Again, you think us Americans are moronic and stupid? Of course it has to be up to code !!!!!!!! youll burn your place down if it isnt !!!!

And of course condos and apartments cant have a stove, duh ! But if one was to raise a family, of course youre expected to provide a real home for them.

and boo hoo hoo, too many hurdles to save your families life if the heat went out. Boo hoo, cant save up money no, for something that could save your life, Cant walk down or make phone calls to make sure everythings good to go, yeah, too much trouble to make a fire, only heating elements and furnace from utility company can provide us like a baby and a teat, boo hoo, cry me a river.

Sorry bout that also, seemed like you were building up a mountain of excuses not to have a woodburning stove, or maybe that was my perception only..

I have other things going on and Im grumpy today, Im sorry.

No worries, I know you are not normally grumpy.

Unfortunately I live in a condo, & I can't have a woodburning stove. Wish I could move to the country & have one. Its what I grew up with. But home sales have come to a halt & that keeps me stuck in cityville for now. I hope the energies clear up for you soon Apollo. Be well.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7554855

I did that once, lived in a condo. Then I found out what condo association politics and stupidity is. Found out that living in a condo, especially "owning" one, is a mistake.

For the same price or less I could have had a slightly rundown single family home. And now I would always choose the freestanding house option.

Could be black market racketing. Not personal use.
 Quoting: The Silent One

And you know what, that doesn't matter. It would have gotten fuel where it's needed.

If they're not regulated, markets that serve that purpose are called "black market". They are very important and a very good thing in most cases.

Search for the title before posting... I'm sure there will be several more of this post today and tomorrow.

The man and gas station owner were arrested for using 5 gallon paint buckets. Look at the picture of 30 buckets stacked in the van with the lids coming off.

It could be deadly to more than the van driver, k.
 Quoting: Giftedest

I could give two shits about other threads, most good stories get lost forever here, so having the same topic posted more than once is the only way shit gets pinned that is important.

And yeah, we know he broke the law, but it just shows you how fucking desperate these people are.

And this bullshit about the lids expanding, that is complete bullshit, its all fucking plastic.

My plastic gas cans don't expand do yours?
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8950

the problem is transport. 150 gallons of gas in plastic buckets could torch a whole intersection and everyone in it.
 Quoting: Kirk

A better solution would have been to use 3 or 4 industrial steel 55 gallon drums. Pumps are available cheaply from Harbor freight. They would easily go in a PU truck or van, though an SUV is more difficult. I have modified 5 gallon plastic "approved" containers to vent safely, as I won't stand for the stupid EPA trying to violate the laws of physics.

A desperate situation & this man jumped in to help them out, because he couldn't take the suffering any longer.

So a/c I have a question for you. Why were the design of the plastic gas can's changed (without a vent)? Is their a conspiracy here? Maybe so that peeps would not use them to store gas for a crisis??? Just my conspiracy mind working.

Hi friend, its just the grumpy capricorn rears its goat head now and then, lol. all capricorns have biting sarcasm and attitudes.

Yes, hang in there..lots of people moving up into new homes and lots of homes made in 50s and 70s I see for sale now anywhere from 60-90 thousand.. and maybe rental as well. Many rental homes wont mind a woodburning stove cause it could increase value and desirability..if its put in nice and to code.

Not much freedom in a housing community where theres many regulations etc..

That guy is stupid for using 5 gallon buckets to store gas. He shouldnt be arrested though. Gas taken from him until he can store it properly, but not arrested.
 Quoting: 284dan

No where in the article does it say that he was going to "store it". He was bringing it back for his neighbors. If the authorities were on the "ball" & doing their job, then this man would not have had to resort to doing this. Also, why did not the cop give an escort to the man so he could deliver the gas safely. This sad story just highlights the insurmountable problems these people are facing, & the lacksadasical attitude of the authorities.

Dammed if you do & dammed if you don't. A neighbor who was being a hero gets fined. People who were trying to help themselves get to go without gas. What a world we now live in. Makes me sick.

