Truck appeared to crash into gates - Armed siege at Hoyts cinema
Truck appeared to crash into gates
November 5, 2012

THE driver of a truck involved in Saturday's horrific collision with a train in Dandenong appears to have smashed straight through level crossing boom gates

(KAfknBOOOOOOOOM)

The 69-year-old truck driver...walked away unhurt, but the crash left a 43-year-old Cranbourne man on board the train dead - the first death of a passenger on Melbourne's electrified rail system in decades.

Mr King's wife is also a driver for Metro but is on maternity leave, and his brother is a Metro driver as well.

Thirty passengers were on the train, and the crash sent 12 of them and the driver to hospital.

It all but destroyed half of a six-carriage train, and left three more trains marooned in rail yards at Cranbourne, unable to travel to the city for at least five days while Metro repairs damaged track and the crossing.

Armed siege at Hoyts cinema as police shut down shopping centre
November 5, 2012 - 10:15AM

A siege is under way at a shopping centre in a suburb of Wollongong, after two armed men broke into a cinema.

Police said officers were called to the Westfield Shopping Centre on the corner of Cowper and King Streets, Warrawong, about 6.10am, after security guards reported two men had entered the Hoyts cinema

Witnesses reported seeing teams of heavily armed police entering the shopping centre after 6am, the Illawarra Mercury reported.

Lake Illawarra police Sergeant Jason Harrison said police did not believe the gunmen had any hostages.

A witness at the shopping centre, Simon Davie, said traffic was blocked as far away as six kilometres from the shopping centre.
