This ... ^ ... Coming from some Kraut?

Exactly how many wars does your country have to display epic failure at before you are silenced?

What's the German Army going to do? Those Kielbasa and Sauerkraut at us? Seriously.

Minimum, folks! Remember, sometimes you get fatbodies joining the Corps. You want them to make it so they can become lean and mean as they progress.

There was one Devil Dog in my platoon that could do 40+ pull ups overhand. One bad dude!

Well, it's like this. Ever been in a bar, and there is always some guy there, telling everyone how tough he is?

How he is the baddest guy in town?

Eventually he runs into some quiet guy, minding his own business, and pulls that shit on him.

We all know how it ends.

The guy calling me a "raging dildo", will not actually address what I posted.

He just calls names, and goes on a rant about Germany, which has nothing at all to do with the thread.

This would be a guy I would not want to have in my squad/platoon. He has trouble written all over him. And immaturity.

I've trained with USMC Recon, SEAL's, Rangers, Navy EOD, and a few other units. There's good and bad in every unit. One thing about getting a glimpse into special ops units, is that you quickly realize that there is no such thing as supermen. However, the level of intelligence in those units is much higher than in standard units such as regular infantry. I was just a punk kid who happened to be able to shoot well by USMC standards, run fast, and swim like a fish. It was an honor to serve with some of the best. It makes you realize though, that no matter how tough you think you are, there is always someone who is tougher.
"What you have just said, is the most insanely idiotic thing I have ever heard. At no point, in your rambling incoherent response were you even close to anything that could be considered a rational thought. Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points and may God have mercy on your soul."

That's true, There are also a lot of regulular infantry guys who are highly intelligent and well trained. They just never pursued entry into those other units you mentioned.

I'd rather have a grunt of average intelligence, who has maturity, a good attitude, and is willing to learn, and knows when to keep quiet, than having a highly intelligent soldier who just likes to run his mouth about how "cool" he is.

They can be cool playing Grand Theft Auto, or telling war stories to Billie Beth trailer park queen. But in the field I don't want guys who think they are "cool" because they are in some unit but really don't know what they are doing.

Your ancestors too. You boys wouldn't last one evening out on the field with the Marines from WWII. In fact, the modern american military has proven that it tucks tail and runs when it comes upon any force that will actually fight back. Face it, you're giant pussies who confuse your technological prowess with your micro penises.

Not to mention a water survival test that was an ass kicker.

Unfortunately, I had to do some field exercise as an NCO, and was assigned a group of marines, allegedly infantry.

When it came to the land navigation exercises, and I was telling them to show me re-section and intersection to find their position on the map, they just gave me that deer in the headlight look. (They had no idea what I meant)

Then I was supervising a mortar crew, (81mm and 4.2 inch) and they had no idea what to do when it came to cutting charges.

I was not impressed with them. They did a lot of oooh rahhing and all that like monkeys, but their infantry skills were sorely lacking.

Just how it was.I needed a stiff drink after dealing with them all day. It was like Special education.

I explained the situation. It was not encouraging. They may be "cool", but as infantrymen, they leave a lot to be desired.

When I am in the bush, I'm not looking for "cool" guys. I want well trained, level headed guys who know when to shut up.

I can't speak for infantry, I was a Artillery Radar Operator and everyone on in my section was very well trained and knew exactly what needed to be done. These guys that were allegedly infantry didn't happen to be reservists did they?

It's been ten years since I got out but, when I was in, all the active duty guys were good to go and well trained. They knew their duties inside and out. The reservists on the other hand acted exactly as you stated above...
 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 12118332

My best recollection is that they were active duty.

It may just have been a bad group I was with.

But If I had my choice, I'd rather have an army ranger, SEAL, or regular army infantry with me.

Too many bad experiences. All the marines I met just never shut up about how great they were, and that is always a bad sign.

It's like when guys try to tell you how tough they are and can kick ass. A real bad ass guy never opens his mouth.

When I was in Airborne school (circa 1983) we had 2 or 3 marines there, in my class.

