The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is an agency of the United States Department of Homeland Security, initially created by Presidential Reorganization Plan No. 3 of 1978 and implemented by two Executive Orders on April 1, 1979.[1][4] The agency's primary purpose is to coordinate the response to a disaster that has occurred in the United States and that overwhelms the resources of local and state authorities.

From another forum:

kennethelamb (signed in using yahoo)
I was wondering how long it would be before the shock overcame the awe. I've chased 38 hurricanes over the past 18 years for NYC's biggest paper, and for the largest paper in SE FL; been in the eye of 30 of them. So please take this with the experience I have while writing about this topic.

Bloomberg was another Nagin with his completely unrealistic predictions about when things would "get back to normal." Nagin said New Orleans would be up and running in 90 days. Bloomberg had the transit system running in "2 or 3 days," - that's by tomorrow! - and the electrical up in "3 to 5 days," an equally delusional prediction. Why do they tell such lies?

You people are a combination of Ivan and Katrina. If you want the Real World of what to expect, read up on them. The pictures of your area could substitute for the devastation photographed in Pensacola from Ivan, and Mississippi and Louisiana from Katrina. It will take years to rebuild. More than you can now expect will never be rebuilt.

I am, like many of you, amazed at the cold, callous, judgment of Bloomberg about the Marathon and other priorities. You have people who are beyond destitute - and the top priority is not them. It is taking care of his fellow banksters and Wall Streeters; the everyday people be damned.

Let me give you the Reality Check that Bloomberg, et al. won't give you: 1) It will be at least two weeks before you are done rescuing people. You'll know it's over when they go from people sniffing dogs, to cadaver sniffing dogs; 2) You'll be lucky if you have electricity restored everywhere in two weeks; don't be surprised if some areas are out for nearly a month.; 3) As supplies of food and fuel disappear, it's going to get violent; 4) As the police begin to drop out from their 80-hours shifts, the looters will be out - look for the National Guard or US Army to finally restore order; 5) The insurance companies are going to withhold every penny they can from you - the truth is they don't have the funds to pay out what it will cost to pay off policies and I'm sure incredible numbers of people don't have flood insurance because they never thought it would ever flood, a la New Orleans; 6) Price gouging will be widespread as supplies dwindle; 7) Rebuilding will take years because of a) lack of people to do the work, and b) lack of money to pay for it - see the remark about the lack of flood insurance to understand why; 8) Some will never rebuild, a la New Orleans and Pensacola; 9) Drug and alcohol abuse will skyrocket, and with them domestic and street violence as people find no other outlet to dissipate stress and depression; 10) The use of mental health facilities, and stress related illnesses will also skyrocket, putting major demands on money for medical and prescription costs; 11) Bankruptcy of cities, townships, counties, and maybe even the state will become the only way out for over-burdened governments; 12) Bankruptcy will also sweep through all the marginal businesses in the area - they won't survive the timeline that they need to restore cash flow - and you can count on the banksters to do absolutely nothing to help them. The banksters aren't about to lend out the money they can write to themselves as multimillion dollar bonuses.

That's the top of the list for you. It's the Real World that you about to live. There is no easy way out - only the toughest will survive - the rest will end up dead from the stress, from suicide, from drug overdoses, or simply move away unable to cope with the devastation.

I pray for every one of you. There is no way to sugarcoat what you are about to experience.

i donot think i quite understand.
Youare blaming all the above on Sandy ! ! ? Or what?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26792765

No, what he is listing is not quite present tense. It is in the very near future. Read it again, he's saying he's seen this personally, in his experience as a storm-chaser. I would say it sounds pretty accurate.

