I used to give blood every three months or so, and donated money to them (believing their slick baloney brochures which they'd send out during their drives for donations). That is, until a friend was in the hospital and I saw what he was charged for those pints of blood, for which all I received was a cookie and a glass of orange juice.

Then came Katrina and Haiti, and all the millions in donations from warm-hearted Americans which never seemed to arrive to help the people who were desperate.......and later they just couldn't seem to figure out where all the money went...it just sort of disappeared...like my support of Red Cross.

I don't understand how hurricanes pick and choose areas, but Atlantic City wasn't hit as hard. The barrier islands got hit the hardest. Perhaps because the small ares of land are between the ocean and the bay.

Type in Atlantic City (below).....then move your mouse north along the shores of New Jersey. See Long Beach Island....divided into several small towns, Beach Haven, Surf City, etc. There is ONE way in and ONE way out of LBI.

Keep going north and see Seaside, Ortley, Lavallette, go further north to Mantoloking. See how narrow Mantoloking is? During the storm, the ocean came through two streets, and now the streets are gone, and a canal of water runs from the ocean to the bay, dividing Mantoloking now in two places.

ok if anyone can explain how the gas and water infrastructure would have gotten damaged from flooding ide like to know?? especially when its all under the water table anyway aka its under water in the ground already.... did the island sway back and forth and i didnt feel it?? was there an earthquake i didnt feel?

the only damage that could have happened to gas was at the connection to the house where the pipe comes out of the ground and goes into the house something could have floated into it and broke it but its very unlikely and all that would need to be done is go house to house find any broken ones and cap them....

they have been saying the gas lines need to be replaced within the next couple years for 4 to 6 years now and i think the gas company is just simply trying to get government to foot the bill


and yes further north there was damage to gas lines cuz houses floated away .... not to the damn infrastructure

The gas company had to flush the entire system with WATER. Get it. THey put water into gas lines to flush out all gas so there wouldn't be any leaks. It was a last resort to save lives but in doing so they destroyed the hundreds of miles of lines right up to the homes.

As you know, there is one way in and one way out of LBI....over ONE bridge. They are still cleaning up the sand, power lines are down, and there were gas leaks. If they let everyone back to their homes, can you imagine the traffic and disruption to workers there who are trying to make repairs?

Residents with damaged homes will be bringing in contractors
with trucks, etc., creating more traffic and disruptions.

at least the cots are clean?

If you cannot get to your house or job because of the storm
you are a STORM VICTIM.
Keep repeating it to Red Cross or any other organization who says they are trying to help victims.

There is an Organization called Samaritan's Purse which
is helping victims.Try contacting them by phone to see exactly where they are.
Where are your neighbors? What are other people doing who can't get back to their homes. If you are not self employed
can your employer help you out ?

Haven't read the whole thread yet, but I lived in South Florida during Hurricanes Charley, Jeanne, 4 in a row. They also blocked people from their homes and TASERED A MAN IN FRONT OF HIS CHILDREN when he tried to go get his dog that they had left. All the people who left pets, those pets died of starvation. It was under the pretense of "preventing looting" and "ensuring that the area was safe" but it was total bullshit, everything was fine.

During that time a 150-year-old oak tree fell on our garage and the property ins refused to pay because "FEMA would take care of it." FEMA sent us paperwork assuring they would send work crews to remove the tree and cash to have our garage fixed. For 2-3 YEARS after these hurricanes, people in Ft. Myers and Punta Gorda still had blue tarps on their roofs and over damaged restaurants, etc. Not a single person I knew ever got a dime from FEMA. FEMA pulled out after a couple months, left a toll-free number which was disconnected. Finally my husband and his friends rented a chainsaw and removed our damaged trees and we had to get a loan from my father-in-law to fix the garage -- ourselves, half-assed and cheaply.

I believe FEMA is a cover for the insurance companies to they can get out of paying any damages. I would never ever evacuate again, and certainly would never leave a pet or ever plan to see my home again if I had to, for example a fire or tornado left me no option.

When the wave hit the Philipines years ago. People who lived and fished on beaches were moved. After the storm they weren't allowed to return. Big hotels now line the beach front.
