In the depths of the oceans, it decomposes into methane gas. The immense pressure of the water above prevents the gas from bubbling upwards and converts it into clumps of methane hydrate solids where they are contained by the very cold conditions at the seabed. There are signs of global warming because ice at the poles is melting. If the seas warm up by 80C higher than "normal", then the methane hydrates will release bubbles of methane gas and the seas will appear to be boiling. Under this circumstance the Earth would become additionally insulated, global warming would increase, and the temperature would rise alarmingly. And the hot air would now convert the methane gas into carbon dioxide. They have the vent wells shut in to build up pressure and one at the top of the cap rock is going to be plugged and abandoned. I believe this one is where the H2S was detected last week. I hope the activity I'm seeing on the recorders is not caused by pressure build up. That could back fire on them, IMHO.
