that's one of the old ancient greek sea warfare tricks, along with "greek fire", a more evolved "fire water" that supposedly was way more scarce and hard to produce and handle by troops on boats.

no formula is known for "greek fire", so it supposedly is "lost knowledge" in history.

i would imagine instead that a whole coat of common "petro oleum" over a large portion of a water body to become ignited would give the "awe" of destruction to the viewers. something visually very scary but with no significant threat to us, maybe some fisherman would loose their mustaches and pipes to the flames, but the boat would survive as flames from this would be very small in height, and it would only become threatening if the boat was still without minimal water movements on the sides, the hull won't burn itself, unless we are talking about 19century prior fishboat and recreational wood hull coatings.

That water is dangerous. I hope everyone who comes close realizes it visually or by instinct and get as far away from that as they can.

Has anyone from GLP tried this down in Lousiana that are near the sinkhole are to see if your tap water will ignite. If so report it here.
