If the marines spent as much time actually training as they do telling everyone how cool they are, they might one day become an effective fighting force.

Unfortunately, I had to do some field exercise as an NCO, and was assigned a group of marines, allegedly infantry. When it came to the land navigation exercises, and I was telling them to show me re-section and intersection to find their position on the map, they just gave me that deer in the headlight look. (They had no idea what I meant) Then I was supervising a mortar crew, (81mm and 4.2 inch) and they had no idea what to do when it came to cutting charges. I was not impressed with them. They did a lot of oooh rahhing and all that like monkeys, but their infantry skills were sorely lacking. Just how it was.I needed a stiff drink after dealing with them all day. It was like Special education.
