Humans have not evolved from apes. Humans and apes evolved from a common ancestor. We are not the sons of apes but some of us are monkey's uncles!

the mutation rate is 1% every 3 million years. Chimps are 98% the same as humans.. that's 6 million years of evolution.

It's a colloquialism. They are known as the "great apes", and nobody wants to keep writing out "common ancestor with apes".
