However, the SOSUS arrays themselves were based upon technology that could only be upgraded irregularly. With the ending of the Cold War in the 1990s, the immediate need for SOSUS decreased, and the focus of the US Navy also turned toward a system that was deployable on a theatre basis. In effect, the end of the Cold War eliminated much of the justification for maintaining IUSS at its full capability, with the existence and capabilities of SOSU and IUSS being declassified in 1991.[2] Although officially declassified in 1991, by that time IUSS and SOSUS had long been an open secret.[3] The SOSUS components are now primarily used for scientific projects such as tracking the vocalisations of whales and other ocean mammals in various study projects and as a data network for undersea instrumentation packages, and for acoustic thermometry. Commander, Undersea Surveillance (CUS), head of the IUSS, was elevated to a Navy Echelon IV command on 28 February 2007[4] at NAS Oceana / Dam Neck Annex, Virginia, operates under the operational guidance of COMPACFLT. Naval Ocean Processing Facilities adjacent to NAS Whidbey Island in Oak Harbor, Washington, and NAS Oceana in Virginia Beach, Virginia, still monitor SOSUS and FDS, and they provide SURTASS connectivity around the world. A third facility, operated in conjunction with the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence is located at RAF St. Mawgan and is known as Joint Maritime Facility (JMF) St. Mawgan.[5] |

I'm not even sure most Americans remember how to be scared! It takes a lot to do that, more than a sub lurking about. Be that as it may, perhaps Putin feels sorry for the abandoned victims of Hurricane Sandy and is considering trying to come to their aid since Obama sure hasn't. America has no reason to fear. America's military is WAY WAY bigger and more capable than both Russia and China combined. Short of nuclear ballistic missiles from China or Russia, America has no reason at all to fear anyone. lol, not according to GLP mods, who now think they've uncovered some secret info on Russian subs off the East Coast and are making sure to spread their fabricated fear another day, another dollar... |

Quoting: Sleeping Giant The submarine was identified by its NATO designation as a Russian Seirra-2 class submarine believed to be based with Russia’s Northern Fleet. It was the first time that class of Russian submarine had been detected near a U.S. coast, said officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of anti-submarine warfare efforts. It would be sad if the enemy relies on that information for intelligence gathering and planning. Suffice to say, there isn't any movement in the ocean that can't be detected now, anywhere, in real time... All data available, even when an enemy sailor farts they can know it. :P |

Anonymous Coward User ID: 22151483 United States 11/05/2012 08:32 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | We're not just going to start a war over an attack boat doing normal training recon and tactic training. We do the same exact thing. If it was an SSBN boat, then I'd be a little more hesitant to give the slightest fuck about this. We're probably tracking all of them anyways, our attack class subs are LEAGUES above the Russian ability to track. |

This time it’s a Russian sub off the coast. You sheep really are ready for the shear. [link to www.youtube.com] |
Yt'er connectingdots2 User ID: 23724501 Canada 11/05/2012 08:39 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | I served in the Navy in ASW since the 80's. There's nothing new, or unusual about this. We 'shadowed' Russian subs, up and down the East Coast (as close as 50 miles) all the time. umm..isn't the line for international waters exactly 200 miles offshore? ...in fact I'm almost 100% sure it is. ...so doubt very much the US Navy was tracking Russian subs within 50 miles. That would have had them panicking for sure! |