I have come to the point of not wanting to own any type of property. Gone is the joy of home ownership. Repairs, taxes, insurance, on & on. But the alternative of renting is also out of the question, way too expensive. Money down the drain. What to do next is my dilema. Your post has given me even more impetus to make some kind of move. Tks.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 25327582

hmmm. not sure who you were replying to. But there many unanswered questions here. Why was proper gas cans not available at a discounted price at the gas stations? Why was the local gas stations not being topped up to keep the locals supplied? Why have the authorities let things get so bad, that residents are forced to take risky chances like this man did? Let point the blame where it belongs, on the useless authorities.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 7554855

Well I am in the area and can answer these questions!

1. as of last week, gas cans were unavailable. Home Depot told me they were sold out all along the east coast. You could get a generator but not a gas can. That's because a lot of people DID prep who had not prepped before, then more went out for gas cans right after the storm, and exhausted the supply.

2. This is an unprecedented disaster and there's a limit to what one can reasonably prepare for.

3. See 2.

EPA operates like any powerful bureaucracy - they have tunnel vision, and "their" mission is the only thing that matters to them. Look at their ridiculous stance on coal.

By eliminating the vents, one source of VOC pollution was eliminated, and they could brag about it. The downstream effects were inconsequential to them.

Re: Man Arrested for "Hoarding" Gas in 5 Gallon Buckets
My neighbor installed one of the Generac propane generators that cost about $10,000 . In this storm, a part broke and she was again without power. Not sure if it's been fixed yet.

I am thinking of getting one of those conversion kits (about $200 I think) for my gas generator so it can also run on propane, i.e. I can be "dual-fuel" for less risk. Do I have to disable the gasoline capability in a permanent way to install a propane conversion?

150 gallons of gas in paint cans?

That isn't hording, that is just plain stupid, the kind of stupid that gets people killed.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23793796

And you exhibit the kind of stupid that proves most people have low IQ's and can't understand the written word.

They are not fucking paint cans, they are 5 gallon plastic buckets, made from the same plastic that all plastic gas cans are made from.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8950

Yeah, and there is no safe way to pour from them, also these have no vents, you can see in the picture some of the lids are bulged with pressure... These "buckets" aren't designed to hold, transport and dispense gasoline safely.

They're lucky!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23793796

Vents, are you people fucking morans, gas cans don't have vents, and in fact the US government has ruined the "gas can" forever by MANDATING THAT THEY BE MADE WITH NO VENTS.

NO VENTS

It abolished them de facto with new standards that every state had to adopt by 2009. So for the last three years, you have not been able to buy gas cans that work properly. They are not permitted to have a separate vent. The top has to close automatically. There are other silly things now, too, but the biggest problem is that they do not do well what cans are supposed to do.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8950

Correct--new 5 gal cans have no vents--they swell in heat, suck up/contract /cave in in cold--you can't pour from them worth a damn, without tipping them up and down. About all you can do is drill your own vent hole and close it with tape to prevent leaks.

So I take it you wouldn't mind at all if your neighbour had gallons of gas stored incorrectly next door!
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 23755636

Apparently he was not going to store it, it would have been immediately distributed to a number of people for use in generators.

Yes, they should have used proper containers --but last time I checked stores were charging more than $20 for a five gallon plastic gas can so maybe that's part of why they didn't have them to use--or at least secured the lids on the makeshiftt gas carriers.

It is appalling that storm victims are suffering from hypothermia and starvation in that area, when food, water and warmth are less than hour away. Typical FEMA incompetence or something worse?

When people are desperate they often take dangerous chances.
 Quoting: Ralph--a house dog

I am in this general area, in fact smack in the middle between Orange County and NYC.

As of last week, no gas cans were available for sale. Nowhere. According to Home Depot they were sold out on the entire east coast. You can get a generator but not a gas can.

