Anonymous Coward User ID: 23649620 Portugal 10/31/2012 08:59 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Yeah we've had several cases this year in azores or madeira, can't remember correctly which are some portuguese island that are a little bit south of Portugal in the Atlantic, nothing that can't be cured, but strange nonetheless that those mosquitoes appeared there this year... think it never happened before. But it's nothing to worry about, unless its type 3 dengue fever, then its almost certain that everyone that gets that will probably die from heavy internal hemorrage |

They gave me antibiotics, fever medicine, dizzy medicine and pain killers. The doctor told me worst case I would get some bad rash and maybe spit up some blood. I didn't have it that bad though. I didn't get the rash and I didn't spit up any blood. so no problem haha. |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 25836354 Brazil 10/31/2012 10:00 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | How's the temperature in Florida right now ? As a brazilian I can tell that most of dengue fever cases happen in hotter seasons because that's the perfect weather for the female to lay the eggs and for them to hatch. Actually dengue fever is only transmitted by female species of Aedis Aegypts |

Like flu on steroids. As the above poster said, fluids & painkillers for 2 weeks. Residual cough lasted 2 months. Ugh!! I just figured it wouldn't be too long before it got up here. We have had a bad year with the mosquitoes. Had a very hot and rainy summer. The weather has cooled down with lows in the 40s last couple of nights but the damn mosquitoes are still around. Will take a freeze to kill them. I am worried about catching it esp since some of you said you got it in Bahamas. Going on a cruise next week. Good grief something I didn't think about lol I am allergic to stupidity so I break out in sarcasm When they said there was no Lyme in Florida they lied! |

You DO NOT want to catch this if at all possible. Fate whispers to the warrior "You cannot withstand the storm" the warrior whispers back "I am the storm" INTJ-A |

Sad thing is we take the dogs out and they would have mosquitoes hovering all around them. I already have lyme so I guess your right I don't want to catch this either. Hubby and I joked cause the mosquitoes were so bad this year if we didn't catch West Nile or Dengue FEver in our own back yard we weren't gonna get it lol. We have a weird sense of humor I guess. |

Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23649620 But it's nothing to worry about, unless its type 3 dengue fever, then its almost certain that everyone that gets that will probably die from heavy internal hemorrage Dead wrong. Dengue is a HORRIBLE sickness that lasts for weeks and then lingers for a long while after that. Dengue's nick-name is "breakbone fever", because the muscle and joint pains are so severe that it feels like you have broken bones all over your body. It is a classic jungle fever. Ask anyone who suffered from it (and lived) if it was 'nothing to worry about'. |
THE INQUISADOR (OP) User ID: 1375283 United States 10/31/2012 04:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | UPDATE: Health officials in Orange and Seminole counties are issuing a warning after a 19-year-old University of Central Florida student contracted dengue fever, a potentially deadly mosquito-borne disease. Mosquito Control will be out Wednesday doing surveillance, setting traps and going door-to-door to find the source of the disease. The student had not been on vacation or had traveled out of the area, so health officials determined he contracted dengue fever in Central Florida. Symptoms include high temperature, body aches and a rash. Health officials say the student is recovering and will survive. Dengue fever is extremely rare in Florida, with most cases reported near the Keys. It has been several decades since a dengue case turned up in Central Florida. The best way to keep from getting the disease is to empty any standing water around your home. Also, wear mosquito repellent, especially if you're going to be outside around dusk when the mosquitos are most active.
