These folks may be able to help directly or raise awareness about the situation in Rockaway:

Why does everyone expect others to "Save Them" from this catastrophe?

There should be a local group of MILITIA to make the rounds of this community and check on those unable to care for themselves.

Do these folks expect a squadron of helicopters to fly in and drop food, water, medical supplies, tents etc...

I think they should lobby IRAN to send in armaments, ammo, and MRE's.

Where we had 'whining' by the NewOrleans 'victims' (victims because they CHOSE not to evacuate), the entititlement babies, we are now getting the east coast version - which is whiney loud bitching.

These people were told/recommended to evacuate and chose to stay. And were told that if they chose to stay, there may not be help for days/weeks.

They get what they asked for - AND NO MORE. I refuse to sanction hand-outs to those who chose not to prepare and not to evacuate. I am sad that they lost a lot/everything, but they were warned. You live close to a coast, you take the risk - period. All I am seeing are again the 'entitlement babies' who want the government to save them (even the mid-upper working class). Sorry folks, that is NOT what government is for, nor can it afford to save you because of your stupidity.

There are a FEW exceptions to this rule, but I dare say, not many.

Did you see this kind of crap after IKE hit the TX coast in 2008? It was a huge hurricane that was devastating as well, but you didn't see anyone with their hands out. Everyone was prepared (or evacuated), and then banded together to fix the situation. The ONLY reason Ike doesn't rate higher in cost is because ALMOST EVERYONE TOOK CARE OF THEMSELVES. No freakin handouts for stupidity.

GEEZE, people in this country need to learn to take care of themselves and NOT depend on our government to bail them out. That is what is wrong with this country.

The Jewish militias will be helping their people in Nyc and Nj. The community. What is that? Each group helps themselves. The ones screaming for help are the white yuppies and poor. They're the ones who vote Odumbo.

Well, I knew this would happen going into posting this here on GLP... Sadly predictable the absolute lack of brain power some of you have... My only point was to help spread the word to folks that MAY be thinking of helping out but don't know how or what to expect :)

If you had read the actual OP, you would see that not once is begging or asking for a handout mentioned. My friend was trying to instruct those who do have hearts HOW to help, NOT "SAVE US WE'RE DYING OUT HERE!!!" That's okay though, folks show their true colors beautifully here on GLP, and there IS such a thing as karma... (or wrath of God, for all you spaghetti monster folks...) :)

Sure, those who stayed are now having an issue getting out but ANYONE who lost a house or is just stumbling around has been approached and picked-up by the NY National Guard.

Thanks!! I rarely post, but I felt this to be important for everyone to see. Please pin, anyone, if only for the night... :)
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26786972

I rarely post in non-fictional posts (I hate
current reality! lol!)...but I just had to put my
2 cents in, here.
I sent an email to my dearest friend--we have
been friends since grade school. She and her
family, grandkids, etc. live within 30 minutes
drive from Detroit, Michigan. I've been sort of
giving her little dribbles of info about the
earth changes and preparations ideas...but after
Hurricane Sandy--which DID effect Michigan--the
tides on Lake Michigan flooded areas on all
coasts just from the wind-effects going through--
I HAD TO SAY SOMETHING.
I told my friend that I appreciated that she is
waiting for the RAPTURE to take her and her family
to heaven when the really bad stuff hits. But
even if I had this mind-set in my back pocket
with my religious beliefs, I would STILL get myself
and family as far away from a large city and a
large body of water--ANY WATER--ASAP--SHE WAS
JUST FURIOUS WITH ME!
It really hurts me because alot of my friends are
dead now...all my family is gone...my kids have
moved to rural areas or out of the country. To
have to write a FINAL EMAIL to my friend that she
may be in HARM'S WAY IN MICHIGAN/DETROIT AREA and
to tell her that she will NOT FLOAT UP TO HEAVEN
INTO THE ARMS OF JESUS when the floods and the
chaos from Detroit-in-disaster-mode HITS HER
LITTLE TOWN....that she
is being SHORT-SIGHTED AND JUST PLAIN IGNORANT
to expose her family to danger and not leave that
area and prepare....really has me depressed.
We won't be communicating anymore. I feel like
the lady in "TWELVE MONKIES" with the Casandra
Complex. Boy....Hurricane Sandy should be a
HUGE WAKE-UP CALL TO ANYONE IGNORING THEIR FAMILY
AND FRIEND'S ADVICE NOW. Just sayin'......

Think what you will my friend :) Yes, certain areas DO have power for him to send this to me. He had a place to go when it all went down and went there. Yes, he has been able to get back and forth (to a certain degree) from his current place of refugeeing to his now destroyed house. As far as the NYNG, well, I'm gonna believe a LONG time CLOSE friend (who is NOT a doomer or conspiracy nut...) that actually lives there over someone armchair quarterbacking this event from a MSM news feed :)

I have a really really tough time with feeling sorry for people who HAD PLENTY OF WARNINGS about what was about to happen ... and STILL did NOT even minimally prepare apparently.

