This year we did not get a acorn crop......Lots of hickory nut which the squirrels love, but no acorns. This happens every few years. So the Blue Jays which normally store acorns for winter are out of luck. So their have been a lot more of them at the feeder taking nuts to store. I'm going into debt buying peanuts. lol

They are such pigs. My sister was complaining about the same thing. She has squirrels and now Jays and Magpies coming. She's buying three big bags a week. You could go into debt feeding them and then once you start you can't stop. GUILT.

Re: The Rain Just Won't Stop. There's somthing else really strange going on also...!
Ok so watched to see what the squirrels did last night. They started a little after dark and stayed at it till well after midnight. I put out a 20 pound bag of beets. About 100 peices. They didn't quit till they moved them all. They don't really hide them that well. Moved them all to the wood pile and just throw a few little spigets of cedar bows on them. If there had been more they would have kept at it.

I have never seen behavior like this. Squirrels never run around at night. Never. Day time only.

In 12 years they have never raided my vegtable boxes. There is lots of cones and seeds for them around here. The trees are loaded. Thats their prefered food.

Scratching my head on this behavior. Do they know somthing we don't. They have mountains of food stored for the winter and still going for it.

Very Strange. Its got me worried because of the amounts they are gathering. Everybody will say that when the squirrels gather extra food and keep it close to their beds that were going to have a bad winter with lots of snow.

I'm going to follow suit. I just ordered extra firewood and I'm going to get extra root vegtables for my storage boxes this year. Actually I'm going to do it today. Local farmer whom sells the BIG BAGS.

I gotta say I think we are way in for it this winter. I just have a bad feeling and the squirrels just have reinforced what I feel. Extra hay and feed for the livestock also. I am going to buy a snowblower also to add in the mix just in case for around my buldings where the tractor can't go.

Interesting what you are learning by watching the squirrels. Hopefully we'll all be around to compare notes next spring.

I was surprised that you don't think Haarp is conspiracy material. I thought everyone on GLP did.

Clear blue sky's all summer. Never have I seen a chemtrail and with the flight path for the Kelowna Airport near by they fly over at high elevations all the time. Never Chemtrails.

I believe more in Mother Nature and that she has her cycles. Not Harrp. Mother Nature's force can't be controlled by man. The minute we all start thinking we can were done. She will kick our asses and show us all what fools we really are. Sorry just don't buy into the Harrp thing.

Hey OP, maybe you should document this with a camera?. I'd watch your proof and suspicions.

I did. Trail infared trail camera and watched it this morning. Problem. Slow Dialup. No cell service where I live and no Cable just Satelite. I can't watch video's on the internet so can't load them either. Too bad cause it was pretty funny watching them drag around a beet that was as big as themselves. Very determend little critters. It was really funny to watch. They kept dropping them trying for the top of the wood pile. They roll them and drag them and try and get a good grip on them. Funny as hell.

You've got the best entertainment there. Far better than anything you can see on TV... we used to live in the bush and I sure miss the bird feeder (a 4 X 8 foot sheet of plywood) that the birds and the squirls frequented. We bought 2,000 lbs of oil sunflower seeds every winter to feed them. How I loved that feeder.. I could sit by the hour and be entertained.

I love how they are very picky about which peanut they take. One time I watched one take a nut, fly up into a tree and wait for about five minutes while I filled some other feeders, before he flew back and switched the peanut for another, better one. lol

The variety of birds we got was absolutely wonderful. The evening and pine grossbeaks were forward enough to peck at our windows when the feeder needed refilling.. it was great. It was comical to watch the birds gang up on the squirls to get them off the feeder.. we had a lot of laughs watching the activities on that feeder.

The gangs are funny. What a bunch of interaction going on all the time. They do mount defences and go to war. LOL

Another way to feed them is beef or pork fat for the birds. Suet. I have dogs and get meat scraps for my dogs from the Local buthcher whom processes home grown cows. I sort out all the fat and place it out for the birds. Jays and Magpies and the little chicks really love it. It gives them major energy in the winter. Raw not cooked is best. Jats and magpies will eat it as well as Woodpeckers. Actually its a great way to attract Woodpeckers.

Yup the suet is a great way to attract a whole different group of birds.. we did that too... When we lived in the bush we got a whole pork and half a beef from the abattoir so I had enough suet to last the winter for the birds.

We lived there for 13 years, grew our own veggies, had a handpump in the kitchen for water and cooked on a woodstove in the house during the winter months and an old wood cookstove outside during the summer months. Collect rain water for my laundry because our well water was really hard. It sure taught us how to live without the "so called" luxuries. It's a lot of work, but very soul satisfying work.

