I would highly discourage anyone from installing a pellet stove as most require electricity to fucntion properly.

Also, what happens when deliveries can't be made and you run out of pellets?

You are fucked.

With a wood stove you could burn your furniture if it came to that.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8950

We installed a wood burning furnace a few years ago....28 cords of wood in the back and 7 in the basement.....My husband still thinks we need more. lol
 Quoting: Blue Skies

I highly doubt you could store even 1 cord in your basement.
 Quoting: ChvyV8Bldr

Are you dumb? A chord of wood is only 4x4x8 in feet. 4 foot wide, 4 foot high and 8 foot long. Easily stored in a basement.
I am not the poster you responded to, but I had to chime in on another Urban Dweller trying to act smart.

I could fit a chord of wood in my walk in closet and still have 2 ft walking room on the side and 4 feet above.

Learn a little before speaking.

Search for the title before posting... I'm sure there will be several more of this post today and tomorrow.

The man and gas station owner were arrested for using 5 gallon paint buckets. Look at the picture of 30 buckets stacked in the van with the lids coming off.

It could be deadly to more than the van driver, k.
 Quoting: Giftedest

I could give two shits about other threads, most good stories get lost forever here, so having the same topic posted more than once is the only way shit gets pinned that is important.

And yeah, we know he broke the law, but it just shows you how fucking desperate these people are.

And this bullshit about the lids expanding, that is complete bullshit, its all fucking plastic.

My plastic gas cans don't expand do yours?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8950

the problem is transport. 150 gallons of gas in plastic buckets could torch a whole intersection and everyone in it.

Which is more dangerous?

Freezing to death from generators not running or possibly using the wrong container for gas?

The Government is here to protect you, even if it kills you in the process.

Was it the BEST option to haul gas like that? Nope.

Was it a better option then letting your children and others face freezing nights without power. Hell yes.

Of course, since the idiots on this thread are not facing the issue, they have no right to judge what they would do, nor what others have the right to do to protect their own.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 20901334

Children need to be raised in a home and to have a wood stove or pellet stove for back up heat. Its what is done in the winter in the midwest and northern and mountain states. You cant place your lives 100 percent on the utility line and the gas station.

Personally I have a beef with the Lame Stream Media and the way they report. The headline was totally wrong. The headline doesn't match the story. Should be "men arrested for transporting gas in unapproved containers".

And with that said, if he could go that far to get the gas, he should have been able to get the containers. I would rather have less gas and get home alive with it, than to take the risk that he took for himself, everyone at the station, and everyone on the highway between the gas station and home.

I don't know if you are aware, but in most cities now, it is illegal to have an open fireplace & burning wood, coal. Where I live, only "natural gas" & electricity is allowed. We can thank environmental laws for this.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7554855

Maybe that's "most cities" in Canada. I think there were a couple places in the USA that did inspections and made people take out or modify their fireplaces, but that's surely the exception rather than the rule here.

Gasoline is a blend of refined oils designed to break down in a short period of time. Therefore it is not suitable for longterm storage. If you have the resources, setting up a propane system is more practicable. Lacking that try to setup your survival using non powered technology like that used by your grandparents. Where you have access to cheap fuel like wood or coal, the steam engine is the best choice for heating and power. Learn to process your own food for storage, dehydrate, pressure canning, vacuum packing. If you can only afford one thing then dry pack corn for longterm storage. Learn how to cook and bake with it. Of course clean water is a given for surviving more than a few days. Plan on moving away from high risk areas. One of the things I have noticed with many of the Sandy survivors is that they are just sitting around waiting for someone else to put their lives back in order. A community that is self sufficient does not need the government.

Gasoline is a liquid, liquids neither compress nor expand (thermal expansion coefficient is VERY low) due to temperature changes.

A stabilizer is a product that when added to fuel will allow a longer term of storage prior to the fuel breaking down.

In the great US of A, you get arrested for trying to help out your neighbors.

The state doesn't want you to think or act on your own, therefore you are arrested for circumventing the states "disaster" recovery aparatus.

Imagine what 5 gallons of gas would have done to help all those people surive a little longer.

Disgusting:

[link to www.nbcconnecticut.com]

Police arrested a 47-year-old New York man accused of filling up 30 five-gallon Home Depot buckets with gasoline on Saturday night.

According to investigators, Yunus Latif, of Richmond Hill, collected money from his neighbors, bought gas at a Valero station almost 80 miles away in Orange and planned to bring it back to his neighborhood, where they had no power and gas.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8950

That owner of the Valero gas station, located at 347 Boston Post Road, was arrested as well.