Tornadoes ... Minutes of warnings at best, often none.

MOST Hurricanes along the Gulf and SE Coast, exact location often only known for a day or so

THIS Hurricane ... All over the news for 3 days ahead of time (for those NOT paying attention) as to it's EXACT Landfall and EXACT Strenght with general warnings coming out two days before that in the mass media (TV, Weather Channel, Newspapers, Radio, etc). For those paying attention they had a full week's warning.

When one lives in a low lying area along ANY coast of North America (including the Great Lakes) one knows there is water and wind risk. imo ... IF YOU WANT THE VIEW OR THE LOCATION YOU ARE ACCEPTING THAT RISK.

Now if people were running out of water after 3 days and food after 1 week ... THEN they may have prepared properly, but with just not enough (and there is a limit as to what one can store, or afford to store, in a small apartment, high rise, or even small house). CRYING about a VOLUNTARY Lack of Preparation before then? ... GROW UP!

When my kids left home THEY had to figure a LOT of things out since we treated them as self sufficient adults. Screw up their budget and run out of food before the next pay day? Well ... as I told one son, "I guess you will get hungry over the next couple of days." Guess what? It NEVER happened again, and he finally took my advice and stocked a pantry with a couple of weeks of food AND a way to cook it if he lost utilities. It was a good learning lesson for him at the ripe old age of 19.

How did Obama let this happen? He had days and days to have relief efforts started and moving in that direction. Days to prepare. What was he doing?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26289613

Give Obama a break. They did prepare. Hydro crews on stand by and everything. You have to realize that you cannot prepare fully for somthing like this. Just react to it after. People were told to get out. Maybe they will listen next time. There were plenty of shelters set up all over. If I were some of these people I would have found out where the closest fema camp was and gone there also. The roads are blocked. Power is down and some serious infrustructure has been wiped out. They told everybody that power and fuel was going to be an issue after the fact. Can't cry about it now.

Instead of pointing fingers go see what YOU can do to help. Get off your ass and go be a fellow human being. Go around your neiborhood and collect stuff and organize some relief or shut the fffffff up.
 Quoting: TrinityMountain

That doesn't matter. They were told to leave in Katrina and didn't and the President was supposed to take care of them anyway. That's what I was told on the tv so I know it is true. This is the same. Obama is not taking care of them. There are people eating out of dumpsters and looting. No electricity back yet.

The President handles hurricanes and is supposed to make sure it is all good right after. That is what I was told on tv so it is true.

Why is Obama acting like Bush?

I hear what you are saying, but EVERYWHERE in the WORLD has potential for some type of Natural disaster (more and more now a days with the global changes in environment we see constantly). I DO agree with prepping, but it is truly impossible to prep for everything and have every contingency covered (unless you have a LOT of $$). There will ALWAYS be folks who cannot afford to or are too disabled to leave, much less prep for an impending event. I'm not sure where you're at poster, but the VAST majority of our nations population lives on a coast, if you think in the coming years it will just be "low-lying" areas affected, I'm in the mtns of CO, YOU'RE ALL LOW LYING :) Down the road, when you're all trying to get up here, I'll try not to be too rude to those of you who didn't prep ;)

Here it comes....blame Obama! Just like they blamed Bush.

Listen, I AM NO FAN Of Obama, but there is bureaucracy. It's RED TAPE, and regardless of what "THE ONE" said about he would cut through the red tape, it can't happen.

Things take time. Yes, people are suffering, but it's their own damn fault! IF they had 3-5 days worth of provisions - LIKE THEY'VE BEEN TOLD TO HAVE - they could at least ride that out, till the cavalry arrived.

AND this is an EPIC disaster. Larger than Andrew, larger than Katrina, in size, and probably will prove to be in scope as well. EVERYTHING CAN'T BE FIXED AT ONCE.

People need to be rescued. People need to be evacuated from dangerous places. Transportation needs to get moving so people can get in/out. Gasoline needs to get to more stations, but that requires electricity, which is out.

People need food/water/heat/blankets.

All of this is needed for over 10-20 million people or more.

Which do you want to do first? Cause ya can't do them ALL at once.

Those people who STAYED, and even ARGUED that it couldn't happen to NY,or they did not want their houses to be looted if they left. I don't even want to hear from them! They were more concerned about losing some "stuff" to looters than losing their lives.

Stupid is as stupid does.

The Rockaways are like this: the western portions are largely blue collar, working class white people. The eastern parts, (Far Rockaway) is largely black and a crime ridden shithole. Largely housing projects.. I don't know, but I am guessing these projects get power from underground lines, which would be less likely to fail.

The white areas are largely private homes, they may have above ground power lines, with a more likely chance to be out of power. 111 homes burnt to the ground the´night of the hurricane.

