Putting aside the fact that the OP is gay and has skin in the game, the reality is that BOTH major parties wish to deprive us of freedom in different ways. Neither has any desire or intention to maximize freedom in any way, so they divide up reality and regulate their half of it. Societal "guilt" over not interfering is not justification to interfere. I completely agree with what you are saying. It is getting ridiculous, but people need to care enough to force change. This two party BS isn't working anymore. They spend so much money that I'm sure we are missing out on people who would be a much more effective president simply because they can't afford to run. But, for me, it is also an issue of values and foresight. I personally would not, and have not, had an abortion, however, I don't believe it is anyone's right to tell me what is morally acceptable for my own body. I just think it is utter hypocrisy because on one hand, the Republicans want to ban abortions, and on the other they want to cut social services for the poor. How can you force some teenager to have a baby and then say sorry, sucks to be you and you will now be living a life of poverty and so will your child. If they want to mandate every conceived child be born, then they should also be forced to provide that child with a decent life. But guess what? We can't afford that nor should we, so what's the alternative? I should say I agree with you partially, I am certainly not gay, nor do I have "skin" in this game. I'm happily married with three kids I wouldn't trade for the world. My issue is with my constitutional rights and yours. They are being eroded on a daily basis and using religion seems to be a pretty good tool. |

I don't understand how allowing a loving couple to be just that in the eyes of the government will unravel our society? They are together whether or not they are married, the issue is that they don't have survivor rights, they may not be able to visit their loved one in the hospital, etc. My argument about abortion is not even close to being correlated with slavery. It is a fact that you do not have to have an abortion if you do not want one, just like back in the days of slavery you didn't have to own a slave, it's a CHOICE, that is the point. You have no right to take away my CHOICE. I, personally, have not made that choice, but I guarantee you if one of my daughters became pregnant she would not be having a child as a teenage mother. They aren't equipped to be parents on many levels, financially, mentally, and emotionally. They end up breeding kids who perpetuate the cycle of poverty, and that's a fact. I tend to agree on some level, it is a moral issue, but it is also a financial issue. We live in a world that requires money to eat and house yourself. If you can't afford a child what do you do? Get on welfare? Live in poverty? Aren't those also moral imperatives? You would rather a person live in poverty, a child no less, than allow abortions? I think they are sad and a horrible choice, there should be alternatives like sex education in high schools and free birth control so people don't have to resort to killing their unborn child, but we don't have that either, so what are the options??? |
