Like you, I think Windows 7 is the best so far (I also liked Vista). I tried Windows 8 and HATED it. It's like 2 OS's in one that don't mesh well - you have the Windows 7 like desktop with the start menu removed, and the abomination formerly known as Metro in it's place. Yuck. It might be ok on a touch screen, but it doesn't work well on the desktop. Some people say it boots faster, but I didn't noticed any difference on my machines. Besides, why shut down when you can just put your computer to sleep. Resuming from sleep is much faster anyway. Trying out a lot of distros but the ones I like the most so far: Mint - Mate: Very complete and just seems to work. PCLinuxOS: Very complete and works well. KDE but they've tweaked the kernal so it is also very fast. Centos6: Red Hat Enterprise rebranded. Supported through 2020 for security updates. Gnome 2.38. Not complete and a lot of work to make a decent desktop but once set up should be good for 8 years. TinyCore: Will probably use as a 2nd installed distro since it's only ~70meg and is very, very fast. I'll take any other suggestions... R. |
