I don't know that things are "getting quicker" but rather things are being communicated quicker.

The 'Sandy' storm-surge and direction was predicted pretty accurately using modern day methods, that's as good as is gets people! Stopping driving your S.U.V. will not stop nature from doing its thing (although I'm sure there are many Lawyers that would like to be able to blame someone/anyone).

That size of surge is not isolated to 'Sandy' but has happened several times before in the U.S. Check it out.
