NY HARBOR UPDATE:

All seems to be done for the day now that it is dark.

19 total Container Ships Docked with 3 unloading and leaving Port.

75,633 TEUs extimate and assuming they were all full.

Would take roughly 37,816 trucks to move that new supply.

***Made an error in earlier math on trucks needed. Now corrected for Trucks. Sorry, a little brain strain today***

Either way it is a difficult task.

There are 3 Container ships in the staging area off Long Island and 1 other within range.

We are now heading into Day 11 with no Trains.

There were no Tankers (Oil or Other) that docked today and 1 left the harbor ARTIC EXPRESS and went back to the staging area off of Long Island. 1 More tanker is within Range.

Oil and Fuel Spills:

"About 7,700 gallons of fuel spilled from Phillips 66's 238,000 barrels-per-day Bayway refinery in Linden, N.J"

"The Coast Guard also said it had recovered 780,000 gallons of an oil-water mixture from Kinder Morgan's Perth Amboy, New Jersey"

that being said,can i get a total on the normal b4 sandy shipping<a total of cargo in average/day>and a total since the storm. b nice if it was broke down into food/cargo boxcars, and fuel.am curious to see how much food,cargo,and fuel hasnt been unloaded as opposed to what shoulda been.

Hi Jazz. Thanks for the compliments. It really does mean a lot to us all.

Give me some time and I will try and put together a quick post on those questions. I think I have some of those numbers in earlier posts so I will get them together.

I will say that the amount of Fuel appears to be Zero as no Tankers have docked, though the Coloniel Pipeline is open but also, it is impossible to tell what is on board all of these ships and I do not believe it is publically available information.

All I can do is give the big picture as comparison to pre storm.

Give me a little while though. I am also working on Rail Deliveries. What is normal flow and what types of products are delivered.

OK Here is an overview of the situation from what information has been collected. This is the big picture as it is virtually impossible to know the following from public information:

1. What products are on board
2. How much of a product is on board.

NY HARBOR NORMAL Volume:

IMPORTS:

A TEU is a 20ft Container Equivalent

Cargo by Ship: 5,500,000 TEUs/year
Cargo by Train: 422,144 Containers (Have not found TEUs)

Guess 60% are 40ft containers and 40% are 20ft
So 253,286 40ft would be 126,643 TEUs
And 20fts would be 168,857 TEUs

Total By Train = 295,500 TEUs/year

I am using really simple averages for simplicity.

Cargo by Ship = 15,068 TEUs/day (365 day year)
Cargo by Train = 809 TEUs/day

Total = 15,877

The Docks were closed for 9 Days so a back up of 135,612 TEUs

As of Today AT BEST roughly 75,633 TEUs delivered today.

This assumes all ships were full which is not likely the case.

Trains have been down for 10 days now

8090 TEUs not delivered

Nothing in from the Trains yet.

It looks like at this moment there are 3 Container ships before The Nor'Easter Hits

OIL AND FUEL

1. Prior to the Storm there was a 23 day supply of gas at normal usage.
2. NY Harbor brings in 900,000 barrels/day prior to Sandy

What was reported in the news is as follows:

1. The Pipelines (Coloniel and other) is 15% of the supply and was down
2. 2 Refineries that were down is 23% of the supply
3. Port of NY is Closed. 20% of the Supply

So initially the total Gas Supply was down a very large amount.

The entire TriState Area (NJ, CT and ALL of NY State)
30,297,994gal/day

There are lines that come to NOrthwest NY and some comes in through Boston.

1. The Pipelines are Open so add back 15% supply
2. 2 Refineries are still down at the moment
3. No Tankers have docked as we have seen it

So in theory, the incoming supply is down 43% at the moment.

AS I AM WRITING THIS TWO TANKERS ARE MOVING INTO THE HARBOR

As for the Tankers waiting to dock there is just no way to tell what is on board and how much. They carry Crude Oil, Gasoline, Other Petroleum Products, Chemicals, etc.

My estimation this morning of the BEST CASE of how much is on board the ships waiting was 229,005,000 gallons of goo. This is assuming they are full which is not likely the case.

PREDICTION

The supply will be wavy at best for food and gas. And really that is all that I am thinking about rather than furniture or toys.

