You're going to the wrong areas for food and supplies.
I just came back from Commack, Deer Park and Northport which is just a 20-30 minute drive from the South Shore. Plenty of supermarkets open and packed with produce. Trader Joe's in Commack all stocked. The big shopping mall in Deer Park open, including the NY Sports Club. People were jogging on the treadmills and swimming in the pool.
Also got a full tank of gas two nights ago in Northport. Only two cars in front of me.
