The shadow on the Moon is from the Moon itself. It is it lit by the sun and the shadowed area is simply the unlit part of the moon. I guarantee that if you had continued to watch the Moon throughout its time in the sky you would have seen it appear to rotate clockwise until it was "upright" when highest in the sky and tilted to the right when setting. I guarantee also that when you saw it rising that someone on the opposite side of the world could have seen it setting at the same time and tilted the opposite direction. That is only possible with field rotation.

The shadow on the Moon is not *from* the moon itself! Sure it appears on the moon, but its not *from* the moon, its the earth getting in between the moon and the sun. Surely you must know that?!

Really? You think the shadow is from the Earth? Really? The ONLY time the Moon has a shadow on it from the Earth is during a lunar eclipse. The phase on the Moon is NOT and NEVER HAS BEEN from the Earth getting in between the moon and the sun.

as i understand things, you are right, but this IS a very common misconception, most people would say it's the earth's shadow that casts the dark part on the moon.

also with the above quote, the way you worded it "the shadow on the moon is from the moon" is a little confusing like you suggested the moon casts it's own shadow on itself.. where what you're saying is that nothing casts a shadow on the moon... it's sitting in the dark.. and the light part is the sun shining on the rock in the dark

Which is why I also said the shadowed part was simply the unlit part of the moon.
