AtsuiPanda User ID: 16510251 United States 10/31/2012 10:42 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Its probably might stop alot of malware also , most of these viruses people get are written in VB6 they are half ass free clients nuubs use and i HEAR its not supported properly and the other reason is .net frame has to be installed by the user instead of already on the machine alot of malware need this also but it doesnt mean that you wont get them, its just might cut down. As a desktop OS, it does seem a bit quicker than Windows 7. Once I log in, I go straight to the Desktop mode anyway... so it's almost identical to what I'm used to. I do somewhat miss the quickness of clicking the Start orb to open my most commonly used programs, but I'm getting used to it. The only thing I really use the "Metro" interface for is playing solitaire or minesweeper :) EDIT: Almost forgot... the new Task Manager is wonderful. Anonymous Coward User ID: 22775126 Canada 10/31/2012 10:59 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ...I'm thinking about upgrading to Windows 8. I can apparently get windows 8 pro for 39.99 if I directly download it (69.99 if I want it mailed to me). I'd rather spend just $40 then get a whole new laptop. Quoting: amywood71605 But - should I? ...Any advice is appreciated! Oh fu$k no... I did it and im a power user... Would be great on a tablet, but not for a pc or laptop. Thanks god, I didn't do my pc |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 24009796 United States 10/31/2012 11:00 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I used the beta test version for several months then installed the $40 downloadable upgrade a few days ago. I is a little faster since the OS is better optimized for multiple processors and it has other tweeks but you won't "see" a lot of difference between 8 and 7 other than a little bit of speed and smoothness. Bill gets another $40 so maybe he won't go broke any time soon! |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 26588724 United States 10/31/2012 11:04 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I currently have machines at home that run Fedora, a couple running Ubuntu (my kids laptops).. however I have to admit my primary two machines are Windows 7 (that is the area that pays the bills for me). I have 4 machines at work with Windows 8 Pro and two with Windows 8 Enterprise recently installed. Aside from a faster boot into the desktop, there has been NO speed increases that we observed. Look at tomshardware.com for comparisons as well. The previously known interface called Metro is a pain in the ass. Click on an image, and it launches some new video thingy.. no buttons to exit. Hit escape... nothing. Hit the Windows key and it goes away, but guess what - the program is still running with your picture on it (took a bit to figure that out) - meaning resources taken. No direct way to get to control panel. Its like that with audio, video, still images, etc, etc. You want to run an app that isn't linked or have an icon on your desktop? It took a search to find out that you have to Windows Key + R to do it. Oh, and it continually pulls info from the web bullshit. Hey, I new Istanbul's weather.. I guess that helped me. In my opinion, stick with Windows 7. |

I can see a patern. You're missing Windows 98 in there, which was great. And Vista was terrible at launch, then became decent over time (it's reputation never really recovered, though). 8 seems good so far, just different. No blue screens, no driver issues whatsoever. Certainly better than I was expecting. |

I will wait 6 months and test in virtualbox before installing. |

Yeah.. found that Windows Key + X gave you the "power user" menu. The problem is, it isn't intuitive in directing one to where they want to go. I have to evaluate deploying this thing on over 1000 stations across all the continents with users ranging from experienced and resourceful to barely able to check email.... not looking good for Windows 8 so far with this consideration. |

Yep, I can see it being an issue for some. There are definitely a lot of little quirks and tricks that you'd either have to look up or find by accident. |

Sounds like they need Android tablets instead of PC's. |
