Re: Craigslist Ads Gouge Storm Victims: $700/Night Outrage!
People dislodged by Superstorm Sandy in New York state saw some dandy deals on Craigslist—like a 1-bedroom apartment for a "mere" $700 a night, the New York Post reports. "Escape the hurricane in a luxury 1-BR with full power and Internet," the ad read. "Stay in style and comfort until the power comes back on." If that seemed high, area hotels were renting rooms for $500 or $600 a night.

'gouging'?...hmm

that is a difficult call. It's almost like one person prepares and stocked up...and the other guy isn't...so the person that is prepared 'should' give sell his stuff to the other people that didn't prepare for it for the original price he paid...no mark up.

the hotels are 'marking up' their price due to the fact that these tards have no power. And what about those 'displaced' due to flooding, etc? well...would it make a difference if the Hotel was 300 a night instead of $500? these people that are displaced ARE NOT GOING HOME FOR MONTHS . Remember, this is the east coast...everything is outrageously expensive anyway. ...$300 a night is the norm for the city.

free market folks...anything else is OBAMANATION COMMUNISM...it's a tough world out there...make your own way and if ya freeze to death...that's a part of it...NOBODY OWES YOU A FREEBIE

North Dakota is same way due to the oil business there..and thats every day..they want thousands of dollars a month to rent a shit hole...But it is supply and demand..there is nothing else there that is worth paying that much for..just oil work.

...

+1

They are doing people a FAVOR. They don't have to offer those rooms for rent at all.

People who choose to live on the edge of an ocean have to expect that life is going to suck sometimes.

This. Why can't more people understand that?! It boggles my mind.

It's like with Katrina... anyone who's stupid enough to live BELOW sea-level, on the beach, is asking for natural punishment.

It's natural selection on a large scale.

this, they are the idiots that decided to stay, wether born or raised...they have half of a lifetime to make a decision to move...

I grew up in arkansas, moved to florida, and moved to st louis...

arkansas, no jobs, time to move..
florida, to many rednecks and flat and to much darn hot sunshine...
Moved to st louis, perfect, until the new madrid goes off...

but i decided to move away from family and build my own life, wherever i decided..Not where others/parents/family/friends thought i should live..

this is a big ass country...I know I have been to 46 states...Why choose to live in one corner the rest of your life...Make absoutly no sense...

get off your ass, grow a pair, start from nothing, take your family and get them out of harms way, very simple

About 4 weeks ago, before Sandy was close to NJ, I sent out an alert to my mailing list of friends and colleagues

I have never sent out a weather alert before, but this time it seemed merited given the possible damage of the storm

I have quite a few friends and colleagues who work from their PCs and could work anywhere, so I suggested maybe they consider leaving for a few weeks when the storm came closer

Some of them have small babies and one has an invalid spouse,

I reminded them of what happened when Gloria came through

Please, why don't you consider driving a few hours further, and camp out fo ra couple of weeks in Columbia or Charleston SC, I said

Columbia is a nice city, 70 degree weather, few crowds and all the ammenities of a state capital, including some first rate hospitals (better than quite a few in northern suburbs I might add).

Gas in SC is about $3/gallon right now

I provided the links to a couple of MicroTel type business suite hotels, one of which was only $670/month for full service with high speed internet and a business center downstairs (nevermind a pool and gym)

NO ONE took me up on my suggestion...on the contrary, I got back some truly nasty and insulting emails, full of NYC type expletives

How dare I suggest they "run away" to a "southern shithole"

That guy even accused me of "shilling" for South Carolina, as if I could get paid for making that suggestion...oh I wish I could, lol

This is one of the places I gave them a link to:

This is Columbia. I think it's one of the best kept secrets, and I stayed there for some weeks when a family member was in a hospital down there

So the punch line to this story is, I tried to help. I knew people were on a budget constraint and I offered something which would be as affordable as possible and still get their families out of harms way

However 99% of people will not leave their comfort zones, even when things get uncomfortable.  They will insult and lash out at people trying to help

So, at this point...I have to say, reluctantly that those people (the ones who are able to leave because they can work from home) are getting what they want at some level.

All I can do is watch this clusterfuck unfold .  Their choice

when my wife went back to NYC to see her sick dad, she searched high and low and the CHEAPEST hotel was $275 night for something just a step above a youth hostel with a shared bathroom

unfortunately, given the extreme price of housing to begin with, the NY area is the absolute worst case scenario for disaster survivors

there are those of us who used to live in that region who relocated precisely because we felt that level of cost of living was unsustainable - not just for us, but for most people. Employers simply reach a breaking point where they cannot afford to pay a NYC living wage any longer and will relocate to states where a lower salary buys a higher quality of life

market forces drive us...whether we like it or not

I don't know how you know this for certain.

I keep seeing heartless comments like this, and I think it's either a bot or a 12 year old. No real person would say something like this.

You need to go play online computer games and let the grownups talk.
