February 4, 2007. The strongest in the past 22 years occurred 12 days before the great Sumatra earthquake and tsunami of December, 2004 on December 14, 2004 with M 6.8.

Seismicity in the northern Caribbean could be promoted as Sandy moves through the area with the possibility of a moderate event along the Puerto Rico trench if Sandy lingers in the area or takes a sharp turn to the east. Hurricane Sandy is now expected to move direct north along the eastern U.S. Seaboard and to make landfall in the northeastern U.S. around October 29-30 as a major storm. Seismicity along the eastern U.S. is likely to see increased activity over the next week as Sandy is offshore.

More than 240 aftershocks have been recorded in Costa Rica of M 2.0-4.0 in the day after the M 6.6 in that region this morning. There were no major damages or casualties associated with that quake. The largest was M 4.5. This activity had been expected in forecast 69438 to occur about 100 km from the epicenters around October 27.

The potential exists for the unusually moist air from Sandy to collide with this cold air from Canada and unleash the heaviest October rains ever recorded in the Northeast.

Great, we were hammered last year with the freak snowstorm in Oct. no power for a week, tress down all over the place, had to take my daughter to the ER to get nebulized, fun stuff.

Hope it goes out to sea, but looks like we could get a bit of nasty weather in Ct. .