Not all civilians. But you can bet your bippy clearing places like Far Rockaway inhabitants would be clearing a whole lotta ghetto areas, city projests, and a perfect time to start building condos, just like they have done in many many other areas in NYC

no. Do what God did when He wanted to cleans a people. What did He do when Moses took everyone out of bondage? He cleansed them, and we can do the same, and hereis how:

When ever you vote, for about the next 20 years or less (It took God 40 years, but he had to wait for them to breed), vote out every single person on the ballot, and replace them with a brand, spanking new guy (no matter who, just so he is new). Do this for about 20 years until the entire government is cleansed of the diseased minds thatare in there now, along with all their relatives, friends, connections, and silly, old farts in general. Where we had 'whining' by the NewOrleans 'victims' (victims because they CHOSE not to evacuate), the entititlement babies, we are now getting the east coast version - which is whiney loud bitching.

These people were told/recommended to evacuate and chose to stay. And were told that if they chose to stay, there may not be help for days/weeks.

They get what they asked for - AND NO MORE. I refuse to sanction hand-outs to those who chose not to prepare and not to evacuate. I am sad that they lost a lot/everything, but they were warned. You live close to a coast, you take the risk - period. All I am seeing are again the 'entitlement babies' who want the government to save them (even the mid-upper working class). Sorry folks, that is NOT what government is for, nor can it afford to save you because of your stupidity.

There are a FEW exceptions to this rule, but I dare say, not many.

Did you see this kind of crap after IKE hit the TX coast in 2008? It was a huge hurricane that was devastating as well, but you didn't see anyone with their hands out. Everyone was prepared (or evacuated), and then banded together to fix the situation. The ONLY reason Ike doesn't rate higher in cost is because ALMOST EVERYONE TOOK CARE OF THEMSELVES. No freakin handouts for stupidity.

GEEZE, people in this country need to learn to take care of themselves and NOT depend on our goverment to bail them out. That is what is wrong with this country.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 18256304

You seem to forget there IS a lot of people trapped there simply because they did not have any funds to prepare with, LIVING ON THE BREADLINE. With the economy right over the world as it is, millions can now not even afford to buy anything extra.

And you call yourself HUMANE, you are a selfish ignoramus that sticks his nose in the air because NOW you are better than them. tsk tsk PRIDE is an awful weapon sadly it works for him, what has the world come to ?

I live in Long Island and please let me tell you about how much the media is LYING.

They say much of the power has been restored; this is a lie. While some people are seeing their power come back, MOST of the areas are still without power.

They say that their is already a return to normalty; this is a LIE. We are almost out of gas ALL OVER the island; the few gas stations that are still open have 3 hour long waits.

They say there are many relief efforts and coast guards everywhere; this is a LIE. While there are a few Red Cross stations (and these VOLUNTEERS are amazing) they are very few and far between. I traveled to Long Beach today to give out water and supplies and it is a GHOST TOWN. I did not see one police officer or coast guard. There was a huge line outside the one functional supermarket, full of people just waiting for some food or water. There are no functioning water supplies in the city, no electricity, and the only other people around were those who were emptying out water from their homes and businesses.

They say that our lives are resuming as normal. This is a LIE. I know many many people who have lost everything. Thousands of businesses are still closed, including many banks. These people who lost everything cannot even go back to work, nor have access to a bank, or access to gas even if they still have a functioning car to travel to work with.

Please do not believe the media and keep us in your minds; we are still suffering. I am lucky to have power and to only have suffered superficial damage, many people weren't so lucky, and the restoration process is far from even being started for them.

Re: Just got this from a friend in Rockaway***please share!!***
Many of you have no idea what Rockaway is like. The people who stayed are not ignorant- many of them believed they had no choice. Rockaway is filled with generations of blue collar workers, like nurses, teachers, cops & firefighters as well as city commuters like office workers & execs, a minority of newly arrived yuppies/ yippees (who don't usually stay very long) AND a bunch of projects by the bay continuing into Far Rockaway. Many people didn't evacuate because they knew no one would be protecting them from looting, which is happening on a grand scale anyway. While it is in many ways a tight knit community that will band together as much as possible, the OP is so right that this will not be enough to overcome the obstacles of no food, water, electric or law and order.

