Enough Spent on Welfare in 2011 to Give Every Poor Household Nearly $60,000
According to an October 16 memorandum prepared by the Congressional Research Service (CRS) for the Senate Budget Committee, the federal government spent $746 billion on means-tested welfare programs in 2011. As the U.S. Census Bureau notes, there were 16.8 million households living below the poverty level in America in 2011. In other words, if the federal government were to give this money directly to the impoverished households, all 16.8 million households would have received over $44,000. This is double the 2011 federal poverty rate of $22,350 for a family of four, and nearly double the 2012 poverty rate of $23,050 for a family of four.

The beaurocrats handling the money got most of it as salaries, probably. More money would reach the welfare folks if they just sent it to them. But then, the beaurocrats would be out of a job.

I don't know about that stuff whining about "welfare" but I can tell you this: the CRS report was WITHDRAWN at the insistence of congressional republicons.

Why?
Because the report found no evidence that tax cuts for high income earners lead to economic growth.

In other words, it found that supply-side trickle-down economics is A BULLSHIT SCAM.

Sadly, great majority of the adults in those families, would probably take the cash, and overdose on drugs or be involved in alcohol related crimes/accidents with in the week.

Could you imagine not ever seeing more then a few hundred dollars in one place at one time, and then suddenly having 10's of thousands?

It would be chaos, and then the money would be gone, and of course more would be needed again.

Firstly this poor household didnt get 60k, not that they deserve a penny for chilling and procreating, but the great proportion is for costs of the bureaucracy. Yes, most of the money was hijacked by Uncles minions, the gummint employee taking for themselves the forced charity from the public

Rigggghhhhhttttt..... and for every dollar actually given to the poor, about 10 is given to the highly inefficient beaurocracy that runs the programs. And if it weren't for the beaurocracy, the USA would be experiencing an extreme depression. Afterall, the government keeps people employed.

And how exactly do you know those numbers are fake?

And why is this giving a reason to 'hate on the poor'?

seems more like a reason to hate big government waste and inefficiency - doesn't it!?

Thanks a lot for making go look at an article from the New Replublican. Barf. It hurt! The figures that I have seen, the figure used in the presidential debates, are 45 million have received some sort of government assistance. The 16.8 million used for the calculations in the number of people below the federal proverty rate. (I didn't check that number to see if it was correct.)

Then I used $7.35 as the minimum wage x 40 hrs x 52 weeks and I get a salary of $15,288 for those making minimum wage working 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. So, guess what, go get a job and ya still goin be poor!

Trickle, trickle, trickle sure seems to take a long time! Prices keep going up, up, up. One of the reasons being that the rich keep buying, buying, buying driving the prices up! If no one were to buy that $30K+ car, or that gas, or those groceries seems the prices would drop in a hurry!

Welfare is not about giving help to those who need it, it is about creating jobs to distribute whats left over after paying people to distribute it. Guaranteed voters for those who promote welfare.
