Like you, I think Windows 7 is the best so far (I also liked Vista). I tried Windows 8 and HATED it. It's like 2 OS's in one that don't mesh well - you have the Windows 7 like desktop with the start menu removed, and the abomination formerly known as Metro in it's place. Yuck. It might be ok on a touch screen, but it doesn't work well on the desktop. Some people say it boots faster, but I didn't noticed any difference on my machines. Besides, why shut down when you can just put your computer to sleep. Resuming from sleep is much faster anyway. Some people are just resistant to change. Nothing wrong with the metro start menu. Its just tiles vs icons. You still have a desktop and a taskbar. Trying out a lot of distros but the ones I like the most so far: Mint - Mate: Very complete and just seems to work. PCLinuxOS: Very complete and works well. KDE but they've tweaked the kernal so it is also very fast. Centos6: Red Hat Enterprise rebranded. Supported through 2020 for security updates. Gnome 2.38. Not complete and a lot of work to make a decent desktop but once set up should be good for 8 years. TinyCore: Will probably use as a 2nd installed distro since it's only ~70meg and is very, very fast. I'll take any other suggestions... R. |
