Windows 95 - Good
Windows ME - Bad

Win Vista - Bad
Windows 7 - Good
Windows 8 - ?

I can see a patern.

I've used every version of Windows since 3.1. Like you, I think Windows 7 is the best so far (I also liked Vista). I tried Windows 8 and HATED it. It's like 2 OS's in one that don't mesh well - you have the Windows 7 like desktop with the start menu removed, and the abomination formerly known as Metro in it's place. Yuck. It might be ok on a touch screen, but it doesn't work well on the desktop. Some people say it boots faster, but I didn't noticed any difference on my machines. Besides, why shut down when you can just put your computer to sleep. Resuming from sleep is much faster anyway.

Windows 8: It's Almost Not Terrible

It is precisely because it is fashionable for Americans to know no science, even though they may be well educated otherwise, that they so easily fall prey to nonsense. They thus become part of the armies of the night, the purveyors of nitwittery, the retailers of intellectual junk food, the feeders on mental cardboard, for their ignorance keeps them from distinguishing nectar from sewage. — Isaac Asimov

And don't listen to the metro haters. Some people are just resistant to change. Nothing wrong with the metro start menu. Its just tiles vs icons. You still have a desktop and a taskbar. Learn to use the charms bar and the search charm and accessing resources is even faster. Again, some people are just resistant to change. Ive been usong win8 since early Alphas. Make the upgrade while its still cheap.

I've been operating on a Macbook Pro for a couple years, upgraded systems, and never felt the need to come to GLP to get advice. Just saying........it's a much more stable operating system bro.

Apple sucks for what? Logic Pro is the best DAW and is only available for OSX.

Everytime someone has recommended a different OS, GNU/Linux or OSX, you immediately replied with "oh but you can't play games, terminals are hard, :crack324:,derp."

Cool story bro. If you want to eat hot pockets all day while you play DiaBLOW III in your basement then go for it, but to shill for Microsoft...wow that's a whole new level of retardation. I am familiar with the Apple-Fanboy, but I never thought I would actually encounter a Windows-Fanboy.

Love is not the game, life is.
-
When we wake up in this "reality" every morning, we are actually falling asleep, because only in our dreams we are truly awake.
-
We are not our body, nor our mind. We are not the voice in our body, nor our head. We are the the here and now, experiencing without any input from either of the mentioned above.
-
It's not about others forgiving you, but whether you can forgive yourself.
-
It doesn't take much energy to make the wrong decision. But to make the right one, you have to put every fiber of your being to it.
-
I know i have a lot to work on. But knowing that there's no hairy ass man in the clouds to judge me when I have little bit of fun on the expense of someone elses ignorance, makes life a whole lot easier.

Why pay for an operating system when Linux is free?

Ubuntu and Mint are super easy to use and they look and run very smooth. :)

Re: Windows 8 - should I upgrade to it?
When my dear old XP is no longer supported I'm going with Linux since I don't game.

Trying out a lot of distros but the ones I like the most so far:

Mint - Mate: Very complete and just seems to work.

PCLinuxOS: Very complete and works well. KDE but they've tweaked the kernal so it is also very fast.

Centos6: Red Hat Enterprise rebranded. Supported through 2020 for security updates. Gnome 2.38. Not complete and a lot of work to make a decent desktop but once set up should be good for 8 years.

TinyCore: Will probably use as a 2nd installed distro since it's only ~70meg and is very, very fast.

I'll take any other suggestions...

Still undecided, but one thing I will never do is buy a Mac - ridiculously overpriced junk - and yes I've tried it before, no thanks!
