They don't have to offer those rooms for rent at all. People who choose to live on the edge of an ocean have to expect that life is going to suck sometimes. This. Why can't more people understand that?! It boggles my mind. We don't always choose where we live. One could say the same about people in tornado alley, or Californians in earthquake areas, or people on the flood plains. Some people just grew up there, have jobs there, have family there, inherited a home there, etc. etc. Everybody lives somewhere. Everybody may live somewhere, but just like Californians expect that at some point there's going to be an earthquake, people in this area would have to expect that due to circumstances, things may happen there as well. |

Apartments that were $500 a month are suddenly $2000 due to the oil madness and lack of housing. I don't blame them, I'd raise my rent to meet supply and demand, but would also upgrade the apartments in the process to make their stay as wonderful as possible. We're talking swimming pools, new carpeting, anything I could cram in the fuckers with the space I had. EVERYBODY does it. People selling kindle paperwhites on ebay for whatever the free market will pay.. hey that's life man. Accept it. I remember running though Shopko to get one of the few playstation 2's they had available on launch day. People did not like that I got one since I was not in the front of the line, but they did not stop people, they just opened the doors and all hell broke loose. I could have sold that $400 or whatever it cost system on ebay for $1000. I was dumb not too, I hardly used it. |

Well of course something can happen anywhere, look at the earthquake that happened in Virginia last year...completely unexpected. However, some locations carry more risk than others. Someone living right next to a river or stream has to understand that they have a greater risk of flooding than someone that would live in the desert. |

I live where it regularly drops below zero in the winter. That is dangerously cold if one is stuck in the wrong place, though nowhere near the danger of living along a coast. Some day a tsunami will be generated either from an meteor impact or an earthquake that will match or exceed what happened in Japan. It's only a matter of time and will probably happen far sooner than anyone imagines. Such a tsunami could easily cover the entire southern chunk of Florida, and all the coastal cities. The death toll would be staggering. Hopefully we develop the ability to blast them into pieces before such an impact would occur. |

If I was an owner of a motel or a hotel near this situation, I would have advertised rooms for a reduced rate or even free in some cases with children. Now don’t get me wrong it’s not because I feel they should be given a free ride, but instead of gauging these people the owners of these business have missed out on capitalizing on National Free publicity do to their kindness instead of their GREED!!! Anonymous Coward User ID: 19812348 United States 11/10/2012 10:49 AM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Well let's consider if they charged what we could agree upon as "reasonable" (something the majority could afford). The renter would have a nightmare on their hands because there would be HOARDS of people with the ability to rent; it would be chaos. A thousand people showing up at your door with a hundred bucks pleading GIVE ME. Quoting: thuntstar83 You charge more because there is LESS supply and considerably MORE demand. It's the only way you could sell something in that environment. The renter may profit from the situation; however, the person renting the room is also winning considering they have a place to stay, etc. Does that sound harsh? Yes. But the alternative would be for the masses all fighting over a single room because they have a few nickles to their name. "Oh but that's why the government / an unbiased objective beneficent arbiter of hand outs should be in control." Really? I'd rather roll the dice that I could be the guy with 700 bucks. That seems more reasonable than praying to God the government gives me the hand out. I'll bet a guy with verifiable proof he has a clean comfortable apartment with power has been able to pick up plenty of bridge and tunnel chicks lately. |

Just because I do not believe in an invisible man in the sky who gives us hopes and comfort, does not mean there is such a thing as being human…and do not tell me that the innate nature of humans is to be cruel to one another; as this is simply away for those who are truly evil to somehow feel better about themselves. You are either a good person or an evil one which one you choose is on you and yes you will live with your decisions in whatever fashion it comes in.
