Greece to shut down as unions hold 48-hour general strike
Greece’s unions are holding their third general strike in six weeks in the hope of persuading politicians not to back a major new austerity program that will commit the country to further hardship.

Flights will stop between 10:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. (0800-1100GMT) Tuesday, at the start of a 48-hour strike that will close schools, halt train and ferry services, and keep hospitals running on emergency staff only.

Two days of demonstrations are planned to start at 11:00 a.m. (0900GMT) Tuesday, continuing until lawmakers vote late Wednesday on the bill to slash €13.5 billion ($17.3 billion) from budget spending over two years.

Police cordoned off streets around main government buildings late on Monday night in preparation for potentially violent protests.

Conservative Prime Minister Antonis Samaras is facing strong opposition from his Socialist and left-wing lawmakers in his coalition, in the first serious crisis for his five-month-old government.

I spoke to someone who is from Greece and has lots of family there. According to her you would never know there is an issue. She said things are as they have been. Her family lives outside of Athens and on the islands. Only the cities with the universities happen to have all this rioting & such. After hearing that it does make one wonder what really is the truth & what is made up garbage.

Interesting article about my neck of the woods that marries into current sentiments.

Last night they paraded a 20+ foot tall effigy of Angela Merkel bursting out of a Greek Acropolis and giving a Nazi salute..

and then blew it up :)

For what it is worth, we vote Liberal (MP Liberal Norman Baker)

T'was not the only one of her to be burnt referencing the Euro crisis...

Each year our bonfire societies pick effigies of those that are enemies of the people and burn them, they also pick effigies of those who should be honoured in tribute, this year it amongst other was Neil Armstrong..

I'm afraid things like this will be more and more common especially in Europe. There are tons of immigrants who refuse to conform to the culture of the countries they moved to. The only reason they moved there was to get benefits from the government. Greeks wants to try and fix their country but the leeches just want to suck the country dry and then move on to a new victim (country).

This is what happens when multiculturalism is forced on us. Nationalism because the natural reaction as people try to keep their culture. We saw this in the 30's and 40's with communism. They wanted to create a new communist culture worldwide and as history shows the people fought this and Nationalist regimes sprung up.
Ayatollah Khomeini:
“Islam makes it incumbent on all adult males, provided they are not disabled and incapacitated, to prepare themselves for the conquest of [other] countries so that the writ of Islam is obeyed in every country in the world. But those who study Islamic Holy War will understand why Islam wants to conquer the whole world…. Those who know nothing of Islam pretend that Islam counsels against war. Those [who say this] are witless. Islam says: Kill all the unbelievers just as they would kill you all! Does this mean that Muslims should sit back until they are devoured by [the unbelievers]? Islam says: Kill them [the non-Muslims], put them to the sword and scatter [their armies]. Does this mean sitting back until [non-Muslims] overcome us? Islam says: Kill in the service of Allah those who may want to kill you! Does this mean that we should surrender to the enemy? Islam says: Whatever good there is exists thanks to the sword and in the shadow of the sword! People cannot be made obedient except with the sword! The sword is the key to Paradise, which can be opened only for Holy Warriors! There are hundreds of other [Koranic] verses and Hadiths [sayings of the Prophet] urging Muslims to value war and to fight. Does all that mean that Islam is a religion that prevents men from waging war? I spit upon those foolish souls who make such a claim.”

Isn't Greece already shut down? The unions are just acting for their masters in a publicity stunt to try to save the system.

That's true, the things are hard in the 2-3 big cities, the low class and the immigrants are facing serious problems so far but as the time passes it's starting to affect everyone and move to middle class. I mean most of the pensioners are having a 300-400 euro per month pension and we are the most expensive country in the EU on many services and products.

What most people don't know, is that the Greek household/private debt per gdp is the lower in the eurozone, lots of Greeks own their houses and stuff, if for example Greek household debt was like the UK or Sweden ones the complete collapse of social web would have happened in the first year with this austerity policy, this is a public debt problem and a state that is milking it's citizens.

That's not to say that they aren't people facing severe problems as i said, off course they are, but we are not in complete humanitarian crisis as it is sometimes pictured in the MSM, unemployment is the big problem, if people had jobs the situation would have been far better, but there has been created a system with the euro that it's destroying completely the existing infrastructure and is very difficult for young people to start new business or to sustain your business if you have one and you are not a big corporation, taxation is enormous and unsustainable. I don't think that this can keep going on, wages/pensions have been cut 30+%, quality of life has fallen 70% since we got in the euro and they want to push for more austerity, so eventually the collapse will happen, TPTB want this to happen.

The sectors who are striking are shut down. Private sector and some public organizations are working as normal.

So the strike is being well observed then. It'll be interesting to compare if the British unions call for a general strike sometime next year as they've said they might.

There is a chance that Britain will save us from the EU coz so far they don't accept the EU budget for 2014-20 that Germany/France are proposing which is to raise the budget while UK wants it to remain the same as it was. If budget remains the same EU is obviously doomed with current financial data. Budget must be voted on November the 22th.

That's great and only fair and right imo, austerity is starting in UK and for sure UK is not benefited as much as other countries in the EU by the current system! I'm surprised this is not bigger news in the rest of the world or glp tbh, this could actually be one of the nails in the coffin.
