Re: Man Arrested for "Hoarding" Gas in 5 Gallon Buckets
WOW! Cops must have nothing better to do!!!!!

Points in fact:
#1: that lid in the back of the van was opened to see what was inside by the cops who took the picture. Every other can was closed.
#2: those containers would NEVER expand enough to pop those lids. I don't care if you stored them like that for years!
#3: farmers have been pouring gas from plastic containers like that for years into generators and such
#4: Cops are a joke in this.
#5: If no other containers like the Gas can is available, this is a perfect substitute! People have been doing it for years.
#6: The gas station owner gets charged too??? WTF If someone robs his store should the gas station owner go to jail as an accomplice as well? Well should he?

What a useless system we have in place for our law enforcement when they can charge and arrest anyone for anything because there are way to many laws in place for them to do so. Whatever happened to freedom.

As for the terrorist aspect of this. Get your heads out of your own asses and out of other peoples. As if a van full of 4 gallon gas containers is going to do anything much. You don't need gas containers to light fires. Any judge worth his weight in awesomeness should throw this out and ask the officers why they are wasting his time! Then put the officers on probation and force them to go to some classes on ethics and humanism.

And if Humanism isn't a course....F you, it should be one, for everyone of these twats!

Which is more dangerous?

Freezing to death from generators not running or possibly using the wrong container for gas?

The Government is here to protect you, even if it kills you in the process.

Was it the BEST option to haul gas like that? Nope.

Was it a better option then letting your children and others face freezing nights without power. Hell yes.

Of course, since the idiots on this thread are not facing the issue, they have no right to judge what they would do, nor what others have the right to do to protect their own.

Children need to be raised in a home and to have a wood stove or pellet stove for back up heat. Its what is done in the winter in the midwest and northern and mountain states. You cant place your lives 100 percent on the utility line and the gas station.
 Quoting: APOLLO ILLUMINIST

A big part of my planning several years ago was to install a small Jotul stove at my retreat location to supplement the oil furnace.

Having a wood stove is as important as water and food.

I have also amassed large stores of green and dried cord wood, practically hidden from view.

The stove is used 75% of the time and is incredible in the amount of heat it throws off.

Having redundancy in all aspects of your overall plan is critical. The best investment I ever made was purcahsing an AMETEK DC motor off ebay, I can use that thing as a wind turbine, or hook it up to my bicycle to charge batteries, of course these are supplemented by small and very small scale solar PV systems.

I would highly discourage anyone from installing a pellet stove as most require electricity to fucntion properly.

Also, what happens when deliveries can't be made and you run out of pellets?

You are fucked.

With a wood stove you could burn your furniture if it came to that.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8950

Yes, I agree to that, Ive had both, I prefer wood all the way. In my neighborhood alone theres tons of free wood. We had a spring storm that snapped many huge limbs off the trees and people just dragged them to the roadside for disposal

Had a neighbor that hired a tree trimming service and they were going to feed it all into the chipper and I told them all to throw it over the fence into my yard, and they were happy to oblige..

Im not talking branches but good thick pieces that I cut up further and piled it up to age..

Lots of free wood, people try and give away all the time .

We installed a wood burning furnace a few years ago....28 cords of wood in the back and 7 in the basement.....My husband still thinks we need more. lol
 Quoting: Blue Skies

I highly doubt you could store even 1 cord in your basement.
 Quoting: ChvyV8Bldr

A cord of wood is 4x8 Our basement is only half the size of our house (split level). It is 28x18 and 7.5 ft ceiling. You figure it out. lol

150 gallons of gas in paint cans?

That isn't hording, that is just plain stupid, the kind of stupid that gets people killed.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23793796

There are NO gas cans available anymore! What would you do if you were in their position?

There just may come a time when you will do something similar out of need!

While I agree this wasn't the best choice I certainly don't think it amounts to a crime where more tax dollars will be spent needlessly!

Wrong.

You are twisting the story to piss people off.

He was "in violation of regulation concerning flammable or combustible liquids."

Because he put GAS inside HOME DEPOT CONTAINERS which were EXPANDING.

Not hoarding.

If they actually spent the money for proper gas containers it would have been no problem.

Don't tell me there are no gas containers, I am right outside of Boston and travel to NJ daily. I can find plenty.

So I take it you wouldn't mind at all if your neighbour had gallons of gas stored incorrectly next door!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23755636

Apparently he was not going to store it, it would have been immediately distributed to a number of people for use in generators.

Yes, they should have used proper containers --but last time I checked stores were charging more than $20 for a five gallon plastic gas can so maybe that's part of why they didn't have them to use--or at least secured the lids on the makeshiftt gas carriers.

It is appalling that storm victims are suffering from hypothermia and starvation in that area, when food, water and warmth are less than hour away. Typical FEMA incompetence or something worse?

When people are desperate they often take dangerous chances.
 Quoting: Ralph--a house dog

I am in this general area, in fact smack in the middle between Orange County and NYC.

As of last week, no gas cans were available for sale. Nowhere. According to Home Depot they were sold out on the entire east coast. You can get a generator but not a gas can.

I have some of those paint buckets but they are used, not sure if they're clean enough to use as extra gas cans. I only have enough actual gas cans for one day's worth of fuel, so I am refilling every day, and I'd rather have 2 days worth at home, seems we'll be out of power a while longer.

Gasoline is a hazardous material. There are federal regulations for it's safe transport and storage. I was a firefighter for 30 years and fully appreciate the regulations governing the handling of it. That man and the service station that allowed him to fill those buckets were endangering the public.

In the great US of A, you get arrested for trying to help out your neighbors.

The state doesn't want you to think or act on your own, therefore you are arrested for circumventing the states "disaster" recovery aparatus.

Imagine what 5 gallons of gas would have done to help all those people surive a little longer.

Disgusting:

[link to www.nbcconnecticut.com]

Police arrested a 47-year-old New York man accused of filling up 30 five-gallon Home Depot buckets with gasoline on Saturday night.

According to investigators, Yunus Latif, of Richmond Hill, collected money from his neighbors, bought gas at a Valero station almost 80 miles away in Orange and planned to bring it back to his neighborhood, where they had no power and gas.

Home depot buckets do not.
