I am not necessarily looking at that aspect as that comes second. Really the concern is, can the supplies actually get to the area.

The reality is that the area is the largest population concentration in the US, and to keep the millions there supplied, is difficult as it is.

Also, knowing the mentality in the area, they are all used to having everything the need, all the time, no questions asked.

That has changed. Hoboken has proved it too. 36 hours to freak out.

I agree OP, this situation is volatile and ready to ignite. You are very correct in saying that is difficult to supply this part of the US anyhow, but it hasn't seemed so because it is routine. Everyday insane shipments in and insane amounts of people processing shit. Then insane amounts of trash and literal shit being dealt with.

Disruptions are not welcome in this system.

2. No estimates of being reopened
3. The largest Pipeline in the area is apparently still closed as well.
4. Apparently the debris in the harbor is causing some ships props to fail, with many ships floating in disrepair
5. New York Harbor stores 75 million barrels of oil
6. Recieves 900,000 barrels per day as of August 2012
7. Ships are only allowed into the harbor area with permission from the Port Captain's approval...called "Condition Yankee"
8. One barge is beached on Staten Island

Though this may be true what is concerning is that starting from the inlet, which starts at the Verrazano Bridge, on up both sides of the Hudson River and both sides of the East River are mostly all docks. The shores of Brooklyn, West Shores of Staten Island...Just have a look at Google Maps.

Then you have large canals that weave around the marshes on the Jersey side which lead into Port Elizabeth and slightly further inland.

Anyone who has landed at Newark Airport, sees this total dump, especially landing from the South. This dump that everyone laughs at moves an insane amount of goods on a daily basis that effects the whole country. There are container mountains at Port Elizabeth that are stacked 30-40 containers high or more almost like Pyramids.

I did see a picture of Liberty State Park Train Terminal, which was the starting point of millions of Immigrants after Ellis Island...totally destroyed. If you look on a map of that surrounding area, to the south, west and north you will get the magnitude of the situation.

Anyhow, will keep searching for reports of damage and delays.

Last few nights truckers are speaking of not being able to deliver their cargo into the affected areas of NY, NJ, etc.
It's a cascading problem. Truckers can't deliver, are stuck in truck stops with a full payload and they can't pick up another payload and continue on. Gridlock in the trucking industry.

Honestly I think they should be declaring a holiday for everyone whose job doesn't immediately help "reboot" the city. Gas used up and traffic jams caused by people getting to work, 90% of which could be put off a week without hurting the recovery work.
Save the fuel and space for critical work, food delivery, fuel, and workmen.

I'm guessing the cascading effect I spoke about above.
Trucks full of goods are sitting on loads that should have been delivered days ago. Trucks cannot pick up next load for next delivery. Your Coke is probably sitting on a loading dock somewhere in the midwest.

This would put more people in the way of the clean up and perhaps lead to more looting.

Gas in SW Ohio has jumped almost $.50 in the past two days.

Yeah the cascading effect will unfold, but hopefully not too bad.

One example would be that the rail lines are torn up and that requires Steel, which is now made mostly in China, which has to come into Port, which is Closed. Of course it could come in through Los Angeles and then train over which takes 1 to 2 weeks.

So who knows how long to make the rails and ship them over. Could be weeks to months, not days.

Not sure if they have emergency rail line stock piles around though.

More than half of all gasoline service stations in the New York City area and New Jersey were shut because of depleted fuel supplies and power outages, frustrating attempts to restore normal life, industry officials said.

Reports of long lines, dark stations and empty tanks circulated across the region. Some station owners were unable to pump fuel due to a lack of power, while others quickly ran their tanks dry because of increased demand and logistical problems in delivering fresh supplies.

The lack of working gasoline stations is likely to compound travel problems in the region, with the New York City subway system down until at least Thursday and overland rail and bus services severely disrupted.

Homeowners and businesses relying on back-up generators during the power cuts, including many Wall Street banks in lower Manhattan, may also run short of fuel.

Still nothing about food supplies and other goods though

I sure hope residents will do their best to keep their heads on squarely and tap in to their common sense in dealing with these issues.

Now is the time for people to start working together. Example, people are driving 50 or more miles in search of gas. At some point, how far is too far? What would be best would be for residents to group together to go out in search of gas for their generators, utilizing only one vehicle per two or three people.

Hopefully the gas stations will begin to ration so that everyone receives their fair share. Hopefully once the power comes back on, the gas situation will have some relief from need for gas for generators. However, right now, this should be a priority. People loosing the food that they do have would be tragic.

Now is the time for bartering as well. Those who run out of gas for their generators might be able to share their perishable items in return for non-perishable.

I don't live in the area but do work for a company in the area. I have been told stories that have warmed my heart, like people sharing their generators with neighbors who don't have one....foresaking their own ability to have enough for all their own needs for another. Seems that hot water is coveted right now....I can understand that.

One of these articles showed pics of huge gas lines off the turnpike. I sure hope to GOD that people traveling through the area on the turnpike will be sure they have enough gas to see them through this section as to not get themselves stranded and even more, put a bigger burden on gas comsumption in these areas.