Two local forecasts for where I am says it should be 4 Celsius right now. I have an accurate outside thermometer and it is currently showing -2 Celcius. I know that is not particularly cold but the forecast is never 6 degrees out!! Is there an ice age moving in?

I live about 30 miles south of Portland Oregon. There are TONS of wild blackberries in Oregon, to the point where they are a MAJOR nuisance and will take over any open spot within a year or so if you don't keep eradicating them. Normally this time of year all the blackberries left on the vines turn black and moldy and "mummified"; and you'll still see them in the Spring before the new growth overtakes and covers them. We seemed to have a much more abundant crop this year than is usual, and I was looking forward to blackberry jelly without so many of the scratches which accompany the harvest. Unfortunately a health issue kept me indoors and the berries were left on the vines. Here is MY observation: there are NO berries left on the vines other than the ones which were late and/or didn't ripen! NO black, moldy, "mummified" little lumps. Gone! I don't know if it was birds, or squirrels, or aliens, but there are NO berries to be seen! Very weird!

Re: The Rain Just Won't Stop. There's somthing else really strange going on also...!
op you are one of the most intelligent people on this forum, LOL!!!! seriously!!!!

watch the animals, good advice. let me ask you something.

i too have been watching the clouds, and though there is big storm off canada/alaska, i am in portland oregon and we should be having winds moving differently in light of the existence of this storm. i too am noticing lower layer moving north, and upper layer (close above) moving east. definitely thought that was weird. been doing for weeks now.

have you also noticed geese flying north, as opposed to south, this year? autumn equinox is about when i heard the first geese, around midnight. till about 4 AM they headed north, all night, and for the next few weeks...never heard them during the day, just at night. always going north. wtf.

this morning i did see a small gaggle heading north in the morning, but they could also be local geese.

anyway, the moment i first heard them i knew the weather would change (i also heard a frog pipe up for the first time ever, when the first geese went over, so i knew something was up) it did within ten minutes...from hot summer to freezing ass cold for weeks. we now have fairly warm rain but cold at night.

Thats weird. I never really thought about the geese until you mentioned it. Ya I have seen them flying north also. They are still hanging out around here alot also. Another thing to is the Trumpet Swans are still here. Spotted a whole group of them in a field the other day grazing on the grass in a wet field. They are definetly over due to leave.

Two weeks ago the Crows were grouping up also. They say when they leave then winters on. They are very smart. There were about 1000 of them no shit. They headed North when they flew out of the valley.

wouldn't them heading north indicate that weather is going to bad horrific in the south? i dunno, very odd. could also have to do with all the radar interference but i don't know.

i mean we now know geese and migrating birds use a sort of 'magnetic shield' in their eyes, and that all the emf pollution has been messing with that....jeez remember when you could figure out what was up by just observing the birds and animals, and now there are so many interfering factors we don't know where to start?

Re: The Rain Just Won't Stop. There's somthing else really strange going on also...!
It's happening here in Texas too, I have raised mules got 20 years and this is first time my mules had a full winter coat by the 1st week in September when we still had temps in the high 80s low 90s. Usually our mules here don't start getting winter coats until late October mid November. Yup something is brewing...

10 degrees celcius today. Right now at 10pm its 12 degrees. Same thing tonight. It pours hard at night. Socked right in during the day. Winds from the South again tonight. I also put a trail camera with infared no flash to watch those busy little critters. I want to see how long they are up for at night. They are sleeping during the day and sneaking at night. They have gone opposite from there nature or else just figuring better grab at night while they can. I'm letting them keep what they took. I got fresh today. Little buggers.

You might want to check out a novel called "Friends of the Earth" by T.C. Boyle. It starts out with a scenario much like you are describing. Your prose even reminds me of his, which coming from me is HIGH praise. :)

It's set in 2024, Los Angeles drowning in flood waters, roofs blowing off houses, a wealthy pop star's zoo holding the world's last wild animals constantly beseiged by the weather ...

It's a dark dark view of the future.

It sounds to me like you are good to the squirrels, perhaps they are storing food away for you! I have three squirrels living in my yard that I raised in the house all last winter and released this spring. I fill a box with peanuts twice a day and they bury them all over the yard. I would have thought they would take them to their nest? I am hoping they are okay this winter,I would love to let them in the house but they chew the shit out of everything!
I love squirrels, thank you for being good to them!

My first thought also - that maybe those critters are looking out for YOU. They prolly don't know that we GLPers are usually prepared, and stash plenty of food. LOL

Wouldn't it be crazy if (when winter comes) you start finding veggie gifts at your door ????

I can see that you have a kind heart - the critters prolly know it too. hf
