In my mind the events monitored ( ETS ) are directly related to most if not all coming seismicity in the region. High tide and a full moon tonight will produce what?..... i'm not betting either way. I'm more of a wait and see, then approach the answer with a better understanding of future events kind of person.

The ETS events have been studied for less than a decade, you are correct in your observation that we really have no written history for what happened in the past or what may occur shortly. Geologic records tell us what has happened, what to expect, but not exactly when it is ever going to happen again.

Always be ready. The earth changes daily somewhere.

The more we all see what we see, and converse about what we see and feel, the better a bigger picture we all have. I'm all for saving lives and hope that this event does not lead to a Cascadia Event, but if it does...

these quakes are magma movement, not tectonic quakes

i use to live there...beautiful island, strange things their, like the time a sound like a repeat hum from the ocean went on for a month and during that time fish washed ashore ripped apart.
They say the plates are not grinding like before and that one is dropping under the other while the other is going up and they don't know what will happen because it never done this before.... this was on the BC morning news today while i was watching

Yes.

It wasn't typical, we all know it, the researchers know it, the graphs show it.... and what is there to say about it?. The last link above by me, pretty much confirms my standpoint to the whole situation. John Vidale is being ignored about what he wrote just this year. He clearly lays out how the Japanese could have seen what we are seeing now, and they are better prepared with instruments and even they missed it.

John has his fingers on the pulse for knowing what is coming ( 90m shift to the west from the 40k subduction zone running the length of the PNW ) and we are witnessing ( in my opinion ) exactly what we should be catching right now.....

There should be people on this right now, just because its sunday doesn't mean shit to an earthquake that is coming. We have all the signs, now how many hours do we have?...

I can't see it any other way right now, within 24 hours I think we will know whether we have a a major situation that will continue for years like Japan or we will just notch another earthquake in the books as a wow factor.

A bit more to think about

Both the Queen Charlotte & San Andreas Faults seem to generate ~M7+ events roughly every 50 years

The CSZ has ~M9+ events roughly 300-800 years - The last one being a M9.0 in 1700

So we have to ask how many transform fault boundary triggers can get pulled every 50 years before the CSZ explodes? That is the unknown. There is also the recently discovered Episodic Tremor & Slip (ETS) that alleviates pressure on the CSZ

The reason why it's so ominous NOW though is apparent when you watch this video. Keep in mind the graphic shows a clockwise chronology of the BIG ONES (Chile>>>New Zealand>>>Tohuku>>>GUESS WHERE'S NEXT?)

Guess when the next full moon is? TOMORROW! MONDAY OCTOBER 29

According to my charts, the full moon is Tuesday the 30th, 2012. Today the moon is at 88% with 95% Monday. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Jim Berkland used to be a USGS geologist, decades ago when I followed him, he had a website called Syzygy??."..he's the guy who really opened my mi d to a lot of things. I believe he was on Art Bell a few times as well.

Jim is a good guy, got fired for trying to help people.

thats nearly every quake, surely more than 90%

Most of the aftershocks from the 7.7 earthquake on Saturday are about 10 km deep. The 7.7 was 17.5 km deep. Just saying.

i would be aware for the next 2 days ... it COULD be the trigger for the 9.X M one like in japan last year

The Cascadia Subduction Zone was discovered in the late 1980s (IOW, after the Mount St. Helen`s eruption in the Cascadias in 1980). The Episodic Tremor and Slip within the CSZ was discovered in 2000. So this is all new territory in the understanding of west coast earthquakes since the last large earthquake in the Queen Charlotte Islands (now Haida Gwaii) in 1949. We discussed this here yesterday.

Who am I to tell a geologist anything, but the usual argument that earthquakes on one fault line don`t affect earthquakes on another, connected fault line, seems weak. Scientists can`t possibly know how an earthquake in Haida Gwaii will affect the CSZ, because there is no historical data. I wanted to make that clear. The respected scientist is speculating, much like us here at GLP. Call it gilding the lily if you like. I`d use call it blowing smoke out his ear.