From the minute they arrived at Ft Benning, they started running their mouths, bad-mouthing the army as a whole, and just having a generally shitty attitude about how great they were, and much the army sucked.

We really just let it go, as we were students there, too, and we knew if you got into any sort of fight or trouble, your ass would be booted out of there in the blink of an eye.

But these marine guys kept running their mouths, and the Black Hats (airborne instructors) over heard them, on more than one occasion.

They were quickly thrown out after that, and thru the grapevine I heard that the airborne school CO (or XO, somebody high up the food chain), made a call to the marines CO about the problems and bad attitude that the marines had who the Marine CO sent to Benning, taking up valuable student slots in the school.

I would not have wanted to be those marines when they returned to their Camp. God only knows what their CO had in store for them.

I mean, what soldier or sailor or airman would go to a school, at another post, of another branch of the military, and then shit in their living room??

Common sense should prevail.

Problem is, that could all go away while in combat, and one has to know how to do land nav, at night, with a compass and so on.

When I was in, a perfect PFT score was 20 pull ups, 80 sit ups in two minutes, and a 3 mile run in under 18 minutes. I had a perfect PFT score all four years I was in. My best score was in an Ironman competition in boot camp. 43 pull ups, 126 sit ups, and I ran the 3 mile in 17:36.

I was in an anti-terrorism unit though. Some of those fleet Marines were unsat.

DSU is now attached to SPMAGTF and smaller crisis units...it's not called DSU anymore...but we were a small unit and smart as f*ck (had to beat 110 in GT) I got 118. One of my Cpls was selected Marine of the Year (Cpl Dignan)and our unit answered only to the Joint Chiefs and POTUS.

There were only 13 of us in the Marine Corps at time and right next to the brig for a reason.

After being a Marine for over 30 years and served in all types of units, to include being a CO twice and numerous out of country "real world" missions I can tell you that there is always a 10 per cent in every unit. This includes the other services. We all come from the same society and basic education. It depends on the individual to do well and excell. The Marines as a whole are integrated to function as a single entity whether they are infantry, logistics or air wing and sometimes go on missions that include the other services. It is the esprit de corps that drives us to do well knowing the others around us will cover our backs.

In your case having a bad day does not include the entire organization and you probably didn't inspire them. No offence intended but you have talk LOUD to Marines and with confidence. If you don't they will be inclined to think you don't know what your doing.

BTW I was a 300 PFT'r until I got older and noticed the other younger Marines starting to pass me up on the 3 milers. 3 pull ups is a starting point and every Marine is required to work out maintain or improve physical fitness, hence the periodic testing to maintain standards. In the case of enlisted they need the points to get promoted and in the case of an officer you better be 1st class.

I agree with the 10% thing, same in every branch.

But I wasn't having "a bad day",; they simply never heard of the material that I was putting forth to them.

Now, in that situation, talking loud isn't going to help. In fact, it likely is unproductive.

I never had/have a problem teaching a young soldier/marine, if he doesn't know something, I will take the time to pull out a map and compass and pencil and show him, and try and get him up to speed.

Not everything can be explained by yelling at people; some of this stuff is a bit complicated and not everyone is an MIT grad.

I had taken for granted that infantrymen who had reached a permanent duty station already had a grasp on the material, that they had been taught it at basic and followed up with their squad leader or platoon sergeant.

But as you can see, from the responses here, such as "you are gay", "you are a raging dildo", etc, that some people simply are not open to any correction.

These are dangerous people to have in the bush, who are supposed to be watching your back, or walking point on patrol.

What scares the hell out of me is one of these guys trying to call in a fire mission. I would really be worried that they'd call it right down on my head. My .02 cents.

Re: USMC requires males to be able to do 3 pull ups...... 3??

I remember getting grid coordinates getting hammered into my thick skull via push ups when I was a trainee. So I did that too while I was on the trail.

I would like to get a young soldier or Marine on here to recount something simple like the difference between magnetic, true, or grid north. Maybe how to use a watch to figure out where north is. You know something easy