Why is the city dragging its feet while people in Staten Island and Rockaway are in dire straits? This has all the portents of tragedy, and a preventable one at that. Maybe we should all chip in and rent a few helicopters to drop off supplies. Someone should suggest it to Romney...hmmm... Guess the Hollywood types are too busy having Halloween parties to mobilize ... What about the Donald? Couldn't he lend a hand?

Bloomberg & Obama are mucking it up.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 1402340

“They” want to drive the people out, and this is how they start. When the rats come, they will bring Bubonic/Prneumonic Plague, and many many babies, and elderly will die. “They” will say it is a new strain of flu that did it.

Bet “they” cleaned up all the “stray” cats from around the islands, because in a real rat infestation, your only life line is the feral cats and their kittens, poison doesnot work . . . This has been going on for years and years.

The Rockaways are like this: the western portions are largely blue collar, working class white people. The eastern parts, (Far Rockaway) is largely black and a crime ridden shithole. Largely housing projects.. I don't know, but I am guessing these projects get power from underground lines, which would be less likely to fail.

The white areas are largely private homes, they may have above ground power lines, with a more likely chance to be out of power. 111 homes burnt to the ground the´night of the hurricane.

The blacks are already looting in Brooklyn (liquor stores and big screen tv's), any chance they see.

As for people "getting out", where are they supposed to go?? These people have jobs they have to go to:firemen and cops don't get time off during these things. Quite the contrary, they are working non-stop. It's not like they can flee to a vacation home on the Riviera.

Prepare, yes, as best you can, but you simply cannot prepare for everything. Sometimes the circumstances are just too overwhelming.

The shit will really hit the fan when/if the EBT cards stop working. Then we will see a shitstorm.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: Many of you are concerned about Rockaway, and all the coastal areas affected by Hurricane Sandy. As we approach day 3 from the storm, these considerations should be made:
1 - no considerable relief effort is being made for those who chose to wait out the storm. Whether you agree with the decision to stay or not, this means tens of thousands of people now in an area with no real access to food, drinkable water, heat, etc.
2 - effort now needs to be made to deal with immediate needs first, then to move people out of this area to a safe location before things get dire.

Any of you who know the Rockaways well will understand that there is a great economic disparity within a very small area. It would be wonderful to think that everyone will do everything to be helpful and kind to each other, but as of yesterday there was NO efforts being made in the downtown area to provide food/ etc, and there is a recipe for disaster on the burner there.
If you have friends in the area, urge them to take valuable belongings and clothes, and vacate.
If you are thinking of what you can do to help, I wish I knew what to say. The efforts being made in Manhattan do not reflect what is happening in the Rockaways, and the situation is about to transition from the immediate recovery to what the coming long term situation may very well be, which is an area that will have it's major services disconnected, in an effort to force residents to leave. If you feel the need to go and help, either be FULLY prepared to rough it. Not snow-day rough it, wilderness camping rough it. If you need a definition, DO NOT GO. If you have a vehicle and wish to drive, make sure it is 4x4 and that you are an experienced driver. There is no power, no lights.

Supplies to bring and distribute:

water, power bars, granola bars, etc. Think high protein, small space.

Socks, undergarments, baby wipes

Be prepared to drive people out, people you do not know. If they do not want to go, MAKE SURE THEY KNOW THAT THROUGH THURSDAY OF NEXT WEEK, TEMPERATURES WILL BE NO HIGHER THAN 50F DURING THE DAY. This means serious risk of hypothermia for those with no capability to full warm and dry themselves.

And remember, there is no gas in NYC at the moment. Do not make the situation worse by becoming another person in need there. Use your head. Call your local representatives, re-post this. The only efforts there right now are grass-roots, and if we all put our energy into keeping those affected safe, we can keep this from becoming a bigger disaster than it already is. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
