Re: Reagan trailed Carter in most polls in 1980
Some context for 1980 from a Shill.

There was only one debate between Carter and Reagan and it was less than a week before the election. Reagan out preformed Carter by a wide margin. He cleaned Carter's clock, and it was especially powerful because everyone expected Reagan to lose.

There were also a lot fewer pollsters in 1980 than today. We have more polling data than ever before.

Also, despite Republicans wishful thinking, Romney is no Ronald Reagan. And Obama is no Jimmy Carter. Romney doesn't have that ability to connect with people like Reagan did. If he did, this race would have been over long ago. Romney has no businesses losing this election, but if he does (and unless most of the polls are wrong he will) it will be because he was such an awful candidate.

This election is a lot more like 2004 than 1980. An unpopular incumbent who has no business winning facing an incredibly weak challenger.

Could all the polls end up being wrong? Sure. Anything is possible.

But it is very unlikely.
 Quoting: SkepticalWordSmith

Did you NOT read the original post??? "Romney doesn't have that ability to connect with people like Reagan did....if he did, this race would have been over long ago...." If Reagan had so much "connectivity" with the voters, WHY DID THE POLLS HAVE HIM LOSING JUST A WEEK BEFORE?!?!?!?!

Quit your wishful thinking, and face the facts.

And for the record, *I* think Romney is sounding more "Reagan-esque" every time I hear him (the closer it gets to election day).
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25676821

The Polls had him losing because the Carter campaign had painted a picture of him as an idiotic cowboy. An image he was able to shake off in the debate when he famously asked, "Are you better off today then you were four years ago?" People listening to that debate felt Reagan really got them on an emotional level. The only people who think that of Romney are right wing partisans.

And if I was falling victim to wishful thinking, I'd be saying Gary Johnson was going to win. That is my wish.

You all seem to forget that John Anderson got 6% of the vote that year, mostly at Carter's expense. I don't think Gary Johnson is taking votes away from Obama.

Reagan was far more partisan and into talking about how crappy liberals were compared with conservatives. Romney -- rightly or wrongly -- has traditionally shied away from that type of talk. So, if anything, Reagan's way of presenting issues might have made moderates or independents more apprehensive.

By the same token, Romney's unwillingness to loudly trash libs makes him in the eyes of some conservatives a less sure thing. But they know that with Obama, they're getting pure, unadulterated leftwing garbage.

I disagree. No real way to prove either of us right or wrong on this one since it is more opinion than fact.

But I think people respect someone who boldly stands by their convictions rather than changing their opinions to fit their audience. I think that is why Bush was able to beat Kerry. People did not like Bush but they knew what they were getting and that he stood by his convictions, right or wrong. Where as Kerry, like Romney, just said whatever he needed to say to win whatever election he was in. Obama, for all his many, many, MANY, flaws, does tend to stand his ground. And people respect that.

Bullshit to that, because if Obama were a conservative, you or any libs who supposedly "respect that" would shy away from him. Or the complaint would be that he was too extreme, heartless and a warmonger, or some crap like that.

And if you look at the drone war in Pakistan, Yemen and Somalia... he is a warmonger.

Re: Reagan trailed Carter in most polls in 1980
Lets see !!! When Carter was in office the Middle East was in turmoil. The Soviets had invaded Afghanistan , not because America couldnt stop them , but because Carter was too weak to try. (google Charlie Wilson) Their were Hostages being held by the Iranian Revoulutionary Guard an ambassador had died in the line of duty !!! Oh and the economy was in the shitter too !!! 19 and 20% interest rates at the banks not on credit cards!!!

Lets see !!! Regan takes office. The hostages are released and leave Iranian airspace while Regan gives his inaugural address. The economy picks up at a brisk pace rates drop at the banks, and people get back to work . The Middle East begins to cool down except for Lybia which is dealt with some time later in the first term. The Soviets suffer such huge and humiliating losses the War in Afghanistan drains their econmy ,and they pull out.

Lets See !!! Obama is in office , the Middle East is in turmoil . Ambassador Chris Stevens and others including two Navy Seals Died in the line of duty, and were denied the help needed to save their lives. Egypt,Lybia , and soon Syria will have fallen to the Muslim Brotherhood (Alqaeda in DRAG).

Lets See !!! Romney in office: We dont know what will happen , but I know whats coming if Obama is elected to a second term, The same thing that would have happened if Carter had recieved a second term. More of the same more joblessnes more on welfare more forclosures more families on the streets. I myself have decided to try Romney.

The best way to "steal" an election is to hit the opponent hard in the last week before the election. I think this is what has happened here. Romney just cock-punched Oblabla so hard his that his entire home country of Kenya felt it.

But if libtards are concerned about Romney not being predictably rightwing, then they're full of shit. I can accept that unhappiness coming from Republicans, but not Democrats. In effect, libs want a 100% guaranteed super-duper libtard and anything less will not do. And that includes a conservative Reagan or an unpredictable (or Reagan Lite) Romney.

I didn't see white trash in this video, so what are you saying? People who talk about "my tax dollars" are probably working, I would assume. Yes, some of these folks had the "talking points" memorized, but did not seem trashy or violent. I did get a laugh out of the Buddhists comment though. Oops.

Romney in a landslide. It won't even be close. I don't know what the media's angle is here other than trying to mobilize the democrat base, but it's been over for several months.

The Romney wave and the disgust most Americans have for the democrats is just to much to bear for Obama.

We had enough if his policies in 2010, and if you remember it was a landslide election for Republicans, and it has grown even bigger since then.

Re: Reagan trailed Carter in most polls in 1980
The polls showed the race as very close. Reagan trailed Carter in most polls, and even the final Gallup poll showed Reagan just 3 points ahead. But he actually won by 10. Could the race have been decided in the hectic final week?

Mitofsky reports that, after the election, CBS News and the New York Times re-interviewed the respondents they had surveyed in the final pre-election poll and found that “approximately one person in seven said they did something different than what they had said just prior to the election.” Not only did Carter lose the remaining undecided voters in that final week, but some of his supporters lost faith in him and switched sides.

I see some now have obama and Romney tied...., but Romney seems to be leading in more toss-up's and states that were solid blue last election.... So one of two things could be happening (the first one I don't quite buy).

1) Romney wins electoral vote and obama wins popular vote (from what I hear, obama is not too popular anymore).

2) the poll takers are trying to encourage dem voters to get out the vote (by favoring obama)... Did you know that Rasmussen is a democrate, Gallop has been threatened with lawsuits into the next century by axelrooood, ABC is marxist????? This could be a better explanation for the polls

University of Colorado Professors Ken Bickers and Michael Berry have developed a model based on state-level economic data that predicts Mitt Romney winning with 330 electoral votes. They have applied this model successfully to every presidential race since 1980. It does not shift around with the polls; in fact it does not use them at all.

The religion of submission cannot survive an open and honest discussion of its convoluted and foolish scriptures, its sexually perverted terrorist prophet, or its deceitful and demented god. When Western leaders become unified and resolute in their hostility to Islam's violent and ungodly beginnings, Muslims will flee the religion because they will be horrified by its endorsement of terrorism, mass murder, slave trading, plunder, kidnapping, and rape.

If Muslims & their apologists really want to cure "Islamophobia," here is an easy way. Focus their indignation on Muslims committing violent acts in the name of Islam, not on non-Muslims reporting on those acts.
