You are looking at it wrong. When someone passes, the family has the ability to order as many copies of the death certificates as they want. Usually the family needs them to take care of the deceased persons financial responsibilities. When my mother in law passed, we order 10. We could not even have her utilities turned off without it.

You are correct. We did the same. People who believe 1 death = 1 death certificate obviously have not been through the process of wrapping up someone's affairs. Actually if, you take a average of 5 certificated ordered per death, the number actually seems low.

Move along, nothing to see here.

When my husband died, I got 10 copies of the death certificate. Most people order more than that. You must mail out these copies to various banks, insurance companies, etc in finalizing the person's stuff and closing accounts and all of that.

Most people order at least 10 to 20 as recommended.

Licensed funeral director here...

I can see why the number of death dertificates ordered seems like a large number, but as others have posted, each death can require as many as 20 or more death certificates in order to close out bank accounts and to satisfy life insurance requirements which all require an original certificate.

Now, on with your death certificate doom.

just your tax dollars at work....ever heard of "lowest bidder"....most states have a law in place for getting the best deal for your/their tax dollars

government agencies have to "by law" solicit the lowest bid on buying products over certain amount, at the school dist I work for it's $5000

we buy "large" amounts of things all the time....just the other day we got 14 tractor trailers full of paper hand towels and 20 full of toilet paper....and this is just for the upcoming quarter

sorry, no conspiracy here

You're almost right, there.

Usually when someone passes, the funeral director in charge of the person's business will give the family 5 DC's (death certs), for reasons such as that. Bills, lawyers, etc. You don't "order" them, but it is true that you can obtain extras for whatever the case may be, at a set price.

Being that I'm in the business, I don't know what to make of all these cert orders. Could be business as usual, could not. All I know is I really think something shitty is going to happen in LA, but we all have to wait and see.

If there were to be an event of large magnitude there would be no state goverment that would have time to issue these DC's to the families. My guess is they are not worried about documentation as much as disposal of the dead.

I always thought when you get extras...birth/death/marriage that they were certified COPIES.
