Cuomo says City faces 'massive housing problem' after Sandy - Find Warming Shelters plus links to many resources here Is that not why one gets house insurance? And is the insurance company not responsible for housing them until they complete the repairs? Well, mine is anyway. Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26838915 Our insurance will pay us so much a month to find other housing until our house is put back together. I wonder if these people have the brains to even contact their insurance company. Many have probably tried contacting their insurance companies but may not have been able to get through for various reasons. Also, with no mail service they won't be getting a check from the insurance company anytime soon, unless they think to have it mailed to an address outside the storm area to someone who will endorse the check and deposit it into the insured's account at a branch of their bank. Ordinarily, homeowner's insurance doesn't pay off on damage caused by rising water if you didn't have flood insurance too, which one would not have bought if they were not in a flood plain. They pay only for damage that was initially caused by wind. Unless they can send out an inspector to determine the cause of damages a lot of cash-strapped insurance companies could likely stall on this. Cuomo says City faces 'massive housing problem' after Sandy - Find Warming Shelters plus links to many resources here Extreme Cold: A Prevention Guide to Promote Your Personal Health and Safety Hypothermia When exposed to cold temperatures, your body begins to lose heat faster than it can be produced. Prolonged exposure to cold will eventually use up your body’s stored energy. The result is hypothermia, or abnormally low body temperature. Body temperature that is too low affects the brain, making the victim unable to think clearly or move well. This makes hypothermia particularly dangerous because a person may not know it is happening and won’t be able to do anything about it. Hypothermia is most likely at very cold temperatures, but it can occur even at cool temperatures (above 40°F) if a person becomes chilled from rain, sweat, or submersion in cold water. Victims of hypothermia are often (1) elderly people with inadequate food, clothing, or heating; (2) babies sleeping in cold bedrooms; (3) people who remain outdoors for long periods—the homeless, hikers, hunters, etc.; and (4) people who drink alcohol or use illicit drugs. Recognizing Hypothermia Warnings signs of hypothermia: Adults: • shivering, exhaustion • confusion, fumbling hands • memory loss, slurred speech • drowsiness Infants: • bright red, cold skin • very low energy What to Do If you notice any of these signs, take the person’s temperature. If it is below 95°, the situation is an emergency—get medical attention immediately. If medical care is not available, begin warming the person, as follows: • Get the victim into a warm room or shelter. • If the victim has on any wet clothing, remove it. • Warm the center of the body first—chest, neck, head, and groin—using an electric blanket, if available. Or use skin-to-skin contact under loose, dry layers of blankets, clothing, towels, or sheets. • Warm beverages can help increase the body temperature, but do not give alcoholic beverages. Do not try to give beverages to an unconscious person. • After body temperature has increased, keep the person dry and wrapped in a warm blanket, including the head and neck. • Get medical attention as soon as possible. A person with severe hypothermia may be unconscious and may not seem to have a pulse or to be breathing. In this case, handle the victim gently, and get emergency assistance immediately. Even if the victim appears dead, CPR should be provided. CPR should continue while the victim is being warmed, until the victim responds or medical aid becomes available. In some cases, hypothermia victims who appear to be dead can be successfully resuscitated. Here was the reply-- "The government has taken the place of family and at a very high price to American taxpayers! Used to be if you fell on hard times, you went to family for help. If you had no family you relied on friends or church. Now, no one would think of asking family/friends/church for what they can get "for free" from the gov. This action of the gov. coming to peoples rescue has undermined the American family. Many women do not even get married because they can get more/better help from the gov. by being single. And they can get more/better help from the gov. than from their would be spouse/partner. It is all set up to tear the family apart so that they have control over the children. Put them in school at 3 so you can go back to work and they can begin their brain washing!"