The blacks are already looting in Brooklyn (liquor stores and big screen tv's), any chance they see.
As for people "getting out", where are they supposed to go?? These people have jobs they have to go to:firemen and cops don't get time off during these things. Quite the contrary, they are working non-stop. It's not like they can flee to a vacation home on the Riviera.

Prepare, yes, as best you can, but you simply cannot prepare for everything. Sometimes the circumstances are just too overwhelming.

The shit will really hit the fan when/if the EBT cards stop working. Then we will see a shitstorm.

I just got word from my friend and her family that live on Long Island. They live in an area I have not heard mentioned on national news, Baldwin. Their house flooded up 5 feet on the first floor. Their shed, cabana, and jacuzzi torn away and gone, all the hotels in NY are full, but fortuneately were able to leave the state for the weekend. But come monday they are hoping they found a hotel that will house them and their dogs for a while.

They still have no power, heat or water. I just don't see this getting fixed for weeks at a minimum and how do you live in a house that was that flooded? Oh and is filled with mud and sea grass.

It's going to be cold soon, this is just going to be a nighmare, and these are people just like you and me struggling to even know what to do. I mean how do you go to work and send your kids to school when you don't have a place to stay?

I'm not a big fan of the Red Cross. The volunteers do yeoman's work, but the administration is top heavy with known waste and corruption. Remember the squabbles over the 9/11 fund and the debacle of emergency fund debit cards used to pay for lap dances after Katrina?

That huge fireworks display was the Huge transformer that used to provide power to lower Manhattern - it's Fuked.
It will take years to make another one (in China!) ant then install it.

How many billions even trillions worth of real estate just became worthless?
 Quoting: FunCoTech

The beauty of transformers is that, in cases such as this, several smaller transformers may be used in its place until it can be properly replaced.

Or, the system can just be reworked permanently around the substitutes, and then there'd be no need to get yet one more thing manufactured in China.

Salvation Army here does does a good job - hot meals every weekday evening with take home boxes for the weekend, most of the people who come in are the working poor. Any leftovers are sent home with the people who come to eat.

They call it a soup kitchen.

The government agencies call their meal programs "feeding locations", as if the people who come in are animals.

Thanks!! I rarely post, but I felt this to be important for everyone to see. Please pin, anyone, if only for the night... :)

I rarely post in non-fictional posts (I hate
current reality! lol!)...but I just had to put my
2 cents in, here.
I sent an email to my dearest friend--we have
been friends since grade school. She and her
family, grandkids, etc. live within 30 minutes
drive from Detroit, Michigan. I've been sort of
giving her little dribbles of info about the
earth changes and preparations ideas...but after
Hurricane Sandy--which DID effect Michigan--the
tides on Lake Michigan flooded areas on all
coasts just from the wind-effects going through--
I HAD TO SAY SOMETHING.
I told my friend that I appreciated that she is
waiting for the RAPTURE to take her and her family
to heaven when the really bad stuff hits. But
even if I had this mind-set in my back pocket
with my religious beliefs, I would STILL get myself
and family as far away from a large city and a
large body of water--ANY WATER--ASAP--SHE WAS
JUST FURIOUS WITH ME!
It really hurts me because alot of my friends are
dead now...all my family is gone...my kids have
moved to rural areas or out of the country. To
have to write a FINAL EMAIL to my friend that she
may be in HARM'S WAY IN MICHIGAN/DETROIT AREA and
to tell her that she will NOT FLOAT UP TO HEAVEN
INTO THE ARMS OF JESUS when the floods and the
chaos from Detroit-in-disaster-mode HITS HER
LITTLE TOWN....that she
is being SHORT-SIGHTED AND JUST PLAIN IGNORANT
to expose her family to danger and not leave that
area and prepare....really has me depressed.
We won't be communicating anymore. I feel like
the lady in "TWELVE MONKIES" with the Casandra
Complex. Boy....Hurricane Sandy should be a
HUGE WAKE-UP CALL TO ANYONE IGNORING THEIR FAMILY
AND FRIEND'S ADVICE NOW. Just sayin'......

If I were you, I'd maybe not send that final email. It sounds like you're just repeating what you already told her and now are just nagging her. That is not going to be effective in getting her to act differently.

You've done all you can, maybe just let things chill out a bit and you might be able to call her a friend again sometime later. Good luck.

these "authorities" clowns need to move the Army and the National Guard into Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey
right now, today, and begin massive airlift and trucking
armadas of supplies, before this gets out of control.

glp fanatics trying to save face after saying the entire new york was going to break off into the sea and the world was practically going to end from the storm. so now they try to make up conspiracies saying things are far worse than they ever were.

The entire northern hemisphere is about to be plunged into the longest coldest winter in history and millions will be without food water and heat for months.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1290427

In the US, forecasts show temps above average this winter for much of the country and precipitation below average. It probably won't be warmer than last winter, but not too bad.

As for the storm, it did an incredible amount of damage. Everyone that I spoke to back in NY said it was much worse than they had anticipated.