Now that you have Power coming back on more people will be out and about consuming more fuel and food. This Nor'Easter is really going to hider the Harbor again whcih sucks.

The Trains are concerning because of Food imports. Yes there is a lot that comes in on trucks but I did look at a list of Food Warehouses and most are near Perth Amboy, Port Elizabeth, Port Newark and Bayonne. This is where the trains come in to unload.

Also, Planes are partially hindered because of the fuel shortage so flying things in is a little dicey.

If it were me in the area I would be doing the opposite of what the crowds are doing. Everyone rushing for gas, go get food. Everyone going for food, go get gas. Stay off sequence and stay away from the crowds. tha's just me though.

I still think we need Chinooks picking up the tanker trucks and hauling them on over to Staten Island and taking them back when they are unloaded.

Add to that. For the rest of the East Coast I think you are looking at things other than Food and Fuel. Mainly what comes off the containers so Furniture, Clothes, etc., but I do not think it is going to be out of control. We will see what people report in. It is so complex it is hard to see.

Philly is also bringing in Fuel too so that is helping as well. A lot of the tankers were diverted there in the past few days so it is not lost, just delayed. Wavy.

Never know. They are getting more involved over in Staten Island and the Rockaways so we will see.

Good catch on the TEU math! I hope they get those container ships unloaded... Bummer about the trains.

A couple of years ago our company held a training session at a West coast terminal. The manager there at the fleet hdq told us that our US container ports are all woefully behind the times. He said that in Europe they do all their unloading with equipment, literally no humans involved. He told us that it is so much faster and more efficient, a ship is in and out, zip zip. But we can't get that at our ports here because of the you-know-who's. Of course, a mechanized terminal would not have as many jobs, I guess it is give and take.

One thing that was really an unforgettable experience is that after the class was over, we got to go up into a big harbor crane. Unfortunately there were no containers to be unloaded, but the operator showed us how the crane works and ran it up and down a couple of times to show us how the cabling works. There are huge looms of cable up there in big loops, impressive. Ports are very interesting places. :-)

Tha must have been an awesome experience. I will say that this is a very cool experience just seeing how everything moves around and all. It is really fascinating. One of the things that made me concerned about the situation was playing Global Crisis 2020(PC Games). Holy Crap is that complex. One little thing in the supply is missing and your country comes to a halt.

As for the automated ports, I wonder if in fact in this situation it is a good thing that we have actual man power at our docks as they are hands on with the clean up and everything. Amazing people at those docks right now. I think it would be awesome to run one of those cranes!

Turns out Pramoni was hijacked by Somali pirates 2 January 2010 in the Gulf of Aden.

Anyway she's made it as far as Owls Head Treatment Center which is about as far as they get before turning back. Do you have any idea why the tankers are only going this far then they're turning back?

You may have a better view than any of us but I think the power is still out at the docks on the New York side so no place to unload. Maybe why Cuomo was screaming so loudly today about the power companies.

I would think that Futures Contracts may have something to do with it too as if no delivery is made than people make/lose money fast.

The other thing I noticed is that the Big Bastards out waiting. They are too big for the Upper Harbor so they would be going to Linden/Perth Amboy so that they didn't have to cross under the bridges, so that area is still out as well for various reasons.

That is a very interesting history on that ship too. Hope its not still Hijacked!

I've been out to the Corning area many times. beautiful out there.

That is interesting about the Walmart. They may have diverted some of their supply to the more needed places for restock but definitely keep us posted on that because you never know. Maybe being a little further out you will actually see shortages sooner because of the lower frequency of deliveries.

Just don't know how it all plays out but we are about to find out.

Thanks for the Philly update. That Paulsboro facility can only store 90,800 barrels so it will be overloaded quick unless they are getting trucks in and out of there.

It seems to be about 1 or 2 Tankers a day docking in Philly. Does that seem right?

Nothing on their page about the storm. They probably have meat stored to last for a while. Their rail traffic does not seem that significant, only about 11 cars per day at 250 working day/year. They must be depending on truck delivery.

They feed New York during good times and bad.

The wholesalers of the Hunts Point Produce Market in the Bronx have trucked about two tons of fruits and vegetables to Superstorm Sandy victims in Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island.