Both men were issued a misdemeanor summons for violation of regulation concerning flammable or combustible liquids.

Another uninformed comment. It's great to hear the views of so many clueless people, but the fact is that in the affected area you can get gasoline, you can even get generators, but the very hardest thing to get is gas cans.

From the article:

The gas was returned to underground storage tanks, police said.

Wonder where the gas actually went...back to the original store, to a tank in the area....or somewhere else?

The gas was paid for, why not at least transport it safely to where it was to be intended for the friends and family who needed it?

I was replying to your statement about children etc. Since cities have stict laws about wooodburning stoves, this makes it impossible for most average families or poorer families. I just spoke to my own city about this & if we live in condo's we cannot install a woodburning stove at all. Only private independent standing homes can "apply" for a permit & has to be inspected, & the fire dept. also have to be part of it. Plus, one's home insurance goes up. Again, with so much of big brother involved, it becomes financially impossible for most.

The Stupid!!! IT Burns!!!

I would transport 200 gallons of gasoline in empty MILK JUGS if it meant the difference between my family freezing to death or having heat for a couple of days.

 Quoting: Sledster

What good are you and the gasoline if both burn up making the trip?

Worse yet, as you get into the city, the fumes ignite and begin to burn, you lose control and crash into homes and apartments, the gas explodes and a massive fire consumes a block, and hundreds die, more are burnt and out in the cold.

A little common sense, even when desperate is always the way to go.

But some people lose all common sense when they are in crisis mode... Which is why the NY, NJ areas are so dangerous now.

How long until you have huge fires from people attempting to keep warm?

Could be even worse with the approaching storm, high winds and power outages again, along with bitter cold...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23793796

Where are you at AC?

Florida? or California?

You must have good weather and I bet your goddamn gas stations are open.

These people have a crisis on their hands and all you want to do is whine about what "COULD" happen.

Grow the fuck up and get a pair of balls somewhere, because you may need to think outside of the goddamn box once in your life in order to SURVIVE. That's what these people are doing and I dont blame them one bit.

The cops were in the wrong for taking the man's fuel from him, illegal containers or not!

That kind of shit just pisses me off and you want to banter about laws being broken.

Get a fucking CLUE!

I agree it isn't safe to transport that much gasoline in that manner. However, unless someone plows into him there isn't much danger except to the man himself because of fumes. Gas cans do NOT have vents any more, and the National Guard in NJ was allowing people to fill up any type of container with gas. They "returned the gas to the underground storage facilities" in this man's case...did it get sold twice? Did he get his money back?

Another uninformed comment. It's great to hear the views of so many clueless people, but the fact is that in the affected area you can get gasoline, you can even get generators, but the very hardest thing to get is gas cans.

Not sure that West Haven, Conn was that adversly affected. Hey, the dude drove all that way, he can get the gas cans there!

Re: Man Arrested for "Hoarding" Gas in 5 Gallon Buckets
Which is more dangerous?

Freezing to death from generators not running or possibly using the wrong container for gas?

The Government is here to protect you, even if it kills you in the process.

Was it the BEST option to haul gas like that? Nope.

Was it a better option then letting your children and others face freezing nights without power. Hell yes.

Of course, since the idiots on this thread are not facing the issue, they have no right to judge what they would do, nor what others have the right to do to protect their own.

Children need to be raised in a home and to have a wood stove or pellet stove for back up heat. Its what is done in the winter in the midwest and northern and mountain states. You cant place your lives 100 percent on the utility line and the gas station.

pellet stoves require electricity to run the auger.
you need a wood stove.

Yeah, my mistake mentioning pellet, lol. Ive re clarified myself, Had a pellet stove for a mere 6 months in my residence after I installed it, Had to move again, wont get one again, went back to wood.

Re: Man Arrested for "Hoarding" Gas in 5 Gallon Buckets
That guy is stupid for using 5 gallon buckets to store gas. He shouldnt be arrested though. Gas taken from him until he can store it properly, but not arrested.

No where in the article does it say that he was going to "store it". He was bringing it back for his neighbors. If the authorities were on the "ball" & doing their job, then this man would not have had to resort to doing this. Also, why did not the cop give an escort to the man so he could deliver the gas safely. This sad story just highlights the insurmountable problems these people are facing, & the lacksadasical attitude of the authorities.

Dammed if you do & dammed if you don't. A neighbor who was being a hero gets fined. People who were trying to help themselves get to go without gas. What a world we now live in. Makes me sick.
