Hurricane survival tips and prep info!!!

North Eastern NJ here,,,,you can't find a generator in New Jersey...they are sold out. Also water is disappearing off store shelves and gas stations already mobbed. We are preparing.

And all your dishes, too! It is also smart to do some last minute housecleaning - no vaccume or extra hot water for cleaning up for a few days if the power goes out.

Oh, and take a shower!

Battery operated radio is a must! Cable and Satellite are usually the first to go.

AM Talk radio will most likely go live with all weather info.

WOW...At least people are getting ready and taking this seriously.

I see everyone is putting some great input! I know it was said, but make sure you have extra items for your pets!

Dry pet food (at least 5 days worth for each pet, but for what they're projecting with this storm [Sandy], use your own discretion)

Canned pet food (if they eat that, and to cut the dry food to make it last longer)

Pet medications (If you're like us and have pets with health concerns, call your vet ASAP to get refills if they need it!)

Pet blankets/bedding (they will be scared and need their cozy place beside you)

Toys and Treats (just like children, they will get antsy if kept inside too long and need to be kept busy)

Clean, dry towels

Paper towels (in case they get wet, or if they have accidents in the house)

Plastic bags (to put said accidents in)

Have stationary crates or travel crates at the ready (in case you need to bug out, you need to take them with you! I cannot stress this enough -- they need a safe, and readily available form of safe transportation in case SHTF and you need to leave)

NJ here, too. We are in Burl Co. Have family in Husdon Co; where abouts are you?

I have found that having a 55 and 35 gallon barrels of water stored in the basement works great and old 4-gallon water jugs work best for flushing the toilet plus they are easy to fill when it rains just use a large funnel.

Wool blankets and they are warm even when wet if the power is out place old remnant carpet between your mattress and box spring for insulation on cold nights and propane heater does wonders heating up a room quickly.

This is going to be a very serious storm. Here in northwest Jersey we still have roads that haven't been fixed from Irene last year. People remember the damage that did, so I think they are taking Sandy seriously, especially since the winds are expected to be much higher than Irene, and they're saying the winds and rain could last for 36 hours! I don't even wanna think about how much rain that will be, but I'm sure all our farms will be decimated again.

Same here in Vermont - still trying to fix some of the damage from Irene. I really am worried about this...

Have a supply of paper products: paper plates, towels, toilet paper. Also some plastic utensils.

If you cannot use a generator, in an apartment of not able to handle one physically,get a power inverter.

They come in many different sizes up to 10 or 12 thousand
watts and you can use your car batteryto run them. Leave enough power on the battery to crank your car and recharge the battery. Best to hve 2 car batteries. Easy way to move them is on a towel or sheet and drag them.

kerosene heaters are great for emergencies.
maybe plan on up to (2) gallons of fuel use per day.

if you have electricity but your furnace is not working, open the oven door and set oven to broil to heat a house, keep flammables away from oven door

block off hallways with hanging blankets.
keep curtains closed.
close register vents.
cover furnace return duct on ceiling.

get a tea kettle for hot water, you can set it on the kero heater too!

A poster on another thread reminded folks about solar lights...they can be recharged during the day....and provide light. ALSO...mini blinds. I not only take down everything outside that might fly through the windows...I keep the blinds closed. It can keep some of the glass out if the windows break and it keeps the heat in.

Guy, matches and bleach. If this thing gets crazy, you will just be lucky to boil and somewhat disinfect water.

Likely, this will just be 3 - 5 days of power disruption and some hardship and people will act like they are dying of starvation and thirst.

Tell it to the people in Sudan, I'm sure they will cry for you going without your fatty feasts for a week.

Maybe we get lucky and the entire east coast takes off 10 lbs. Could really work in our favor.

People with pets have to think about having 5 days worth of pet food??

I keep like 2 or 3 bags (over a month's worth) on hand at all times. Mainly because I'm lazy.

This storm may bring some cold weather with it. Here's a few good tips on how to stay warm....



When trying to stay warm, it's a good idea to consolidate your bodies in one room. The heat from your bodies alone will raise the temperature in the room a notch or two. But you need to properly close off and seal those unused rooms.

Make sure any heating vents are sealed shut in those rooms. If you have magnetic register covers, great. If not, use something nonflammable and tape it over the vent.

Also make sure the windows in that room are properly sealed as described above. Just because you're not in that room, doesn't mean it won't help. Everything counts. And seal the door as described above, also. Remember... another barrier between you and the frigid cold outside is a good thing.

Warnings & Other Things to Consider

Stay in smaller rooms. The smaller the room, the less the heat will dissipate.
Try to stay in one room. The more you leave the room, the more warm air escapes. Choose a room next to the bathroom and make a insulated tunnel to and from for easy bathroom trips.
When dealing with any kind of heating (gas, propane, kerosene, wood), make sure to have proper ventilation. These do use of oxygen, so not only do you have things like carbon monoxide to worry about, you have lack of oxygen to be concerned with— aka— hypoxia.
Let as much sun into your home as possible!

I meant EXTRA, EMERGENCY food... I ALWAYS have at least two weeks of eating food on hand for ALL my babies.. smartass.

Lots of baby wipes except the adult sized ones.

And those little solar powered lights you stick in the ground outside can be carried inside. Charge them all day and use them inside at night. Better than nothing.

Have some kind of rain gear where you can get to it easily such as in your car. Yellow slicker is good.

Damnit, forgot to log in. Meant to type *OVER at least two weeks of eating food per animal, or more, at any given time, not to mention the 50 lbs we keep prepped in case of disaster or when SHTF.

Some people should really just keep their asinine comments to themselves.
