New Yorker on Sandy
So guys I live on Long Islands north shore and finally got my power back after 6 days, Watching the news is making me sad because very little is being broadcast about the damage here. MSM is concentrating on NYC and NJ yet Long Island NY had the highest reported wind gusts and some of the most intense damage. The barrier islands were breached in multiple place entire towns were wiped out. Towns like Mastic, Babylon, and Lindenhurst were completely under water. Entire blocks of homes burnt down and not just in breezy point and the rockaways. The town of long beach is under martial law because it is wiped out no power, sewage, water, gas it is one of the few areas where looting is taking place. They have cars buried in sand dunes more than 5 feet high. All of this damage it very little of it being covered. The power guys can be bitched at all they want but they are working their a$$es off and have been doing an awesome job. Long Island had more than 1,000,000 people with out power and now it is only about 200,000. Please keep us in you prayers and push to get us the help we need.

Re: New Yorker on Sandy
It's good to hear a first hand account. You're right..the media isn't reporting squat. I've just heard what's actually going on from friends who have family there. I tried telling my mom that things were worse than they are reporting and she chewed me out saying I was buying into the media hype. Umm....

One positive thing I've seen is requests on Facebook for individual families. If you can get a hold of friends in other areas with lists for individual family needs I bet you can get more help than what will just be sent to you.

Re: New Yorker on Sandy
thanks for the response yes please check out the facebook threads and help out anyone you can. FEMA is doing a lot through their DRC's but they are only in nassau county which is weird since it represents less than half of the island. One of the other big problems is the gas issue there is no gas here on LI people are waiting 2 -3 hours to get gas and the stations sometimes run out before they get it. I know they are talking about jersey but they will have it before us. I am an EMT so I was able to skip the line because they are making sure fire ems hospital workers cops etc are mobile if needed but my wife was on empty and had to sit 2 1/2 hours with the kids in the car just so shed be able to go food shopping and to work. My neighborhood fared well lots of trees and power is still out for many after 6 days but the south shore is decimated.

Brother I beg you if you have the ability GET OUT OF THERE.

It's going to get MUCH WORSE. There is a deep deep cold coming...and many people are predicting a massive earthquake that will cause a tsunami on the East Coast.

Either way, the east coast is gone. That's why FEMA isn't even helping. They are waiting for it to get wiped out completely and don't want to waste their money.

Re: New Yorker on Sandy
one thing I can say is that there has been limited looting. At this point in New Orleans even the cops were looting. It really shows the difference in the type of people out there. The rockaways and long beach are having problems but thats about it and it isn't wide spread just here and there. People on long beach who shouldnt even be staying there with no heat, water, sewage, electric etc are hanging signs that say I am home and I am armed.

Re: New Yorker on Sandy
The only earthquake forecasts I've heard recently are the 104 hour warning for LA and the possibility of a quake because of small ones in the area as result of sandy. Unless cumbre vieja goes off of course. I am prepped and have a network of friends here ready to roll if need be. If I have to leav in a rush boats are easy to come by and I have places in CT and upstate NY where I can crash on my way out.

Re: New Yorker on Sandy
My husband grew up in Far Rockaway, we have friends down there. One of them has a teen daughter, a mentally ill Mom and an 90 some year old grandma. I spoke to her on Thursday and haven't been able to get back to her. I offered her to come stay upstate with us and she said she would if she could find enough gas to get out.

I grew up in a sleepy little town in England, although my husband has told me stories about the Rockaways, I feel awful being all warm and cosy and fed whilst they are there suffering. I want to get hold of her and offer to meet her somewhere on the outskirts of the city with gas. I cannot imagine the fear and worry she must be feeling. Good luck to you all and I will keep spreading the word to get help to you guys.
