I have a scanner app on my phone that let's me listen in to the repeaters. DTAR, VHF, UHF, etc. I never usually hear much except other hams making small talk. Not sure it's worth the investment.

Ham radio is more than just the FM VHF/UHF repeater talk. The shortwave bands are where the real action will be for long range communications.