"When people are in trouble, the first thing they need is food," said Chris Armata, president of E. Armata, Inc., a 120-year-old family business. "We always try our best to help."

The Oyster Bay, Long Island resident lost electricity during the record squall but suffered nothing like the people of Coney Island, Breezy Point and Staten Island.

"We had no clue how severe the damage was until we got to work Tuesday night and turned on the TV," Armata said. "It was devastating."

He and other Hunts Point wholesalers packed three trucks with produce last Friday and loaded up a fourth truck Monday morning, said Myra Gordon, executive administrative director of the market.

They shipped about 4,000 pounds of oranges, apples, pears, bananas, carrots, blackberries, grapes and persimmons to emergency shelters at Brooklyn Tech High School in Brooklyn, Queens College in Queens and Tottenville High School and Susan B. Wagner High School in Staten Island.

"People don't have the ability to heat food right now," Gordon said. "The city asked us to send items to eat on the spot."

As the Pundit has been jetting around Asia, our friends and family in the Northeast have been struggling with the aftermath of the storm. We work closely with Paul Kneeland, Vice President of Produce & Floral of Kings Food Markets and Chairman of the Conference Committee at the Eastern Produce Council, with whom we present The New York Produce Show and Conference.

Kings is right at the epicenter of the storm, and Paul was kind enough to send an update:

What a week……

Good news is that most everyone is safe — Staten Island, the Rockaways — not so lucky.

Hoboken was ravaged too — there was a sailboat in a parking lot — Four feet of water raced up the streets. Sidewalks are littered with soaked, ruined furniture and belongings

We lost power to 17 stores at the height of the storm. Six generators helped save some — we lost all perishable product in 11 of our stores.

We are still (as of Sunday AM) out of power in two stores and the six generators have been moved around to bring stores back on line as full power is restored. Some stores’ full power is expected by the end of the week.

It is a disaster down here, but we will all survive. Gas is a huge issue and rationing started yesterday — I waited 2 1/2 hours in line on Friday. Cell phone service is spotty — some likened it to the days after 9-11.

Nerves are frayed and patience is no longer evident.

Looting has started but just small factions — we cannot leave anything outside the stores. Thieves know power is out and battery backup is out on security systems. Generator theft is commonplace. And gas siphoning is happening all over.

If you ever saw the movie Mad Max — it is kind of like that.

We have worked hard to get all our stores open to provide the basic necessities to our neighborhoods. Our competition often cannot react the way we have. They don’t have the same flexibility.

Pallets of ice sitting on sales floors would never be considered, for example, but we still can’t keep up. One store received 18 pallets of firewood, and it was gone in two hours.

Despite all that, we had positive sales! And we beat our budget! That is with ten stores being closed last Tuesday….

Still 2 oil tankers (MAERSK MISAKI)and (EAGLE KINABALU) Anchored/Moored in the Atlantic aprox 30 miles east of the Delaware Bay Entrance. Another tanker (MCT ARCTURUS) Moving into the entrance of Delaware Bay. This should bring the mored tankers in lower Del Bay backup to 7 in about 1 hour or 2

NY HARBOR UPDATE

We have 4 newly landed Container Ships.

Brooklyn AC...You should be able to see the DUNCAN ISLAND at the Red Hook Container Terminal in Brooklyn. At least one Slip is now open of 9. It is a relatively small ship

I am only going to record newly docked ships from here as there is a lot more movement and it looks like the were working most of the night.

4 New Container ships = 18,156 TEUs at best

Interesting Development with Tankers. I am listening to the Harbor Traffic Radio and what they are trying to do is use Small barges to unload from the Large Tankers.

There seem to be 3 of these smaller barges working at the moment. Also the SCOTTY SKY is headint to the JFK Docks.

This had been announced like a week ago now. Finally starting.

QUEEN EXPRESS appears to be almost unloaded but only 60,000 barrels.

TRAINS ARE STILL CUT OFF. We are on Day 11 for the trains

RAIL UPDATE

It does seem like the Rails are a greater issue on the Exporting from NY HARBOR than on the Import so it will be interesting to see how that unfolds elsewhere in the Country.

23% of Chinese imports come through NY Harbor.
