Half of Venice, Italy underwater
November 3, 2012 – VENICE, Italy – Venice has been hit by its highest winter floods in two years with water rising to 140cm (56in) above sea level and meteorologists are warning that heavier flooding will be the rule rather than the exception in the coming years. About half of the city is currently underwater.

Re: Half of Venice, Italy underwater
<- in Venice area, about 7 miles away from the "island" and on LAND.....

This is NOTHING UNUSUAL at this time of the year.... the ONLY thing unusual is really only the HEIGHT of the high water.

Many "normal" things are causing this such as a bit more rainwater as usual so that the rainwater cannot drain BEFORE the high tide hits. Furthermore, with the MOSE-system currently being built it appears that at its current stage of the works it does not allow the seawater to stream around the lagoon as it usually did but keeps a bunch of water "trapped" in places where it shouldn't which increases the effect of the high water levels.

WE ARE USED to this situation, nothing unusual here.... at least for the time being......

but, isn't sea level sea level?

i'm puzzled why you would think rain water, no matter HOW MUCH, would affect the level of the SEA?

This is perfectly normal for Venice. Beautiful city, my favourite place, but unfortunately being built in (quite literally 'in', not around) a lagoon means that flooding like this happens most years. Add to the fact that Venice is slowly sinking as it's foundations settle further, and the flooding will get slowly worse no matter what.

Yes, this has been getting worse and worse over the years, and unfortunately, it won't stop. So glad I had an opportunity to see it in person. Someday it will only be a story in the history books .....

Mold and mildew has to be a problem in Venice. I suspect the place smells pretty bad.

Not that good for the people over there, but nice to see the city from underwater I guess, with some diving equipment.

That's sad, I went to Venice a long time ago - very beautiful.

However, I'd rather it happen there where people have been used to water transportation than somewhere unprepared.
