Yep. And Hawass did the same thing with the German Swiss engineer, Rudolf Gatenbrink. Gatenbrink and his engineering team were brought in by Hawass to build a miniature robot, "Upuat" (meaning "Opener of the Way"). Gatenbrink sent his mini robot up the shaft in the Queen's Chamber in, I think, 1993. After a couple sticking points, the robot finally made it to a stone "plug" that prevented further progress. Gatenbrink wanted to outfit Upuat with a fiber optic cable to slide under the square stone plug, butDr. Zahi Hawass (aka Zahi Huge-ass) kicked he and his team out. What Hawass does is he takes advantage of western technology, but then expels the western scientists/engineers when they're right on the cusp of a major discovery, so that Hawass can have a monopoly on the discovery, which he generally doesn't share with the rest of the world.

Each of the 3 pyramids of the Giza Plateau are closed for a year for "cleaning and repairs". Don't think for a minute that Hawass didn't use that year to independently and secretly have his Egyptian workers follow up on the discoveries made in the pyramids (and under the Sphinx) that were brought to light by western engineers and technology.
