The talking heads in Washington preach and preach how we have to make sure every vote is counted and use BS arguments such as having to show an ID to vote is wrong.

But when it comes to real issues that really affect millions of voters they turn their backs and walk away.

Article: The project, which tracks military votes, found in 2010 that only 4.5 percent of the 2 million military and overseas voters reported to the Election Assistance Commission were able to cast absentee ballots that were actually counted. Meanwhile, the overall national voter participation rate for the 2010 election was 41.6 percent.

Eversole said the problem exists because state election officials have difficulty keeping track of military voters because they are frequently deployed or move from base to base. That means that ballots are often sent to the wrong addresses, lost in the mail, or arrive at state election offices too late to be counted.

The problem is worse in presidential elections years when more people vote.

This is about a lot more than just the presidential vote.

These are votes not counted that are cast by people who are overseas and get no say in there community’s on things like tax levy’s, mayoral races and judicial races. Places were this drastically affects what would have happened in local elections.

And of course congresses 2009 “fix” has only made the issue worse.

2012 pre election goverment update on the issue.

absentee ballot data for 2012 paints a bleak picture for military voters. While the MOVE Act should have
increased opportunities for military members to register and request an absentee ballot, the 2012 pre-election
data shows a remarkable decrease in such requests from military voters, especially when that data is compared to
data from 2008.

Take, for example, the low number of absentee ballots that have been requested thus far in Virginia, North Carolina,
and Ohio. Of the 126,251 active duty military members and spouses in Virginia, only 1,746 have requested
absentee ballots for the November election. Similarly, in North Carolina and Ohio, less than 2,000 absentee
military ballots have been requested by military members and their spouses in those states. Overall, in these
three states, less than 2 percent of eligible military voters (5,411 out of 288,961) have requested absentee ballots.

Data from other states, while not as extreme, still raises significant concerns. fact is that an incredibly small
percentage of military voters are requesting absentee ballots for the 2012 election, even though a majority of
military members (roughly, two-thirds) will need to vote by absentee ballot.

Florida—the state with the highest percentage of absentee ballot requests so far—has received absentee ballot
requests from 16% percent of military voters eligible to vote in that state. Other states like Alaska, Colorado,
and Illinois have absentee ballot request rates in the 5 to 7 percent range. !e chart below contains absentee
ballot data from 9 states with significant military populations.

So far for the current election “2012” we have RECORD low absentee ballot requests a drop of over 70% compared to the 2008 election.

Snip: The drop in military voter ballot requests happened despite the Military and Overseas Voter Empowerment Act (or MOVE Act), which Congress passed in 2009 following the 2008 election’s low military voter turnout. The law created a program called the Federal Voting Assistance Program, tasked with creating voting assistance services for active duty military members serving at overseas military installations.

But the FVAP hasn’t set up a single military voter assistance office at a number of military installations overseas according to findings in an August DOD Inspector General report. Part of the problem is a bureaucratic tangle of funding hurdles, but US News and World Report published an article this month reporting that part of the problem is resistance from the Department of Defense itself.

The Pentagon’s failure to implement the 2009 act of Congress will likely leave thousands of military voters disenfranchised in the 2012 election. Some Republicans are charging the Obama Administration with active voter suppression of military voters, who tend to lean Republican. Strong turnout among military voters overseas could make all the difference in swing states where the poll numbers are close. Over the weekend, The Hill reported:

Look at those numbers above, 2008 North Carolina 19,109 absentee ballots requested, this year 78. Alaska 2008 13,766 absentee ballots requested, this year 65. Virginia 41,763 absentee ballots requested this year 12,292. Ohio 2008 32,334 absentee ballots requested, this year 9707.

They know their votes are thrown away!

At the same time Ohio this year forcefully mailed out an absentee application to every single voter in Ohio without request, over 8 million of them at taxpayer expense. But the military absentee ballots were not part of those 8 million forcibly mailed to registered voters!

My wife and my absentee application never showed up, where did it go! Neither did ANY of my neighbors absentee applications ever show, I’m waiting to find out I already voted on Election Day!

Thx for the pin mods.

People believe their early votes and absentee votes are going to be counted, but this is one crazy lie of an election year so far. The earlier you voted the more likely your vote will be lost.

Not looking at the bigger picture, this is not just about military votes; remember not all the overseas absentee votes were military. Also it is more about local issues then even the presidential election.

If all you really care about is dem votes, you should be very worried. One tiny mistake on an absentee ballot and the vote is null, with 8 million absentee balots going to every single registered voter in Ohio alone this year how many inner city folks will make a tiny mistake, more then quite a few.

The reality is Dem/repub does not matter! Everyone should be upset.

Again look at Ohio and ask yourself from both sides out of the 8 million absentee ballots mailed out how many will be throw away of those returned?

The answer is over 40% they openly admit to throwing away about 20% but they leave out the fact another 20% were not deliverd correctly due to election officials errors or postal errors such as they were sent to the wrong polling stations or delivered late and discounted, those are not counted at all even as disqualified votes. But they push early voting and because of that we will have record numbers of votes tossed out this year from both side. Millions all over the country will think they voted but will not have.

Snip;Statewide more than 1.7 million absentee ballots were cast in 2008, about 30 percent of Ohio's 5.8 million votes.