I have some of those paint buckets but they are used, not sure if they're clean enough to use as extra gas cans. I only have enough actual gas cans for one day's worth of fuel, so I am refilling every day, and I'd rather have 2 days worth at home, seems we'll be out of power a while longer.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 27058084

You guys should request some gas cans. They are not sold out on the east coast. I shopped on Saturday for donations for LongBeach-West Haven, NJ area which was transported up on Sunday and my Kmart had a shit load of 1 and 3 gallon gas containers in Edgewater Maryland. Put it in as a request at the shelters and those of us helping down eastside will be more than happy to send them up.

Thanks bud! hf

Actually I'm fortunate not to need a shelter (knock on wood) and don't even know for sure where the nearest one is to me, maybe our town hall or police station lets people stay overnight. If I am ever at a shelter I'll let them know that they might be able to get gas cans if they need more. Or if they don't but want to flip them to me, well maybe I'll even ask that.

Much appreciated.

In the great US of A, you get arrested for trying to help out your neighbors.

The state doesn't want you to think or act on your own, therefore you are arrested for circumventing the states "disaster" recovery aparatus.

Imagine what 5 gallons of gas would have done to help all those people surive a little longer.

Disgusting:

[link to www.nbcconnecticut.com]

Police arrested a 47-year-old New York man accused of filling up 30 five-gallon Home Depot buckets with gasoline on Saturday night.

According to investigators, Yunus Latif, of Richmond Hill, collected money from his neighbors, bought gas at a Valero station almost 80 miles away in Orange and planned to bring it back to his neighborhood, where they had no power and gas.

What he did was dangerous, but his heart was certainly in the right place. I think arresting him was going way too far.

Re: Man Arrested for "Hoarding" Gas in 5 Gallon Buckets
I agree it isn't safe to transport that much gasoline in that manner. However, unless someone plows into him there isn't much danger except to the man himself because of fumes. Gas cans do NOT have vents any more, and the National Guard in NJ was allowing people to fill up any type of container with gas. They "returned the gas to the underground storage facilities" in this man's case...did it get sold twice? Did he get his money back?
 Quoting: snark

Thank you man, that is what I'm trying to tell these assclown morans.

GAS CANS DON'T FUCKING VENT

So stop using that as the basis for your argument.

They DO NOT VENT FUCKTARDS!!!!!!!

OH and did I mention that

THEY DON"T FUCKING VENT!!!!!!

Stupid morans.
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 8950

You're right, gas can don't vent. But obviously those buckets were venting fumes. So shut the fuck up and pick a better battle to fight. Who in their right mind would support a tard that would fill 50 home depot buckets like that? I guess you.

If HALF the idiots that called the man "stupid' had ANY experience with trying to get LEGAL, RED gas containers just before Sandy hit, you would KNOW, realize the man got the next best thing. OR, IF you ever tried to PRY the lid off of one of the buckets, CHILDREN, you would KNOW it is almost impossible !

SURE, the pic shows lid loose, it would be better to ASSUME it was because the 'boys in blue' or others, had emptied them, as how would the picture have been taken BEFORE the arrests were made ?

Re: Man Arrested for "Hoarding" Gas in 5 Gallon Buckets
Wrong.

You are twisting the story to piss people off.

He was "in violation of regulation concerning flammable or combustible liquids."

Because he put GAS inside HOME DEPOT CONTAINERS which were EXPANDING.

Not hoarding.

If they actually spent the money for proper gas containers it would have been no problem.

Don't tell me there are no gas containers, I am right outside of Boston and travel to NJ daily. I can find plenty.
 Quoting: Nosaj

$20x30= $600, Plus the price of gas 150x4=600, so $1200 bucks for a run for 150 gallons of gas. You Bosston folks must have money falling out your kazoos.

Home depot sells 5 gal containers for about $2.75 ea.

Pretty much this. Dude was dumb to try and transport that much gas that way - extremely dangerous. But arresting him was equally dumb.
