The Bible says the earth is a sphere
There is an idiotic thread up where people post nonsense that the Bible does not say, to bolster their contention that the Bible is nonsense.
Chief among them is the oft repeated bs that the Bible says the earth is flat.It does not.
The Bible clearly states that the earth is a sphere.

Re: The Bible says the earth is a sphere
hat doesn't say it's a sphere. It's just picturing the earth as you see it from a high hill or a mountain, like a huge circular disk with you in the middle. And the sky seems like a dome over you.

If it really talked about the earth being a sphere it would use words like "ball" or "sphere" which, as far as I know, it doesn't.

Just accept that the bible, or the old testamnet, was written when people didn't know about the shape of the earth. Nobody expects them to have known it was a sphere.

Maybe not recently, although I'm not sure whather they implicitly supported the idea at one time. certainly before and during the early medieval period they weren't actively putting forward the idea that it was a sphere.

Anyway, as far as I know there's nothing in the bible, especially the old testament, that says the earth is a sphere.

all of youse are aholes! the bible doesnt describe the global earth! you numbskulls! the word used is "ERETS" which is erroneously and inacurrately translated as "earth". the correct translation should be "LAND". The hebrews did not have enuf science of navigation to plot the entire globe.

Freggin morons! the bible doesnt speak to whether the earth is flat or spherical.

Really,Dr.P? Is that why the church ferociously criticized Gallileo and burned Giordano Bruno? They labeled Gallileo a "heretic" when he presented his hypothesis of a sun centered galaxy and a spherical earth.

Re: The Bible says the earth is a sphere
864,
You prove yourself to be the greater numbskull -- to borrow your phrase. The first and primary definition of "erets" is "earth, whole earth." Secondary meanings are "land" or "ground." See Strong's ... or are you more authoritative?

As the Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown Critical and Explanatory Commentary notes regarding the verse:

"circle--applicable to the globular form of the earth, above which, and the vault of sky around it, He sits. For 'upon' translate 'above.'"

Obviously the language is poetic and not to be taken as a scientific pronouncement, but to state that "circle" can have no reference to the curvature of the horizon and a round earth is merely your unsupported opinion.

The Bible does, somewhere in there, say that the Earth is a sphere and hangs by an invisible thread...afraid I can`t tell you whereabouts it is in there but i recall a Jehova`s Witness showing it to me several times...I`d say I`d find out from him where it is but to my shame, each time he or they call these days,I`m "out" and don`t answer the door... anon

Re: The Bible says the earth is a sphere
More on the sphere earth in bible writings.

The Hebrew record is the oldest, because Job is one of the oldest books in the Bible. Historians generally [wrongly] credit the Greeks with being the first to suggest a spherical earth. In the sixth century B.C., Pythagoras suggested a spherical earth. [JSM]

Eratosthenes of Alexandria (circa 276 to 194 or 192 B.C.) calcuated the circumference of the earth "within 50 miles of the present estimate." [Encyclopedia Brittanica]

The Greeks also drew meridians and parallels. They identified such areas as the poles, equator, and tropics. This spherical earth concept did not prevail; the Romans drew the earth as a flat disk with oceans around it. [JSM]

The round shape of our planet was a conclusion easily drawn by watching ships disappear over the horizon and also by observing eclipse shadows, and we can assume that such information was well known to New Testament writers. Earth's spherical shape was, of course, also understood by Christopher Columbus. [DD]

The implication of a round earth is seen in the book of Luke, where Jesus described his return, Luke 17:31. Jesus said, "In that day," then in verse 34, "In that night." This is an allusion to light on one side of the globe and darkness on the other simultaneously. [JSM]

"When the Bible touches on scientific subjects, it is entirely accurate." [DD]

Re: The Bible says the earth is a sphere
OF COURSE the Bible states the earth is a "circle". It was known back in the age of Sumeria... which, of course, raises the question of how in the world could THEY have known?

The answer is... because our Gods (plural) TOLD us... showed us.

Then, eons later, along come the "Christians" and put together a religion in which they copy the stories that originated with the Sumerians and act as if they WEREN'T copied... and worse still, they make the plural "Gods" into a singular "God" who does not live among us and in fact is never seen by anyone.

Christianity is bullshit, basically... and what isn't bullshit was copied from an earlier age. "Eden", for instance, was copied from the Sumerian "E.DIN" which was a location that the Gods (the Annunaki) resided. "Adam" in the bible is a direct ripoff of the Annunaki "ADAMA", which was the name given to the first homo sapiens that the Annunaki genetically modified, creating humans.

Re: The Bible says the earth is a sphere
Sure... just go Google "Zecharia Sitchin".

And no, formal scholars do not seem to agree with his interpretation of the Sumerian translations. But I think he paints a pretty decent set of arguments in his many books on this subject. I disagree with some of Sitchin's contentions (the whole Nibiru thing with the 3600-year retrograde orbit), but in general, I think ZS shows just how much of Sumerian writings the Christians directly ripped off.

Re: The Bible says the earth is a sphere
Obviously, "four corners" is a poetic phrase. Just as is "circle of the earth." But the obvious implication is nevertheless a circular nature.

The ancients had far more knowledge than we give them credit for. Do you think the builders of the Great Pyramid didn't know the earth was a sphere? They certainly did. And that was long before the time of Isaiah. The complex astronomy and mathematics built into the Great Pyramid still baffles supposedly erudite modern mathematicians.

And 864, you're wrong. I said look up Strong's. The first definition is the "full earth." At the very least, either defintion is acceptable -- and that demolishes you first eroneous post on this thread.

Sounds like a sphere to me.

Isaiah 24

[1] Behold, the LORD maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof.

[19] The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly.

[20] The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again.
