Wow, that's quite the compliment on both counts, compliments of which I'm not deserving. It doesn't take Dr. Astro or a paycheck to see that you're the one who's full of shit!

Again, thanks for the compliment. The language of astronomy is the same.

No, that's the language of winners, like me. Thanks!

well it's daylight here, the moon is out, and is waning from the bottom, totally opposite of what it was 2 nights ago.

i suppose this is normal too?

Yes. It's field rotation.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 17989851

yeah, it is setting now. When it was seen before and had the shadow on the top it was rising. I guarantee 10-12 hours ago if you had seen it rising it would have been on the top.

I noticed the moon looking extremely unusual last night rising in the east in the UK on a very clear night.

1. It was the yellowiest I've ever noticed it.

2. If the moon were a clockface, then between about 5.35 to 6.10 was in shadow, making the moon look like a wedge of sorts, there were no clouds obscuring the view to make it appear this way.

3. I don't think it's the moon that not right. More a case of the object(s) that is casting a shadow on the face of the moon. Some upcoming doom for thought.

The shadow on the Moon is from the Moon itself. It is it lit by the sun and the shadowed area is simply the unlit part of the moon. I guarantee that if you had continued to watch the Moon throughout its time in the sky you would have seen it appear to rotate clockwise until it was "upright" when highest in the sky and tilted to the right when setting. I guarantee also that when you saw it rising that someone on the opposite side of the world could have seen it setting at the same time and tilted the opposite direction. That is only possible with field rotation.

trying to imagine how the whole rotation thing actually works out and how the bright side of the moon can be away from the sun, etc, all of it, makes my head spin and makes no sense to me. the vedics believed that the earth doesn't rotate, and that a black planet/twin moon crossing in front of the moon caused it's cycles. not sayin i believe either but the vedics did have a whole bunch right as far as astronomy and predicting eclipses and the like goes.

i'm not really arguing anything, except the fact that i have always been fascinated by the moon an the stars and have spent a lot of time looking at the sky in my life, and the last few years, and last weeks especially, everything seems really off to me. by my unscientific observations and gut feelings when i look up at night

can any of you astronomytards maybe help dig up like, a 3d model of how the moon orbits the earth? or one with the earth/moon in relation to the sun as well, demonstrating how the shadow on the moon is cast (or the bright side lit up if that's the case?) i can only find like, flat 2D ones that show it as being totally planar. surely if there is so much variation it can't be totally planar, right? like does it go around in a wobble or a cloud (like a diagram of electrons around a nucleus in an atom)

sorry if this sounds retarded, like i said, trying to imagine how it works in 3d space boggles my noggin

Oh. My. God. This thread just reached a new level of stupid. No you fucking moron, it's the night side of the moon, it's from the moon itself. When the earth gets in between the moon and sun it's called a lunar eclipse. Those only happen during a full moon, and do not even happen every month.

You moontards are fucking clueless!

There is an intricate interplay of the moon's inclination, orbital period, and the earth's orbital period and tilt (there are also other factors like the eccentricity of the moon's orbit that are also important for how we see the moon as well). The above should help you visualize how it all works, you can view the sun, earth, and moon in 3d from any perspective you need to understand it.

as i understand things, you are right, but this IS a very common misconception, most people would say it's the earth's shadow that casts the dark part on the moon.

also with the above quote, the way you worded it "the shadow on the moon is from the moon" is a little confusing like you suggested the moon casts it's own shadow on itself.. where what you're saying is that nothing casts a shadow on the moon... it's sitting in the dark.. and the light part is the sun shining on the rock in the dark

Re: Moontard here: THE friggin MOON is NOT RIGHT!
Don't freak out. Look, just use the moon to locate the sun and all will be fine when you figure out the relationship between the two and your position as an observer at a third position.

The line demarcating the illuminated moon from the dark side of the moon - the terminator - can be used to help point the way to the sun. Find the apex of the arc of the moon on the visible dark side of the moon - the point farthest from the terminator line to the edge of the dark side of the moon. Draw a line perpendicular to the terminator across the moon from the apex we originally identified all the way across the lit side of the moon. Pretend that is an arrow pointing toward the sun in the direction from the dark side of the moon to the lit side of the moon.

Now, did you pay attention where the sun went down on the horizon? Did you trace the path of the sun across the sky so you can imagine where it is behind the earth at the time you draw the imaginary arrow on the moon? If the arrow points toward the sun, then all is well. If it doesn't, then something really bad happened and you are either dead or about to die due to some astrological abnormality.

The whole thing is off. Nothing seems right. The Sun. The MOON. All the Fireballs. Jupitors atmosphere. Some of the stars showing seem like they just arrived lately.

All the websites get their material from the same source. The Government and they all say normal. I call bullshit on the whole adventure out there.

I have never seen the moon wane from the top down either.

I posted this morning about the incredible halo around it last night. My dad worked in the woods and always watched the moon etc.. for weather signs, and a halo meant that a storm was coming. I'm from Oregon and I've never seen anything like this particular halo. Guess what, we didn't have a storm or any clouds at all to make this halo appear. I also noticed and thought to myself, cause I could be nuts you know, that it is waning from the top down. That I didn't think was normal either. I tried to take a picture of the halo but had no sucess. It was rainbow colored nearest the moon then was the deepest blue and then a huge rainbow color around the outside of the ring and it was HUGE. I oould see every color of the rainbow.hiding

It is precisely because it is fashionable for Americans to know no science, even though they may be well educated otherwise, that they so easily fall prey to nonsense. They thus become part of the armies of the night, the purveyors of nitwittery, the retailers of intellectual junk food, the feeders on mental cardboard, for their ignorance keeps them from distinguishing nectar from sewage. — Isaac Asimov

that can differ the moon goes around the earth in 29.something days and that is why it changes, but also it has not the same orbit so sometimes it goes in front the sun on the 29day when it goes either under the galactic plane or above it.. so it changes a lot, you go look at some moon simulation program and see if it match ! :)

Re: Moontard here: THE friggin MOON is NOT RIGHT!
It is 10.16am here in New Zealand. I am looking at the moon and the sun, they are near each other in the daytime sky.

i have read the following info on various sites:

"If the Sun and the Moon are in the daytime sky together, then the moon has to be in a crescent or quarter phase. For this to occur, Moon has to be more or less between Sun and Earth. In that instance we can only see relatively small portion of its lit surface and most of it is unlit."

But the moon looks larger than a quarter, and it is sitting on a funny angle, a bit like this:

Hey, that is not the shape i drew with the crosses!

I drew a shape that was a half moon, on a funny tilted angle, with the visible/white part at the top.

Do you mean you are looking at the moon right now too???

How can we both be looking at the moon, coz as you say, we are on opposite sides of the earth.

What time of the day is it where you are?

It is now 10.52am here.

Also, could someone explain why the diagram i made with crosses is changed when i post it, i have seen other posters make diagrams with crosses, and theirs have obviously posted correctly...

The shills always show up for the first page. I swear they have alarms on their computors. The kid with the gas can or Hydra shows up in an instant.

Keep your heads up and looking up.bumphf

Do a thread search. They usually say something like "the moon is sideways" or some such.
It's good to be open-minded, just don't let your brain fall out.
