Is that not why one gets house insurance? And is the insurance company not responsible for housing them until they complete the repairs? Well, mine is anyway.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 26838915

Our insurance will pay us so much a month to find other housing until our house is put back together. I wonder if these people have the brains to even contact their insurance company.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 21778280

Many have probably tried contacting their insurance companies but may not have been able to get through for various reasons.

Also, with no mail service they won't be getting a check from the insurance company anytime soon, unless they think to have it mailed to an address outside the storm area to someone who will endorse the check and deposit it into the insured's account at a branch of their bank.

Ordinarily, homeowner's insurance doesn't pay off on damage caused by rising water if you didn't have flood insurance too, which one would not have bought if they were not in a flood plain. They pay only for damage that was initially caused by wind. Unless they can send out an inspector to determine the cause of damages a lot of cash-strapped insurance companies could likely stall on this.

Con Edison: 75 percent of customers have power restored

Con Edison says more than 727,000 customers, or more than 75 percent, who lost electricity since Hurricane Sandy have had their power restored Sunday morning.

Con Ed said approximately 210,000 customers were without electricity, out of an estimated 940,000 affected and the company expects to have the majority of those impacted by the storm restored by next weekend.

The company also said that more than 2,000 utility workers from other states have arrived to assist with power restoration. Workers from as far away as California are working in New York City and Westchester County and more than 300 additional outside utility workers are scheduled to arrive in New York Sunday.

Nice thread Koffee. If this clutters it too much, feel free to delete. Many people don't like to give money because of not knowing where it "really" goes. These are some Ohio locations that accept donations of products. There are many more, but it's a start:

Cincinnati, Ohio

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul-Cincinnati is working in conjunction with Matthew:25 Ministries to collect non-perishable food items, personal care products, cleaning supplies, baby and infant supplies, and first aid supplies. To help St. Vincent de Paul volunteers provide relief, visit www.SVDPcincinnati.org or by call 513-421-HOPE (4673).

Matthew 25: Ministries located at 11060 Kenwood Road in Blue Ash is sending an advance team later this week with an initial load of supplies to assess damage, meet with partners and set up distribution points. Matthew 25 plans to begin full service disaster relief operations early the week of November 5. For ongoing information on Matthew 25: Ministries' response to this devastating disaster, please visit their website at www.m25m.org. Donors can text CARING to 50555 to make a gift of $10. All designated funds are used for the purpose intended.

Matthew 25 also requests donations of critical first response items including non-perishable food, personal care products, cleaning supplies, paper products, baby and infant supplies and first aid items. Matthew 25: Ministries accepts cash, credit card and internet donations for ongoing disaster aid and humanitarian relief programs. More than 99% of Matthew 25: Ministries' cash and in-kind donations go toward programs.

Florence, Kentucky

Florence Freedom: Northern Kentucky's Minor League baseball team, will transform its team shop into a drop off site for local residents wanting to help with the relief efforts. Donations will begin being accepted on Monday, November 5 at 10 am.

The Freedom are teaming with Matthew 25 Ministries to help provide relief and hope to the victims who are still trying to sort through the recent disaster. Amongst the biggest needs are toiletries items. Gently used clothing and bottled water will also be accepted at the Freedom beginning next week.

Residents can drop off their donations from 10 am-4 pm, Monday-Friday inside the Bank of Kentucky Team Shop.

Extreme Cold: A Prevention Guide to Promote Your Personal Health and Safety

Hypothermia
When exposed to cold temperatures, your body begins to
lose heat faster than it can be produced. Prolonged exposure
to cold will eventually use up your body’s stored energy.

The result is hypothermia, or abnormally low body temperature.
Body temperature that is too low affects the brain,
making the victim unable to think clearly or move well.
This makes hypothermia particularly dangerous because a
person may not know it is happening and won’t be able to
do anything about it.

Hypothermia is most likely at very cold temperatures, but
it can occur even at cool temperatures (above 40°F) if a
person becomes chilled from rain, sweat, or
submersion in cold water.

Victims of hypothermia are often (1) elderly people with
inadequate food, clothing, or heating; (2) babies sleeping in
cold bedrooms; (3) people who remain outdoors for long
periods—the homeless, hikers, hunters, etc.; and (4) people
who drink alcohol or use illicit drugs.

Recognizing Hypothermia
Warnings signs of hypothermia:

Adults:
• shivering, exhaustion
• confusion, fumbling hands
• memory loss, slurred speech
• drowsiness

Infants:
• bright red, cold skin
• very low energy

What to Do
If you notice any of these signs, take the
person’s temperature. If it is below 95°,
the situation is an emergency—get
medical attention immediately.

If medical care is not available, begin warming the
person, as follows:
• Get the victim into a warm room or shelter.
• If the victim has on any wet clothing, remove it.
• Warm the center of the body first—chest, neck, head,
and groin—using an electric blanket, if available. Or use
skin-to-skin contact under loose, dry layers of blankets,
clothing, towels, or sheets.
• Warm beverages can help increase the body temperature,
but do not give alcoholic beverages. Do not try to give
beverages to an unconscious person.
• After body temperature has increased, keep
the person dry and wrapped in a warm
blanket, including the head and neck.
• Get medical attention as soon as possible.
A person with severe hypothermia may be unconscious and
may not seem to have a pulse or to be breathing. In this
case, handle the victim gently, and get emergency assistance
immediately. Even if the victim appears dead, CPR should
be provided. CPR should continue while the victim is being
warmed, until the victim responds or medical aid becomes
available. In some cases, hypothermia victims who appear
to be dead can be successfully resuscitated.

Re: Gov. Cuomo says City faces 'massive housing problem' after Sandy - Find Warming Shelters plus links to many resources here
Interesting comment I read when someone asked--Don't people have family they can fall back on?

Here was the reply--

"The government has taken the place of family and at a very high price to American taxpayers! Used to be if you fell on hard times, you went to family for help. If you had no family you relied on friends or church. Now, no one would think of asking family/friends/church for what they can get "for free" from the gov.

This action of the gov. coming to peoples rescue has undermined the American family. Many women do not even get married because they can get more/better help from the gov. by being single. And they can get more/better help from the gov. than from their would be spouse/partner.

It is all set up to tear the family apart so that they have control over the children. Put them in school at 3 so you can go back to work and they can begin their brain washing!"

Is that not why one gets house insurance? And is the insurance company not responsible for housing them until they complete the repairs? Well, mine is anyway.

They still have to find a place for you. And there's not excess housing near NYC anyway.

I had to skip out to Trader Joe's tonight before they closed at 7. I'm a regular customer there so most of the clerks know me.

One that I speak to quite a bit, asked me how I'm doing.
I answered--"I am grateful!"

He looks at me with questioning eyes. I said "I am grateful I was able to put gas in my car, so I could drive over to this store that is still open. And I will be grateful to return to my warm home that has a working refrigerator in which to keep this food I just purchased."

He knew right away what I was referring to.

I am grateful!

I have heat, a hot shower, TV to watch, my working computer, water, comfort and feel a little more secure than what many other people are experiencing right now.

And there is another storm coming.

The 18 hour body warmers are what we use in our sleeping bags to keep warm in cold weather.

This thread is really about as much as people can do.

Thanks to all who are keeping it up to date.

This is very helpful and can even be life-saving.

I hope it will get a Mega pin and be up for a couple of days.
