These happen nearly all the time in the gulf of Alaska. Sandy was a hurricane (warm core) that transitioned to a cold core (extra-tropical) as it hit New Jersey. Hence the term Frankenstorm as it had energy from the tropics and from bar-cyclonic forces of the jet stream plus the temperature gradients.