Snip; Streamlined provisional voting procedures from Husted's office and a recent federal court ruling could reduce the percentage of provisional votes disqualified -- about 20 percent in November 2008, when nearly 40,000 out of 207,000 cast in Ohio were tossed out.

Snip;In 2010, 77,005, or 7.2 percent, of 1.1 million absentee ballots requested in Ohio were not returned. No Ohio county exceeded 15 percent, a threshold that triggers extra scrutiny under an electoral procedures agreement between the state and the League of Women Voters.

Snip;In that same 2010 election, 1,255 Hamilton County residents had their absentee ballots thrown out because they failed to seal an inner envelope, a violation of Ohio election law.

Again they tell you they do not want a single vote by anyone to not count!
Then they do this. Breaking the trust of an election system that is already not trusted.

Realize not a single overseas military vote counted in Ohio in 2008 even in local issues.

On July 17th, the Obama for America Campaign, the Democratic National Committee, and the Ohio Democratic Party filed suit in OH to strike down part of that state's law governing voting by members of the military. Their suit said that part of the law is "arbitrary" with "no discernible rational basis."

Currently, Ohio allows the public to vote early in-person up until the Friday before the election. Members of the military are given three extra days to do so. While the Democrats may see this as "arbitrary" and having "no discernible rational basis," I think it is entirely reasonable given the demands on servicemen and women's time and their obligations to their sworn duty.

The National Defense Committee reports: each of the last three years, the Department of Defense’s Federal Voting Assistance Program has reported to the President and the Congress that the number one reason for military voter disenfranchisement is inadequate time to successfully vote.

I like these guys below.

Count US In is a non-profit, non-partisan 501(3c) organization formed by a 3 former military men who found it unacceptable that military voters were disenfranchised in previous elections. Since 2005, Count US In has created alliances with the Department of Defense, League of Women Voters and veterans associations to spread our message.

My question is simply this –

HOW LONG ARE YOU GOING TO PUT UP WITH THIS CRAP?
Soldiers – Are you going to allow politicians to deny your right to vote – then try not to count your votes when you manage to get a ballot in?

Families and Friends – Are you going to allow politicians to walk all over the rights of your sons, daughters, spouses, buddies?

Veterans – Are you going to allow politicians to mistreat another generation of your brothers and sisters in arms?

Citizens – Are you going to allow politicians to spend trillions on welfare and utopian social engineering, yet cut services for the men and women who defend your very lives, and liberties?

Perhaps. Maybe it's a good thing given the stupidity and ignorance that people forced to join the military exhibit usually throughout their lives.
They made themselves dispoable by giving those that use them like so much toilet paper power over them

I hope the first loser that DHS rounds up and sodomizes before killing him is YOU, you dog faced bastard. Our armed forced are and have been what keeps enemies like the Chinese and Ruskies from just walking in the door and taking over the land that they already own. It is no fault of the military men and women of this country when the drugged up, asshole civilians elect loser sellout after loser sellout into elected positions of government start never ending wars, granted, in their defense, that it the only choices today.

You should really apologise to these people as your comments are simply uncalled for. And stop smoking crack, it will put you in an early grave, no wait a second, keep it up, you deserve exactly THAT!

I joined the military of my own free will and would easily prove my IQ by whatever test you think would work.

I didn't join to be disposable, I joined to help fix things with what I know. I made a few improvements and you can sleep a little better at night because of them.

It's called doing what you are capable of. It doesn't make you a slave, but simply useful with an income stream because of it.

You know, back in the old days while I was standing guard as those I cared about slept peacefully, I was filled with a great sense of satisfaction that I watched while they rested, they deserved it. Protecting them was my honor. Occasionally, people, usually civilians during parades, made me wonder WHY I cared at all. But by and large, the VAST majority of people I encountered were thankful for our service and THAT is what sustained me, and us.

They fight for our rights but we deny them theirs.

Snip; Ten states - AK, CO, DE, HI, MA, MD, NY, RI, WA, and WI - as well as the District of Columbia and the Virgin Islands have asked the Department of Defense for a waiver exempting them from the law requiring ballots be sent out 45 days before an election day.

Snip; This is not a new, unknown, or unpredicted vote counting situation. It's time for American politicians of both parties to put their integrity where their talk is regarding the value and honor they hold for our military citizens. Every accommodation and effort including military absentee ballot requirement law revision and assurance that hand-counting of military ballots are included in the vote counts must be the only acceptable resolution. Real world considerations must be made to uphold the integrity of the voting process so that indeed "all votes are counted" - including those of our military.

And then there is this:

Absentee ballots may have been destroyed in crash

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — Federal officials say that absentee ballots being sent to U.S. military serving in Afghanistan may have been burned in a plane crash.

A top official in the Federal Voting Assistance Program this week notified election officials across the nation that a transport plane crashed at Shindad Air Base on Oct. 19.

The crash resulted in the destruction of 4,700 pounds of mail inbound to troops serving in the area.

Federal officials in their email to state election offices said they did not know if any ballots were destroyed. They also said the lost mail was limited to one zip code.

But they recommended that election officials resend a new ballot to anyone who requested one since the first ballot may have been destroyed in the crash and fire.
