Why don't homeless people simply go to jail and at least get looked after?

The other inmates they will be put in with are gangsters and murderers. Even if they committed a crime like running out on their bill at a restaurant. That might be why.

There is a fictional story they told us at school of a homeless guy who went to jail on purpose every winter. The story was set in the US.

Japan, brazil, and the United States are all different countries. Authority runs the prisons in your country. The worthless inmate gangbanger trash run our prisons, and it's not an option for those who are weak or not capable of violence, and can't handle a fight, to be locked up with those inmates.

I guarantee it was not in California, Illinois, or New York. The worst inmates are in those states and the other states are more likely to have the same types.

If you were on the streets, getting raped, mugged, hungry, wouldn't you consider it?

It's not fictional in the UK. In the 19th century it was common for tramps to smash a shop window, or some other minor crime so that they could get 6 months in jail during the winter and come out in the spring.

The fastest growing segment of homeless, at least in the US, is families with children. US jails don't come with family cells.

Given the choice, (i have been homeless before) I would rather starve then get locked up.

It's not fictional in 20th c. US. One of the locals in my town used to do it every year. For 15 years, at least. Glue sniffer. Dead now.

I was homeless when I was a teen, I chose to do some armed robberies, my plan was make enough money not to be homeless or if I get caught I will at least have a roof and 3 meals a day.

So yes it is a choice that has been made by many already, do or die so to speak.

Well there is a real-life story, where criminals actually already do this, so evidently the folk-lore from your random Uncle is new.

This will stop when criminals are routinely shot dead at the scene.
