Apparently the tap water is okay to drink

Staten Island drinking water is safe, DEP officials says
USER COMMENT:
"I just gave my tap water a test and got a reading of 50ppm total disolved solids. That translates into very good tap water. It doesn't give us a bacteria count but since I could smell the clorine/cloramine there is probably no worry about bacteria."
