Here is just one example of how it can all go wrong, from a recent gas shortage scare:

"Panic at the pumps: Mum fights for her life after setting fire to herself pouring petrol in home because daughter had run out of fuel"

What is a stabiliser? Will it stop the expansion of the gas, while being stored?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7554855

Gasoline is a liquid, liquids neither compress nor expand (thermal expansion coefficient is VERY low) due to temperature changes.

A stabilizer is a product that when added to fuel will allow a longer term of storage prior to the fuel breaking down.

One has nothing to do with the other.
 Quoting: Sledster

This past summer, I purchased 2 small plastic gas cans & filled them with gasoline. I stored outside by a hedge & covered them lightly with a tarp. After a few months went by I went to check on them & they were both swollen. I opened the caps slowly to release the gases & dumped the gasoline into my car. So lesson learned. How the can we store gasoline safely with this happening.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7554855

I assume you want to power a generator.
Use propane. Enormous shelf life.
 Quoting: Kirk

no, I don't have a generator. I was merely being pro-active in having some emergency gas on hand for my car, in case of an emergency & I need to get out of dodge quick. So whats the reason then that the gas can expanded? Is it 100% unsafe then to store gasoline?

That guy is stupid for using 5 gallon buckets to store gas. He shouldnt be arrested though. Gas taken from him until he can store it properly, but not arrested.
 Quoting: 284dan

No where in the article does it say that he was going to "store it". He was bringing it back for his neighbors. If the authorities were on the "ball" & doing their job, then this man would not have had to resort to doing this. Also, why did not the cop give an escort to the man so he could deliver the gas safely. This sad story just highlights the insurmountable problems these people are facing, & the lacksadasical attitude of the authorities.

Dammed if you do & dammed if you don't. A neighbor who was being a hero gets fined. People who were trying to help themselves get to go without gas. What a world we now live in. Makes me sick.

From the article:

The gas was returned to underground storage tanks, police said.

Wonder where the gas actually went...back to the original store, to a tank in the area....or somewhere else?

The gas was paid for, why not at least transport it safely to where it was to be intended for the friends and family who needed it?

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7554855

Well, it's not the liquid fuel that expands.
The liquid fuel will vaporize when warm and the pressure comes from having a certain amount of empty headspace above the fuel where the vapors collect.

These vapors are what create the pressure in the can, not the liquid fuel itself.

Remove as much headspace as you can and the fuel cannot vaporize enough to increase the pressure in the container.

Simple physics.

No it is safe to store gas, but the chemistry of todays fuels dont allow for long-term storage. You should rotate out gasoline about once every 3 months or so. Because in the US we add Ethanol to our fuel, the ethanol will absorb water into the fuel and 10% of the total volume of fuel will essentially be useless. Any modern blend of gasoline will break down after about 6 months to a year and varnish will appear on the container. Not much to do about that.

If you have to store fuel, Propane, Diesel, or LNG are better choices.

Why was the local gas stations not being topped up to keep the locals supplied? Why have the authorities let things get so bad, that residents are forced to take risky chances like this man did? Let point the blame where it belongs, on the useless authorities.

Gasoline is a blend of refined oils designed to break down in a short period of time. Therefore it is not suitable for longterm storage. If you have the resources, setting up a propane system is more practicable. Lacking that try to setup your survival using non powered technology like that used by your grandparents. Where you have access to cheap fuel like wood or coal, the steam engine is the best choice for heating and power. Learn to process your own food for storage, dehydrate, pressure canning, vacuum packing. If you can only afford one thing then dry pack corn for longterm storage. Learn how to cook and bake with it. Of course clean water is a given for surviving more than a few days. Plan on moving away from high risk areas. One of the things I have noticed with many of the Sandy survivors is that they are just sitting around waiting for someone else to put their lives back in order. A community that is self sufficient does not need the government.

Search for the title before posting... I'm sure there will be several more of this post today and tomorrow.

The man and gas station owner were arrested for using 5 gallon paint buckets. Look at the picture of 30 buckets stacked in the van with the lids coming off.

It could be deadly to more than the van driver, k.

I could give two shits about other threads, most good stories get lost forever here, so having the same topic posted more than once is the only way shit gets pinned that is important.

And yeah, we know he broke the law, but it just shows you how fucking desperate these people are.

And this bullshit about the lids expanding, that is complete bullshit, its all fucking plastic.

My plastic gas cans don't expand do yours?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8950

the problem is transport. 150 gallons of gas in plastic buckets could torch a whole intersection and everyone in it.
 Quoting: Kirk

A better solution would have been to use 3 or 4 industrial steel 55 gallon drums. Pumps are available cheaply from Harbor freight. They would easily go in a PU truck or van, though an SUV is more difficult. I have modified 5 gallon plastic "approved" containers to vent safely, as I won't stand for the stupid EPA trying to violate the laws of physics.

In the great US of A, you get arrested for trying to help out your neighbors.

The state doesn't want you to think or act on your own, therefore you are arrested for circumventing the states "disaster" recovery aparatus.

Imagine what 5 gallons of gas would have done to help all those people surive a little longer.

Disgusting:

[link to www.nbcconnecticut.com]

Police arrested a 47-year-old New York man accused of filling up 30 five-gallon Home Depot buckets with gasoline on Saturday night.

According to investigators, Yunus Latif, of Richmond Hill, collected money from his neighbors, bought gas at a Valero station almost 80 miles away in Orange and planned to bring it back to his neighborhood, where they had no power and gas.

Re: Man Arrested for "Hoarding" Gas in 5 Gallon Buckets
...

I was replying to your statement about children etc. Since cities have stict laws about wooodburning stoves, this makes it impossible for most average families or poorer families. I just spoke to my own city about this & if we live in condo's we cannot install a woodburning stove at all. Only private independent standing homes can "apply" for a permit & has to be inspected, & the fire dept. also have to be part of it. Plus, one's home insurance goes up. Again, with so much of big brother involved, it becomes financially impossible for most.

Again, you think us Americans are moronic and stupid? Of course it has to be up to code !!!!!!!! youll burn your place down if it isnt !!!!

And of course condos and apartments cant have a stove, duh ! But if one was to raise a family, of course youre expected to provide a real home for them.

and boo hoo hoo, too many hurdles to save your families life if the heat went out. Boo hoo, cant save up money no, for something that could save your life, Cant walk down or make phone calls to make sure everythings good to go, yeah, too much trouble to make a fire, only heating elements and furnace from utility company can provide us like a baby and a teat, boo hoo, cry me a river.

Wow...chill out Apollo. I was not intimating that Americans are stupid. You seem to be venting so I will drop the subject. Sorry if I offended you.

peace

Sorry bout that also, seemed like you were building up a mountain of excuses not to have a woodburning stove, or maybe that was my perception only..

I have other things going on and Im grumpy today, Im sorry.
Peace..

No worries, I know you are not normally grumpy.

Unfortunately I live in a condo, & I can't have a woodburning stove. Wish I could move to the country & have one. Its what I grew up with. But home sales have come to a halt & that keeps me stuck in cityville for now. I hope the energies clear up for you soon Apollo. Be well.

If you do store some gas. Don't forget to put stabilizer in it :)
 Quoting: Blue Skies

I think it would have taken less than a few months for this guy to drive back to the city and deliver the desperately needed fuel.

Maybe the cops should go around to everybody's house to make sure everyone has their gas stored properly. They should start putting vents in all car gas tanks also.

Bait thread.

Just sayin'
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 19876417

No, it's based on an actual news story.

Maybe it was a "bait action" by those cops or their bosses, but the story is reported on the news.

Could be black market racketing. Not personal use.
